Brink Updates Live, Free DLC Coming

Update: PSN multiplayer services have resumed in much of the world, which means you're now able to play Brink online! We've also thrown the matchmaking changes outlined in the original post below, so the next time you sign into PSN, you should see the updated match settings in Brink.

Original post: We have been working on updates for Brink to address the lag issue that some people have reported they were experiencing.

We have made a configuration change for 360 users (which will be available to the PS3, once PSN is up) that alters the number of human players when matchmaking for "Campaign" and most 'Freeplay' modes to eight total human players. This new configuration will allow those connecting to and hosting matches (particularly those with lower upstream bandwidth) to more reliably find and connect to quality hosts via the match-making process – resulting in less lag and more fun. This change is being rolled out today and will be available worldwide.

For players who haven't been experiencing lag, we'll still support 8 vs 8 on all maps via a new 'Big Teams' configuration in Freeplay, and through custom settings in Private matches. There is no download required for this update and it will be available automatically the next time you log in to play Brink and launch either campaign or standard Freeplay matches. This should allow players new to the Ark as well as veterans to find quality matches suitable to their preferred play style.

We are also releasing an incremental update for PC players via Steam that addresses AI, GPU, and server issues. See the full release notes for more information. Many of these fixes are being included in the full update for the 360 and PS3 versions.

We would like to thank you for supporting Brink and for your continued feedback. To show our appreciation for your support of Brink, we will be making the first DLC for Brink available for free when it is released. This DLC is planned for June and will offer additional maps and new content for players. We'll continue to provide announcements about the next title update, as well as the first DLC release as that information becomes available.

Hell yea, free DLC is always great. :) Hopefully all the issues will be fixed before you guys delve into the whole DLC system too deep.

Nice! I absolutely love you guys for releasing the first DLC for free - that's AWESOME! I appreciate the great work you guys are putting into this game, but please consider the many requests we've been making for a lobby/party system instead of the drop in/out feature. We really, really, really want that! If anything, just let us know what you're thoughts on it are and whether you're trying to work it out. Either way, thank you a ton!

Thanks guys, that's great.
Posted on 13 May, 2011 - 23:50
Splash Damage sure does know how to please a crowd. now all they need to do is make a small little lobby system to please the (play with my buddies) kind of people. Your doing great things splash damage, keep it up and we might have the best FPS of ALL time

Beautiful. :3

Wait, so the current solution for the lag was to drop the matchmaking system from 16 players, to 8 players? Am I misunderstanding this? And to play full 8v8 matches you have to start a customized one?

You can still join full 16 player matches using the Big Team list.

Good Work SD. I appreciate your hard work. The game, thus far, has been a blast. Looking forward to the DLC and more of the story.

This is so sudden... An update to fix stuff and FREE Dlc. Dream come true
Posted on 14 May, 2011 - 00:01
Thanks for the great patch (fixed my gridding issues) but now I'm getting bad lag now on every server :(
Posted on 14 May, 2011 - 00:01
And what about the very poor performances on ATI card ?
Posted on 14 May, 2011 - 00:01
3 Days, at least US side, and we already have a patch working on fixes, information on upcoming free content, and promises of things to come. I am pleased.

Shhhhwwwweeeeeettt!

i have 1 question for you BADMAN. can you tell me if you guys are even concerned with the lobby system that the community is BEGGING for? and can we expect the FREINDLY ai to be smarter in the future? im not bashing you, im just asking because its what the community wants and im just trying to get some answers scince your here.
Posted on 14 May, 2011 - 00:06
I've just played two or three game and I was still laging bad. It lag soo much! It's impossible to play for me. And i also have bug textures where the texture doesn't load. Well, that's all for the moment. I'm gonna play Brink when thoses bugs will be fixed.
Posted on 14 May, 2011 - 00:16
Lol! The Lag fix for the 360 is not a fix! Those with lower upstream bandwidth? I don't have a lower upstream bandwith (2MBit)... every other game runs fine and Brink still lags like crazy! And limiting the player count is hardly a fix! Wtf is going on here?!

We consider all of the feedback we're getting from the community. The PC version received a first round of AI tweaks today, which we'll be bringing to the consoles in the title update.

Thank you very much.

Great news, and keep up the good work, but you broke my save. I'm a little mad.
Posted on 14 May, 2011 - 00:38
Whatever doubt I may have had about this game, has now vanished, if you remain this swift at fixing the problems and answering the crowds then I can see this game doing damn fine...but as other's have said, a lobby to party up with friends would be much appreciated...oh, and a hell of a damn thanks is deserved for the Free DLC, damn nice of you...
Posted on 14 May, 2011 - 00:39
So when i log on to xbox live and onto brink i'll be prompted for an update? :) gonna try now
Posted on 14 May, 2011 - 00:40
Shiet, you guys at Splash Damage are quick at fixing/patching/changing your stuff :p And I must say.. Thanks alot and holy **** for the DLC announcement - free? On the XBOX? And what can this be? :p What-ifs and Customization?
Posted on 14 May, 2011 - 00:41
Glad to see free maps. There aren't a lot right now and it'll also encourage players to keep playing.
Posted on 14 May, 2011 - 00:43
Awesome news on the fixes (especially the AI) on the 360, same with the free DLC!
Posted on 14 May, 2011 - 00:45
Did anyone actually read the text? They removed 50% of the players (for people with lower internet connections). That's not "fixing the game"!
Posted on 14 May, 2011 - 00:55
Just one more thing.. It might just be me not understanding it, but are they removing 8v8 from Versus Campaign and inserting it into Big Team Freeplay only?
Posted on 14 May, 2011 - 00:55
LMAO. That's not a fix! That's a nerf. My friends and I bought this game to play the full 8v8 experience. That's how this game was designed to be played from the ground up. I feel like I've been robbed. Oh, we can still join 16 player matches can we? But they won't function sans lag. If 4v4 lags will the next fix be 2v2? Then 1v1 if that's no good. Here's an idea, if you can't figure out how to code a game without dedicated servers, DONT ATTEMPT IT AND DONT SELL ME ON 8v8! Thieves. The tragedy is I think this could be the best FPS MP released on consoles to date. So frustrated that they can't deliver the real experience.

Really. I don't think the comprehension is functioning for the people praising this "fix". Good god. We just got nerfed and people are singing praises. Unreal.
Posted on 14 May, 2011 - 00:56
Very nice! Thanks :)

At first when I skim-read the text it sounded nice, then I went deeper and I got more questions Are they making campaign 4v4 humans with the other 8 spots filled by bots only? They're removing the full player matches?
Posted on 14 May, 2011 - 00:58
^ See? They just see "FIX" and say thanks! Lol!
Posted on 14 May, 2011 - 00:58
i never doubted you guys, hopefully this will put a plug on a lot of the whiners so we can actually have some good useful discussions on 1337 BRINK
Posted on 14 May, 2011 - 00:58
I think they're seperating it sort of like Bad Company 2 has special "Squad" modes where they take the 16v16 down to 8v8. They are adding a 4v4 mode along with the 8v8, you just now have the optionto use both but you need to decide which mode you're going for aka "Big Team 8v8" or this new 4v4 thing. Granted I don't have a 360 but since no one else has said anything I'm just speculating.

not even subtle!
Posted on 14 May, 2011 - 01:02
Is it just me or did they speed up the running and widen the FOV in the patch? Game much more fluid and fun like this. Makes the Parkour less clunky.

They just nerfed the game on you pal. Wake up! THe maps are huge for a reason. To support 8v8. Not 4v4. What a bunch of mindless sycophants. The game they made is now half it was meant to be. All the years of testing and balancing was done for EIGHT VS EIGHT! You now have an ugly stepchild that won't deliver the intended experience.
Posted on 14 May, 2011 - 01:02
I'm assuming out of good faith...and I do mean assuming, like, literally just a stab in the dark...that Splash has done this so people can still play the game right now in it's current state, while they work on the actual solution to the actual problem in the Netcode...or whatever the hell the problem is...

But that still doesn't fix the 8v8 lag! Actually it fixes nothing. It just gives you the option to lower the player count.

game feels heaps better with more frames on my ATI and proper FOV

Hope is all we have. Nerfing the game better be a band-aid. I want to play Brink with 7 friends vs. 8 other humans FOREVER. Its such an amazing core game. They better fix it.

god i love you guys. by far the BEST game devolopers so far. a BRAND NEW ip and you excecuted the release of BRINK with the percision of a ninja. thanks for the personal reply. good luck taking down the lame FPS gamer society we have at the moment (COD) but if theres one thing they did right it was lobbies.
Posted on 14 May, 2011 - 01:07
This DLC is planned for June and will offer additional maps and new content for players.
So I got this incredibly (if a bit buggy) fun game, that's quickly getting patched. And now we're getting free DLC that's going to contain maps, thats plural, and new content?! Sweet!
Posted on 14 May, 2011 - 01:08
Glad to hear there will be free DLC amongst the fixes!

Have tried to play mp several times today and it still lags so bad you can barely move. Well, you do move but nowhere you want to go. A free dlc is nice but I'd gladly trade that for some decent online game action.
Posted on 14 May, 2011 - 01:19
Thanks SD, loving the quick fixes and dropping them before the weekend is just quality.
Posted on 14 May, 2011 - 01:24
Badman: THANK YOU! I've had faith in Splash Damage and they're showing that its well invested. Please keep the good times rolling! Those are key issues already being addressed, so thank you! I'd also like to point out what a laggy mess most new IP's are when first released. Give SD time, they'll turn Brink epic, you watch. Also, please consider whats in my sig. I think these 4 things are what Brink needs to stay relevant for years.
Posted on 14 May, 2011 - 01:31
For a free Ark! This is awesome. :)
Posted on 14 May, 2011 - 02:02
Wow! This are really great news. Thank you so much SD!! :)
Posted on 14 May, 2011 - 02:06
OMG they didn't fix the lag. What are you people reading?
Posted on 14 May, 2011 - 02:11
Hmmm, I have good internet and receive bad lag on many games due to host migration issues and host selection. I dont think making it 4v4 is the route i thought you guys where gunna go to fix the 360 lag. How about, i dont know, fixing how your game selects hosts? 7/10 games are Really laggy, 2/10 games have some lag nothing horrid, and 1/10 is smooth as butter. Id like to see more smooth running games, with 8v8 humans, i dont want to play bots that dumb
Posted on 14 May, 2011 - 02:12
Can you guys do an updated version of Railgun if it is possible? Some people might moan, but I think it is a great idea because it shows off the diverse nature of Brink, rather than having incredibly linear maps, objective wise. If that's not possible, something like Axis Lab would also suffice. Also: Having played Wolf for a long time, a few things off my wish list I would like to see in the game: The ability to kick people like NoQuarter. Covert Ops able to use weapons while in uni, rather than being largely useless. Throwing back grenades. No, don't wine. This is a locked balance because of the grenade's short fuse. If someone cannot provide the correct amount of vulnerability cooking the nade in proportion to it's timer while in the air or on the floor, they deserve to have it returned at full force. And yeah, that's about it. Wait! When am I going to be able to import .md5meshes and .md5anims into max? I've got some character modelin' to do, man!
Posted on 14 May, 2011 - 02:25
Free DLC? Why is it only free now?
Posted on 14 May, 2011 - 02:26
well, I suppose you could pay for it if you wanted
Posted on 14 May, 2011 - 02:28
Splash Damage , Thx Verry much
Posted on 14 May, 2011 - 02:28
Thank you Splash Damage, I'm glad you appreciate me (and fellow gamers including my many friends), as much as you appreciate us. As a token of our gratitude, my friend and I, who are now officially 'out of the closet' for Splash Damage/BRINK; will do ANYTHING for SD... ANYTHING! ;)
Posted on 14 May, 2011 - 02:28
OMG they didn't fix the lag. What are you people reading?
Lag is much better now , i allmost don't have anny actually... so just get good internet :) This game is just pure epicness :)
Posted on 14 May, 2011 - 02:30
Let me say it differently. This update guys is not the patch that you are waiting for, so please remain calm. Reworking the network code doesn't take 2 seconds to fix. Thx Splash Damage for this update and future DLC (free), but I'm still hoping that a future patch would fix the lag issues, because it's not normal. I have 30mb DL and 2mb Upload. On any game I get a ping between 5 and 50 on PC and it'S not normal to not experience any lag on PC and appear inthe green on console, but experience a lot of lag issues.
Posted on 14 May, 2011 - 02:32
Thanks SD for adding some DLC already. Glad to hear how much you all are trying to do to get the gamers with issues running smoothly. Keep on that list all working dedicated server cvars list, or remove the configs from the .paks and add all cvars to each .cfg file for each game mode. Keep the good stuff coming Thanks again.
Posted on 14 May, 2011 - 02:33
i really think it is great the first dlc is free i plan to download all them i really love the game. however i think u should add more skills lvl cap and guns to the game with the dlc event tho i know most games dont really do that with there dlc, well except for fall out that is the only game i really know that does that
Posted on 14 May, 2011 - 02:34
thank you so much guys!:) you're the very first game dev's i've experienced so far who give away free DLC stuff! keep up the good work!:D
Posted on 14 May, 2011 - 02:35
This looks more like a band-aid... At least it shows that SD IS working on the lag, they might just take some-time, until then, it just looks like they're putting scotch tape over everything. Blog summary You can now play 4v4 human players AND 8v8 4v4 should give less lag oh btw, free stuff. It's okay SD I still have faith. BLOPS had some major issues at launch, you're not the only one's, don't let the brats keep you down. Just my 1 1/2 cents
Posted on 14 May, 2011 - 02:36
I think BRINK LAG is making a point here game is still very laggy, I don't want them to take away the intended experience i want them to fix this game all the free maps in the world won't matter if the experience is not smooth.

Yeah, I can't say if the game is laggy or not, since I don't have it. But what I get from the blog is that this is a detour for the lag, which WILL be fixed, sooner if not later. Just think of it as an option that'll ease the lag for now. When the netcode itself is fixed just think of it as "I don't have to put up with 7 other idiots, just 3." PC seems to have got a patch that adressed the lag at its source. SD are console versions, give em some time, they're out of their element. "We are also releasing an incremental update for PC players via Steam that addresses AI, GPU, and server issues. See the full release notes for more information. Many of these fixes are being included in the full update for the 360 and PS3 versions." See, band aid. In the update notes, technical issues have been looked at.

when i alt tab out of game the game crashes after a couple mins..not sure if its the game crashing the local server or the server crashing the game. win 7 64bit.

:DSo glad to hear !!!! Still have my copy !!!!!

By halving the human players in campaign to help lag issues. Is that a temporary fix until you can fix the root problem or is this splash damage's permanent solution? I hope it's a temporary fix because I think that the campaign should be playable as you envisioned it to be on every medium you created the game for or you shouldn't have released the game. I didn't want to wait anymore though so I'm willing to be patient. As far as the AI go. AI are capable of ungodly things. Like one shotting you with SMGs and curbstomping incapped enemies while shooting at the same time. If I can't take out two people at the same time while curbstomping an incapped guy then no bot should be capable of that. And add to that how I've seen them walk through double streams of minigun fire to curbstomp incaps. They seem to go into god mode when they see someone incapped and you level past 10. I've started new characters just to enjoy playing against the bots.

I'm telling you these bots are the birth childs of superman it's just to easy for them and they're to lethal to the point it's not fun. I also hope this is just a temporary thing until they can figure out how to make lag less of an issue, it seems some people are being deluded by the free maps the game is still jack up, so i'll be waiting for a legit update on what the real solutions are.

a different crash now. after playing about 45 minutes online the game crashed and windows says not responding /end task and this appears windows 7 64bit, nvidia 480GTX, latest driver (270.61). also in-game i get some weird stuff on the top of the screen.. i seen this in the server browser a well, it comes and goes. pic: http://img825.imageshack.us/img825/4101/2011051300003.jpg

Good news, although I am slightly perturbed at how some major bugs weren't mentioned. Invisible bots (I'm not using ATI). Audio cutting out on certain maps. Crouch movement speed getting stuck. Although, bravo for quick updates. I'm sure the more major bugs are tougher to stamp out.
Posted on 14 May, 2011 - 04:20
Thank you so much for putting out such a great game. Personally I believe any company that released a review without playing online for a few days, should be shot! I can't wait for the DLC and to see what else you have in store for us! Thank you again for making a shooter worth playing online. Its been forever since I have had this much fun. Keep up the great work guys! And a :stroggtapir: for good luck

man you are fast. cheers to splash damage for going full throttle with fixing things and adding content!
Posted on 14 May, 2011 - 04:48
Yo badman, whats needed is we game modes similiar to your typical capture flag etc but with a brink twist. Because i can see multiplayer well "online co-op with randoms" growing thin... and fast.

This game would be amazing in the competitive scene, but there is no way to compete. How is a clan even supposed to play together if there is no lobby? I want all of my friends to play this, be able to strategize about what class everyone takes, have designated classes and all that, but there is no point, because there isn't a way to play with them without a lot of luck. The whole reason people don't play objective modes is because unless you have a group of friends, you're gonna get railroaded. And you made a whole game about objectives, and took out the one feature objective maps hinge on. If you guys patched a lobby in and put out a demo, this game would blow up. Everyone is tired of Call of Duty, but no game steps up. Make it Brink, please?

I seriously don't understand what the big deal about the lobbies are.

Yeah, this game isn't Halo with maps sized for the player count. All the maps were sized for 8V8 and balanced with care for brink. Console players are not getting that game. I have fios with an amazing connection and I have never seen lag like this. Across the board it's unplayable and now the fix is a nerf. How are they going to fix this? The launch bombed and chased away everyone on my fl who got the game. I'm so pissed. This game is incredible and yet broken. There is no excuse for an mp focused game to be unplayable. Pitiful. It's over. There will never be the launch excitement to revive my fl. It's really over. Can't get those friends back. And you need them for the teamwork they bring. Randoms don't coordinate like your friends would. And SD threw it all away with this broken launch. They couldn't afford to screw up this launch with a new ip.

You don't even know if that NERF is permanent. So calm yourself.

Great job, SD. :) Thank you for listening and reacting quickly to problems so far. Can't wait to see what the dlc will be.

They are not going to be able to fix p2p net code. This is gears of war 2 all over again only worse. Gears 3 is getting dedicated servers. For a really good reason. How does this game even select hosts? What a disaster. Failure to launch. We were all robbed.

Any info on mod tools, will there be any?

In spite of the patch, a majority of players are still experiencing horrendous lag during online matches on the Xbox 360. Splash Damage needs to work harder before they go patting themselves on the back.

do you guys think theyll use the dlc to fix some of the issues like the spawns on the map like how they did with monday night combat?
Posted on 14 May, 2011 - 06:57
Great to hear! The pc update today is fantastic! Loving the game, keep it up! I might buy it for 360 also just to support Splash Damage more! Keep the support up and this will be my new fav online shooter!

gah. even if the simple "word" DLC makes me shiver, i appreciate that you guys release the first (how many are there coming) for free. i also, and i think im not alone, appreciate that you keep communicating with the community. thats very important and makes a difference. i can excuse major flaws of a game if just the devs are talking to me and tell me whats going on. so, im looking forward to the next patch. performance both on graphics and network still need a lot of improvement. (even on pc) (btw. i didnt tested it enough, but try to add - seta g_antiLag "0" - to your autoexec.cfg. it must be created in your brink/base frolder. just tested one game with a 200+ ping but i had no lag ingame. if it gets worse, change the value back to "1")

A new blog entry has been added: [drupal=807]Brink Updates Live, Free DLC Coming[/drupal]
So is this an option we can change or a forced 8 max players in a game? Although its a good idea (like I mentioned in my post) it seems a little low. I would of thought if the game detects the best connection some one should have 1-2meg upload. I can host 12 on CoD with approx 1.8 up. Also a local/best search option would be nice, so UK can play UK only if possible. It was all European last night and although not terrible it was bad at times.

Oh I'm bad, first post here didn't contain all of the info. So other than a local search option, ignore me lol. :o Ps... thanks for listening.

Please instead of making free maps, put in a pre game lobby system. Searching for a game and waiting for it to load only to find an empty server is the single stupidest thing to happen to any game ever. Instead of trying to find a specific game already in play on a specific map, I'd much rather be able to join a game that's getting set up, allow for people to join in teams, and then vote for a map to play, more like the Left 4 Dead set up. This game is really close to becoming one of those $5 bin fillers, and it's so easy to make it the best multi player experience available on consoles. If you guys have the time to make more new maps for free, I don't see what the hold up is on the lobby systems. Seriously, how many complaints and requests does it take? What is the possible hesitation to provide it?

That's a little harsh because at the core of what Brink Lags had to say is a great deal of truth. Gear of War 2 was a shambolic mess upon release and remained that way until the most recent title update. Props to Epic for figuring out how to fix the matchmaking but it took them way too long. Hopefully it won't take Splash Damage a year and a half to make their online vs mode playable all the time because Brink is drowning in potential.

wow, although i am happy this is happening, SD is not really fixing the lag problem... just diverting it. either this is them being lazy or this is a temporary fix to hold us over. and could anyone explain why SOME people have no lag at all?
Posted on 14 May, 2011 - 11:48
Add some subtitles in the next patch and ill rebuy it. this is nonsense.

We consider all of the feedback we're getting from the community. The PC version received a first round of AI tweaks today, which we'll be bringing to the consoles in the title update.
See, because I know how to read I don't like this. He responded directly to the comment about the AI because something is being done about that. For the lobbies, it got grouped with "we consider all of the feedback". Which sounds like they're considering it right along with TDM, flame throwers, female characters and all that other "feedback" that's never going to be in the game. Here's a hint guys, F*** THE AI. Friendly AI being smart or stupid would be a null point if I could replace them with friends! You making the AI smarter only sounds like you're not going to let us play with friends. Brink is a wonderful game, but once the honeymoon is over its going to be a question of "What are my friends doing?" Cause I know that's the first thing I check when I get on Xbox. If Brink gets a lobby I know I can pull us all together and go have fun. But if I know I'll have to join a game and try to invite them one by one and hope they get in, it'll just be easier and more fun to go play something I know we can all get into. If there's no lobbies soon, I would be willing to bet you won't need a patch to fix the lag because nobody will be playing online to notice it.

It's so nice to have Dev's that listen and are intent on providing a good product. nothing like those Bungy guys or 353 was it? I don't know, one of those teams that got too big for their britches. Thanks SD
