Brink PC Update and New Dedicated Server Released

The latest game update for the PC version of Brink is now available on Steam, containing several fixes and improvements. Among other things, this update addresses the sound dropping out on certain maps when playing networked games and adds the ability to filter servers by player numbers. As before, all you have to do to get the update is sign into your Steam client (and make sure it's not in offline mode).

If you're running a Brink server, there's also an improved version of the Standalone Dedicated Server to go with the update. You can grab the new server via your Steam client's Tools tab.

Full changelog follows below:

General:

  • Fixed sound dropping out when playing networked games
  • Improved graphical performance, especially when using Ambient Occlusion
  • Fixed voice packs being reset to default when you delete another character
  • Removed ability to use certain cheat protected commands in challenges
  • Fixed memory leak/crash when alt-tabbed out

User Interface:

  • Full servers are no longer filtered out of the browser
  • Added support for entering a range of numbers (i.e. 10-12) in server filters
  • Reduced font size in the server browser
  • Exiting Head customization returns to the correct menu
  • Fixed being unable to bind KP_Enter in the UI
  • Increased font size of in-game text chat
  • 'Enter' now closes text chat prompt if empty
  • Fixed challenge in menu flashing even after completion

Dedicated Servers:

  • Improved dedicated server CPU performance
  • Fixed NPC not spawning for escort objectives online on servers using unsupported cvars

Badman, in this posting you guys made last week, you said that "we should see performance and stability improvements in future driver revisions from both parties." While the new patch is better, it's still not giving me the type of performance I expect. Does this mean we should see some drivers from each respective GPU vendor soon that work in conjunction with the patch today?

To answer your question Quad, Crispy already clarified a little bit earlier....
AMD decide when AMD release updates to their drivers. You can follow progress updates here: http://twitter.com/#!/catalystcreator
I'm sure its same for nvidia too :)

Are dedi servers more stable now? Nothing mentioned about the random crashes or not returning to default config after a hijack

I'm not really asking "when" the drivers are coming. I'm asking "if" specific drivers to help Brink are coming since their last posting insinuated as much.

why does update cause the entire thing to have to re-download...both server patches that were released in the past couple weeks i had to re-download 1.2GB of data.. not a big deal but it's a waste of bandwidth.
Posted on 23 May, 2011 - 23:36
Woah! Was not at all expecting such a small patch to fix my performance so much. Got a 30fps increase right away and its much smoother (40-60 on most maps). Now all you gotta do is unlock some cvars so I can get 120fps and I'll be really happy :).

@Badman Wow this game officially sucks. My last nerves were with this update, i really wanted this game to work. If it wasn't fixed now, its never gunna be. This game is broken for good. **** it im sick of waiting and ****. This "big update" was the biggest let down ever, actually it wasnt.... the game was. Also, I was a hugh W:ET fan, used to play it all the time. You let me down, I'm never gunna preorder a game from you guys ever again. I can't believe you would **** your players like this. I hope you ****ing read this too. This was the patch I was hopeing to fix all the ****ing problems, didn't do anything. You guys should be getting ****ing sued for selling a "non working game". I hope your company goes right down the drain. Thats how much hate I have right now. Edit: I'll admit, with my ATI 5770, I do get some better FPS, but when I put the game on Low settings, my FPS should be at 100 not 30FPS. Why do I get more FPS when my settings are High? That makes no sense. My framerate is all over, from 30-120(and OVER). WTF.

Are you by any chance renaming the videos so they don't play when you start the game?
Posted on 23 May, 2011 - 23:45
nah, im referring to the dedicated server files that re-download the entire thing.

Hmm, oh well see ya. I never had any FPS issues with my copy of the game other than the popping/loss of sound issue.. Game being run on high on my rig.

Your running good because of ur Nvidia GTX 460. Im not gunna buy a new video card (i wanna upgrade actually, but still really dont need too) for Brink only. Thats just stupid.

What kind of video card do you have? I wonder they made model specific fixes. Excited to see if my 9600GT will push some more frames when I get home.
Posted on 23 May, 2011 - 23:58
At first glance, AntiAliasing looks much better, game runs smoother overall. Font still gets screwed up and the server sometimes still doesn't accept the password :). Only played two maps, but respawn timers appear to have been tweaked. Nice job, keep it up please.

Increase the size of the chat is a Big fail imo ! Already to many information on the hud !! there is some massive player name, some massive white waypoint for medics, and now some ****ING massive chat ..... Please give us the possibility to customize our hud and crosshair !!!!!!!! Why do you block all that cvars ? seta g_playerarrowIconSize "10" seta g_playerIconSize 10 seta g_waypointSizeMax 10 doesn't work ..... please allow some customisation on the hud !! really to many informations ! and please allow us also the cvar to change the chat size and get it back like before ! thx

I'm guessing it's because you deleted the movie files so it redownloads them.

no he is talking about the Brink dedicated Server, not the client. It got a 1,2 GB update, I got it too.
Posted on 24 May, 2011 - 00:22
please make the next update focus on gameplay issues and balance. technical showstoppers appear to be done away with for the most part.

i think font size could use a cvar to adjust the size.. it is kind big on my resolution.. pic: http://img847.imageshack.us/img847/297/2011052300002.jpg

Also the sound completely cutting out still remains Trying "s_restart" crashes the game

I am not sure about him but I had the same problem. You made a good point because I did rename the folder. Will be sure to change next time!

Anybody know how to turn shadows back on? r_shadows doesn't seem to do anything anymore. At least it doesn't for me. This patch has given me more fps but I still get frequent drops.
Posted on 24 May, 2011 - 00:50
Bold and oversize font make my eyes blinking ! same for the medics waypoints, and now a fat big chat !! when there is a lot of stuff on the screen you just can't see if someone is coming, just let us plays with the size and the alpha value to make the game more playable ! thx in advance
Posted on 24 May, 2011 - 00:53
sound bug is still there and now on the tower level for me. before i only had the sound problem on refuel. hopefully there is a hotfix instead of another wait for a patch.

Kinda getting that feeling.
Posted on 24 May, 2011 - 01:29
to show us Bethesda won't allow SDK
possibly one nail in the coffin containing the life expectancy of Brink... What is it with game devs these days hinting at SDK in pre release interviews then never producing? Borderline false advertising if you ask me. DONT EVEN BRING UP MOD TOOLS IF YOU ARENT TOTALLY SURE YOU WILL HAVE THEM.....
Posted on 24 May, 2011 - 01:37
to show us Bethesda won't allow SDK
im beginning to think Bethesda is evil and whether most of the decisions are up to them and not SD..

How do you know it's Bethesda? Skyrim will have mod tools and guess who is making Skyrim? Also, an SDK is the least of our worries right now. The game needs a lot of work first.
Posted on 24 May, 2011 - 02:15
Patch feels smoother to me, but I was never checking my FPS before so it's hard to say. I like the bigger font, makes it easier to read chat, but I agree that this needs to be an adjustable setting. Would also like default global chat to be other than white. I am getting more random crashes to desktop while loading next map since patch. I haven't noticed the sound bug coming back, and haven't seen seen invisible players yet (tho I'm only a couple of hours into the patched game).

Sound still dropping on Security + Refuel, infact even worse now on Security, drops immediatly...Text glitches still present (not sure if you addressed that problem)...FPS wise no change but still average 80-140, no crashes runs well, just that bloody annoying sound bug which kills the game stonedead, so in my eyes a GAMEBREAKER... Please guys look into it again, i can't tell you how disapointing it is to find a good server, both teams evenly balanced, having some fantastic games then either 1 of those maps loads and it kills it, game over, head on keyboard... Win7 64bit I7 920 Quad ATI 5870 (11.2) X-FI soundcard (not onboard, latest drivers) 6 gig ram

Gained 20-30 fps but disappointed that demos and first person pov spectating has not been addressed :[
Posted on 24 May, 2011 - 03:23
just played Refuel as Security and the sound was good throughout the match. Win 7 64bit Asus P5N-E SLI onboard audio Core 2 Duo E6420 overclocked @3.2ghz 2gb ddr2 800 * Text glitches still present. * wasnt following my FPS but it feels smoother now.
Posted on 24 May, 2011 - 03:24
Not much of a patch imo. Still sound glitches, text issues, and locked performance related cvars as well as the obnoxious icons and text we have to deal with as medics. I can wait for game play adjustments, even animation changes such as buffing, because I understand those take time. But I'm really getting frustrated with the lack of the technical issues being properly addressed. There is also no reason to lock performance related cvars and clutter our view making it impossible to track with sometimes perfectly placed icons/text to eclipse enemy outlines, especially in the distance. These are fixes that can be done very quickly even if say "at your own risk" I'm fine with that.
Posted on 24 May, 2011 - 03:28
So, post-patch I am experiencing: Sound cuts out on shipyard Narrator doesn't know how much time is left (says 5 minutes when it's 5 seconds) 17/16 players in server browser for some servers Thanks all I can think of now because it's late. Does the patch need to be in place on client and server for the fix to work?

sorry bud, but it's easier to release PC patches, they don't need MS and Sony certification. Plus PC is their fanbase at this moment

...plus, xbox patch has already been released to MS
Posted on 24 May, 2011 - 07:31
i still have fps dropdowns in larger areas of the maps (i tested aquarium), just like before the patch. crosshairs either seem stretched or the size is increased for some guns (carb). spread didnt seem to be increased though. also, i didnt read anything in the changelog that crosshairs or spray got changed. why is that? im sorry, but this thing isnt called a patch, its a hotfix. how small was it anyways? i didnt even notice steam updated something.

Just remember that we want major re-balance patching, and the xbox community wants a game lobby and easier bots .

^ What he said. This was really nothing more then a hotfix.Ok server side not that was a huge update but client side was like......5 MB? I have WLAN and download was finished after some seconds. So,not really big. Changed nothing for me.The last chance is 11.6 now.Otherwise this game will have a nice place in my trash bin. Oh,before i forget it.Sound bugs are NOT fixed. They are still there.

The thread title says "PC update" not "PC 5gb overhaul patch". whining about the size of the update is really clutching at straws, would you rather they held back on the fixes they implemented in this update until they fixed other stuff thus having to wait longer or something? Give me small frequent updates over large infrequent updates any day of week.

I'm thankful that we have had 2 patches in 2.5 weeks addressing some issues however I don't want the same thing to happen toBrink as happened to Monday Night Combat. A patch every 3/4 weeks but no new maps for 4 months (Even then it was 1 sucky map) and modtools said to be released in January which never came. The game eventually died to under 100 players.
Posted on 24 May, 2011 - 08:53
Certain areas on certain maps are always going to be more testing than others, anyone who is expecting 150 fps consistently on every part of the map is deluding themselves.

Not 150.150 FPS is not needed anyway it will just toast your gfx card. But playable 40-50'ish FPS without stuttering should be no problem. :( 8vs8,mediocre graphics. Were not talking about Arma 2 huge 500vs500 battles with bots where you NEED a Quad/i5/i7 to play that game without bad FPS. I'll just trust SD now that they worked hard on things, now it's up to AMD.Hope they can deliver.

Last instance is now 11.6 i think. MAYBE SD made their job good and it's up to AMD and Nvidia.Who knows.time will tell.If this game would only run on DirectX and not Open"GoodLuck". *sadface* Maybe there will be a BETA 11.6 driver but ATI sayed they have a better look on that so BETA drivers dont get on the internet. But as we know, like everything gets leaked nowadays. ^^

Well, I've a sub-par rig (E6400 + GeForce 8800GT, 3G of ultra ****ty RAM), I'm using the "ultra low" settings seen somewhere here (ie, game is horrible) I max at 30 FPS in match :( At least, it's now constistent and I don't have drop-off anymore I was having ArmA2-like performances (thing which is not impacting at all in A2, but handicapping here :) ), now it's getting better. Improving step by step. Let's just hope it's fast enough improvement for keeping the playerbase ...

I'am really concerned about that. the new AMD driver will come in June, which is still 7 days away and i doubt AMD will release the driver on 1 of June. :( This fix is needed NOW and not in 7 days when half of the playersbase we got left is gone too. -.- Many players move on from this game every day and i can't blame them for that. Going to stem some weights now to get rid of my anger about Brink or should i say Bethesda.

Sound is still dying in MP games - and when that happens, people also seem to go invisible. Had an online campaign game earlier - once the sound had disappeared, I couldn't see 2 of my team-mates and only one of the opponents were visible.
Does the update include fixing server bots being invisible?
I think not :(

im not exactly whing about the size of the update, but to what it does to me performance wise. and thats nothing. where is the performance increase? i dont see it. "especially" when ambient occlusion is activated. yea, remove "especially" and put an "if" there. that might be even true. anyways, i dont even see a difference with ao enabled or not. my frames drop, ok, thats the difference. in conclusion: my gaming experience is the same. i still have those ugly dropdowns that destroy the fun of the game.

5/23 Patch - Thanks for the patch ! The Good :) movement appears much smoother less sluggishness (lag) on server graphics seem to be sharper (Nvidia) sound on refuel is audible with no fade outs ( LAN dedicated and MP dedicated servers ) The Bad AO still halves framerates {specs in signature below) but its livable The Ugly :/ General rule of thumb for fps is that "stuff" in the midline and middle of the screen is "bad". This includes icons, chat text, mission objective text, hud positions * After ready up there is an additional black box center screen with a countdown timer . Is this a glitch? http://www.sunlitgames.net/images/dodforum/brink_centerscore.jpg * Duplicate mission objective statements, one smaller and faded Above the other. http://www.sunlitgames.net/images/dodforum/brink_doublemission.jpg * Corrupted fonts persist in game over turrets, in the Medic Revive hud, Weapon selection screen and Options screens * The changelog indicates that chat font size has been increased :( Are there client cvars that can be used to customize chat font size? Are there client cvars that can be used to customize overhead icon size or alert icon sizes?
Posted on 24 May, 2011 - 16:14
This does not bode well for the console patch. If the console patch doesn't fix the lag, I'm giving up on this one. Robbed.

Low fps can't be SD problem it's amd. BTW check http://twitter.com/#!/catalystcreator he says about brink hotfix this week!

Well as of the latest patch: Sound is still dropping FPS is less smooth than before the update (nVidia GT240 1gig) latest drivers In co-op enemies still disappear For me, this game is just going to be another one that sits in my steam games list but never gets played............at least until it works. Will be checking it out again on the next patch. Fingers crossed for that. :(

Hi! Just wanted to tell that I still have the Sound dropping Bug and that I still have the Fontbug etc. after the Update from 23. May 2011. Also, the Server Performance ist not improved afaik. Is there something else i had to do? Regards

I really like the change of font and style on the server browser! Someone mentioned on a server that he didn't get sound on security tower though.

That annoying corrupted text glitch is still there though, I would think that would be a real easy thing to fix no?

The game is certainly running smoother for me because of this latest update. I have an i7-920 with a Nvidia GTX 275 and can sometimes maintain a stable 60 FPS, especially on the smaller, indoor sections of maps (like most of Aquarium). I used to get significant FPS drops in the open areas of Security Tower and other larger maps, but now my FPS drops maybe 10-20 frames less in those areas. Overall, I am pleased with the game's being smoother, but I hope that this patch represents only a small fraction of the overall improvements that are yet to come.
