Announcing Batman: Arkham Origins Multiplayer

We're excited to reveal that Splash Damage is creating the multiplayer component of the eagerly anticipated Batman: Arkham Origins. This is the first time an Arkham game is set to have multiplayer of any kind, and we've put together what we think is a unique and authentic extension of Arkham's acclaimed single player.

Batman: Arkham Origins multiplayer takes the series' trademark Invisible Predator gameplay online, and allows you to play as Batman, Robin, or an elite member of The Joker or Bane's gang in exciting 3 vs 3 vs 2 multiplayer matches. Watch the official reveal trailer to see it in action:

Being able to create a multiplayer take on what's without a doubt one of gaming's most beloved franchises has been really exciting for us, and we can't wait for you to get your hands on it.

Batman: Arkham Origins is coming to PC, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and Wii U on 25 October 2013 - more information about the game is available on the official Batman: Arkham Origins website.

What are your first impressions of Batman: Arkham Origins multiplayer?

Erf... It's a bad thing for me since the only version i was planing to buy was the Wii U version.

This could be very cool. We haven't seen enough asymmetric MP as of late. Can't wait to get my hands on this. Best of luck on a good launch guys!

Oh very exciting indeed. Is this the console game that was announced previously or is that something else entirely?

This is the multiplayer component of the previously announced Batman Arkham Origins, which is coming to PC, PS3, Xbox 360, and Wii U (though multiplayer will only be part of the first three).

Okay so the PS4 title/technology/thingamiginny is something else. Yeah makes sense.
Posted on 31 July, 2013 - 14:51
Congrats... t-shirts?

I notice on the PS3 specific trailer there is no FireTeam logo in the credits, does this mean only the PC release utilises the FireTeam backend?
Posted on 31 July, 2013 - 15:22
So there's something more also to come ? ..Like a Console only Game ?
Posted on 31 July, 2013 - 15:27
still waiting for the bat-tapir emoticon

omg that is awesooome ! :D
Posted on 31 July, 2013 - 15:54
I don't like the Batman games, their gameplay is full of contextual actions. Hope that SD will make something better that the current games.
Posted on 31 July, 2013 - 15:57
Awesome! :-))
Posted on 31 July, 2013 - 16:01
I got both games and they are in my top 10 singleplayer games. Best of luck to splashdamage.

Okay awesome news! Does this mean that my progress/awards/playtime will be synced across all platforms? Or even cross-platform playability (PC guys and PS3 guys in the same match)?

No GFWL, then?

:DDD a real german badman
Posted on 31 July, 2013 - 16:36
Looks very dynamic. Love the idea of 3v3v2. Are the two teams of 3 going to be played as a 3rd person shooter, or a 1st person shooter? Looks like 3rd person in the trailer.
Posted on 31 July, 2013 - 17:01
Nice. But I hope it has not any bad impact on the developpment of DB :-)
Posted on 31 July, 2013 - 17:06
Wow:eek:, I'll buy it. Brink+Batman-U= this awesome baby. Even has a cute little UAV and some kind of shields; both things not so different from the stuff we got in the Agents of Change DLC. It's 3rd person, but WTF it looks awesome; I'm on board.
Posted on 31 July, 2013 - 17:09
Congrats guys. Can we have Batman skins in DB now?
Posted on 31 July, 2013 - 17:10
Nice. But I hope it has not any bad impact on the developpment of DB :-)
Like more money for the production of DB, and thereby more time to polish the game, instead of just cranking it out and producing half assed pay-stuff, just to get the invested money back? That kinda bad impact?
Posted on 31 July, 2013 - 17:11
Wow, another reason to buy this game. My questions are: 1. For balancing the game, does Echo used for monitoring the gameplay? 2. DRM or something third party used for running the game? 3. How many multiplayer modes planned for Arkham Origins? 4. How many maps? Sorry, but this is because i just feel too excited, Batman with multiplayer = Awesome superhero game
Posted on 31 July, 2013 - 17:36
Looks impressive! Might try it out as soon as I can!
Posted on 31 July, 2013 - 17:52
I got really excited... then I heard it wasn't coming to Wii U. Now I am uber bummed cause that is my only console right now.

Here's a little bit more information from WB on the Wii U situation:
"MP will be available for Xbox 360, PS3 and PC," a Warner Bros. spokesperson told Eurogamer. "The team is focusing development efforts on platforms with the largest MP audience."

That didn't cheer me up at all.

That's awesome, and just perfect. Game looks awesome, it's definitely going to be on my to buy list, just too bad we have to wait until October to play it :(
Posted on 31 July, 2013 - 18:36
Will the game be cheaper on Wii U? I just don't know. It oddly felt like they don't care for people like me.

This is a huge contract for you guys, very happy and proud! Congratulations.
Posted on 31 July, 2013 - 20:38
Wow did not expect this, well done to SD - this is a massive game to be a part of. I love the arkham games and although I don't think the franchise needed multiplayer im sure it will be good fun to play.

Indeed, good luck! Hopefully it will bring in some nice coins to invest in DB, lol Back on topic. I wonder how you will keep people interested in playing the multiplayer. With the background of this franchise being single player, I'd think most people would be most interested in playing Bats, not henchman number 1, 2 or 3. Won't you get games that start, do the role assignments, and then have people quit on mass, trying to join another game so they have a new chance of playing the hero... eventually dying out the multiplayer as a whole. It probably will be explained at a later date (would be nice to see some gameplay vids!), but it is somewhat of a worry. I wouold love to try out the multiplayer, but after Brink, I am not looking forward to waiting around empty servers. Will you be including bots? Enough negativity! The concept seems really nice, checked some previews. Bit of suspense, mind-****s going on with the bats coming out of nowhere, being careful not to bump into the enemy. And it seems to really reward teamplay, just the way I like it.
Posted on 31 July, 2013 - 20:52
Great news! I'm happy, confused, delirious, uncertain and a thousand other conflicting emotions. GL&HF, next stop... world domination :D
Posted on 31 July, 2013 - 20:54
I didn't see useful info on the official site but here's a news article about the game mode as apparent press is allowed to talk about it now. snip'd from larger article.
The most interesting thing about it is its 3v3v2 format: two teams of gangs fight over control points while a pair of player-controlled heroes swoop around, disrupting their progress. The heroes—Batman and Robin—win by filling an “intimidation meter” that increases whenever they knock out a thug (with bonuses awarded for varying the type of takedown that’s executed) and depletes whenever a hero dies. Team Joker and Team Bane—the gangs—win by exhausting the respawn ticket pool of their opponent or by holding control points for longer in the match.

Congratulation Splashdamage for successfully attracting externally funded, large shooter projects like this. Really great!
Posted on 31 July, 2013 - 21:52
I was a little disappointed that they uploaded the USA trailer instead of the international one. :( So let me get this right, the Joker and Bane teams get XP for area control whereas B&R get XP for kills? Also how do you keep it fair so it's not always someone else that gets to play the bosses when they unlock?
Posted on 31 July, 2013 - 22:04
That's a bit of a coup! nice one, all the best with it, will probably get it for the boy (erm and me) at Christmas..
Posted on 31 July, 2013 - 22:55
looks poor
Who let this guy in? Where the crap does this game look poor? I mean really, what exactly lead you to this profound conclusion?
Posted on 31 July, 2013 - 23:04
Looks awesome. I love the concept. This will add some great flavor to the Batman Mix. I wouldn't have guessed you guys were working on Batman behind the scenes. Cool stuff. :)

I have in good faith for all that is holy that WB lets the green light for Wii U Multiplayer. I loved Enemy territory games.
Posted on 1 August, 2013 - 05:12
Keep dreaming. Splashdamage never released a game for the Wii u. This basically means that it's unknown territory for them. And it would cost WB to much money / time to invest. Of course it's easier to say that the playe base of the Wii u is to low, which is also true.
Posted on 1 August, 2013 - 06:32
sales of the Wii U have been hugely disappointing, I'm pretty sure WB is waiting for other titles to do well before devoting monies to a Wii U game in multiplayer, it will be available in single player from the get go

PETITION TO BRING ONLINE MODE TO WII U: www.change.org/petitions/splash-damage-online-mode-for-wiiu-batman-arkham-origins
I appreciate the notion, but decisions about platforms are entirely up to the publisher...

Everybody gets XP for loads of in-game actions, it's the win conditions that are different for the Gangs and the Heroes. The first person to get to the door and doesn't get taken out while opening it gets to become Joker or Bane, depending on which Gang they're in. It could always be the same person, but we always see a decent mix.

This was of course a huge concern when we started the project, so one of our initial priorities was making sure that it's actually great fun to play as the Elites. We eventually had to add an option to opt-out of being a Hero in the next round (some sites have reported on this), so that people can keep playing as an Elite if they want!

We can't answer 2-4 just yet (patience!), but we do use a project-specific version of Echo made by Fireteam to track stats.

It would be really nice if this supported cross-platform multiplayer, ie. a pc player can join an xbox360 or ps3 player - is it possible or does the xbox live / ps3 console restrictions prevent it?
Posted on 1 August, 2013 - 16:01
"Das Spiel ist was für fanboys. Nicht mehr und nicht weniger. Und auch wenn Fireteam den MP macht heisst das nicht dass es gut wird." -scre4m Why not write this as a reply, in order to explain yourself, but as a personal rep and with a frickin red star? You didn't say what you don't like in B:AO, you just stated, that it looks poor; but in wich regard? Actually visually, or gameplay wise, or because it's in 3rd person, or because you just hate Batman? Next time simply say what you don't like and I'm sure everybody is cool with your opinion, even if they don't share it. But like this^ ? PS: Yeah, you can call me a fanboy if you so desire. And that's why I'm quite exited to get my hands on B:AO.

I know that microsoft don't allow this with xbox live (its a closed system). PS3 did it with portal 2 coop with the help of steam, but I cannot see it happening here :(

I am sure this team is talented enough to handle it. If the Wii U base is low, gimped games won't help!

but you get it $10 cheaper "Warner Bros. has confirmed the Wii U SKU will be priced differently to its Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC brothers, with a $10 difference both versions."
Posted on 1 August, 2013 - 23:30
I'd be interested to hear some more about the Wii U version, WB seems to at least have some experience with the console so might have some ideas for that version that could be interesting and perhaps even unique to that console. Reading that people (in comments on previews, not here) are not going to buy the game for *any* console because this particular version doesn't get multiplayer seems somewhat overdone. Also, thanks for your answer Exedore. Good to see that you guys were aware of some issues people might have with a multiplayer for this franchise from the start and you tried to overcome this by trying to make the elites more interesting. I for one think it would be awesome to play the badguy and have a shot at Batman, or no... Robin! :oppressor:
Posted on 2 August, 2013 - 08:38
Sorry, but you're not going to hear anything out of us about the Wii U version other than what WB has said, because there's just nothing more to say on our end.
Posted on 2 August, 2013 - 10:22

I myself find the Batman universe more interesting than Bats himself* and therefore I have no problem with playing the baddies, or, like in GCI, a bunch of wannabes. I'm not 10yrs old and like to play pretend with a Batman costume on; and the shown violence in the trailer implies, that no 10year old is supposed to play that game either. With other words; people who are old enough to play this game won't break out into tears, just because they can't play the Bat all the time. * read, heard and watched Bruce's origin over and over again, I got why he is what he is, and why he does what he does, but what's allways funny and interesting, that are his villains. Sometimes Batman/Bruce even get's outright boring due to all his seriousness, political correctness and his ridiculous amount of gadgets, and an IQ that'd even make Einstein pale in comparison. The Joker, Harley, Scarecrow, the Penguin and the whole lot of Arkham's class "A" lunatics, that's what really get's the audiences interested. At least that's the case for me. Batman has definitely the coolest foes in the DCU.
Posted on 2 August, 2013 - 11:38
I can understand this is a decision made by publisher... but honestly, I don't think SOMETHING MISSING is suitable to sale in the same price... So if the decision can not be change, please mark a lower price when it comes out... Publisher can release the multi-player part as payable DLC later... if IT STILL CAN have enough player to buy it and think it worth to pay for it... [I know, users on Wii U cannot provide a big market]

I've not been able to find confirmation of this; you'll know it's for sure when places like Amazon have the pre-order price as cheaper. Of course, the decision is down to the publisher.

Yep I know, but I've not seen anything from WB, and they don't name the spokesperson so I can't verify it. So taking it with a hefty pinch of salt.

lol, in Canada the PC version is $10 cheaper http://www.ebgames.ca/collection/batman-arkham-origins?cid=soc_10003582 also says Steam is required to install and play, how's that integrate with Fireteam ?

Sorry to disappoint, but the default MP skin is exactly the same as the SP skin. It could just be the lighting. Fortunately, you'll have a lot of options...

so when are we gonna hear about new game modes and villains? Single player is releasing all this new information and announcing new assassins, but multiplayer has been dead quiet since the beta, and before that it was quiet, too. Someone asked Eric Holmes at Comic Con if he could talk about the multiplayer side, but he said he was not allowed to do to the fact that their studio is not making it and they cannot speak on your studio's behalf. So will we be hearing anything before release, or are you guys going to keep it quiet?

It's not at all up to us; this is controlled entirely by WB. Eric has done a great job of forwarding questions to me, but often they're questions that I'm not allowed to answer.
