Dirty Bomb Closed Alpha Officially Begins - Join Today!

Get ready to deploy, Soldier! We’re hugely excited to announce that the Dirty Bomb Closed Alpha has officially begun, and we’ve started mailing out alpha keys to members of the Dirty Bomb Founder’s Club. If you’ve already joined up, keep checking your inbox. If you’re dying to get into the Closed Alpha, visit the Founder’s Club website. You’ll be directly supporting Dirty Bomb’s development, and are able to shape what the game becomes through your feedback.

Dirty Bomb is powered by a great little tool we call Echo, and it’s a big part of why we’re able to give you access to Dirty Bomb this early in development. Developed by the talented chaps over at Fireteam, Echo basically collects and visualises detailed data from all of Dirty Bomb’s multiplayer servers, allowing us to balance and optimise the game in ways we couldn’t before.

We’re so excited by Echo that we’ve put together a brand-new video showcasing its role in Dirty Bomb’s development. Take a look:

Thanks to Echo, every single match that’s played in Dirty Bomb actively contributes to making the game better. If you’re itching for a chance to help test Dirty Bomb and give us your feedback during the Closed Alpha, check out the Dirty Bomb Founder’s Club. We hope to see you online in Dirty Bomb!

Awesome job on this! That "Echo" analytics system looks freakin' sweet! I can only imagine how invaluable a tool that must be for mappers. Really amazing stuff and makes me even more excited for the future of this game.

If you go through the process of purchasing whichever other pack you want it automatically deducts what you've paid so far, so to go from Veteran to Legendary (for example) costs $90, not $120.
Posted on 30 January, 2013 - 19:39
Cheers kendle. Might upgrade today! :D

Glad to see that darkangel and some other respectable persons are in the closed alpha. Know I at least know that the game will get good feedback.

lol You have the gall to ask people for money to gain access to your games after how you poorly handled BRINK? Stay classy, Splash Damage!

Alternative interpretation: They realised why Brink tanked. So they ditched publishers, built a crapload of interlinked systems designed to make player feedback their single biggest informer, and then went out of their way to make it possible for the community to help them make the game amazing. And then they added a fee up front so they filter out everyone who isn't willing to put their money where their mouth is. You don't spend $120 on playing the game early. You spend $120 on having a game developer make a game based on your specifications. This is not a small thing. Think of it like a kickstarter. Help pay to make something great happen.

Looks great. Congratz to all the guys who are in the alpha! :) Btw guys: Dave Johnston (Map Creator in this video) is THE GUY behind de_dust and de_dust2 and also did maps for Brink as far as I can think. Really great News.

Tell that to the players that pre-ordered BRINK and who continue to regret it to this day. If it wasn't for idiots like me who bought into the hype and put their faith in the developer of Enemy Territory, this project wouldn't even exist.
Posted on 30 January, 2013 - 20:52
I think I got the $50 out of brink that I spent, it was fun for a while. If only the amount I invested in DB would start paying off right now, if you catch my drift.

I sympathise; people got burned with Brink. You're angry about it, and you have every right to be. If you don't feel comfortable giving up money in advance, that's understandable. It appears that SD have realised how badly their reputation was burned by Brink, because right now they appear to be doing everything they can to not repeat that mistake. If DB is an attempt to do things properly, you have a couple of options: 1) You can **** all over that attempt to do things properly, so from SD's & Bethesda's perspective it doesn't make any difference if they Brink it up or not. 2) You can hold fire for the moment, and then if it turns out that DB is great you can support it, so they people who made the decision to make Brink happen like it did see how much Brink could have been if they'd chosen differently. The first is more satisfying now, but in the long term I think it makes more sense to set things up so Brink doesn't happen again. If publishers get wind that putting effort in is a way to inspire customer loyalty, maybe they'll try it more often.

Waiting my invite ;)

What little faith i had left in this developer after BRINK was released has already been depleted. I expected long term support and a continued flow of improvements and content to the game. Instead i paid for a broken and unpolished product that was practically dead on arrival. By the time they bothered to balance some of the weapons, the game was already dead. The free DLC that they gave out was just a desperate attempt to rekindle people's interest in the game. So much for that.

SD knows how the game should look like :) It's their first "independent" game so I'm pretty sure they would like to do it as good as possible. PS. de_dust? Nah! de_dust2 FTW!

I think it's under NDA. Iirc, then the Alpha tester can only say that they're in the Alpha but nothing more.

NDA, but hi der. Put your money on CBT before testers can possibly have the right to stream, in which case I'll be putting one up when it becomes allowed. If you can't wait, buy yourself some alpha access bros!

Don't act all special, you're not the only that bought the game. You also need to know a bit about the games industry and how a PUBLISHER (bethesda) can be the one most responsible for a game's crappy release (Brink's). For example, they rush out games to try and sell more copies before other bigger games come out even if the dev's will look bad in front of fans since they don't really have a choice. There was a WHOLE MAP without sound. Now do you think that's something that splash damage overlooked????? or do you think that was a publisher saying... hey here's the deadline, actually no we're releasing 7 days earlier! yeah! Now make magic and make the game you already didnt have time to finish, but 7 days earlier... and go! If you want to moan, that's fine... Don't buy anything and move along. You'll be able to join when the open alpha/beta starts and I'm sure you'll be there. See you soon on db.

One of the big differences between Brink and what they are trying to do here was that Brink was essentially a console game with PC as an afterthought. I for one am glad to see SD going back to their roots and making something specifically for PC and their loyal fans. Hate all you like dude Brink was what it was and no amount of whining about it now is going to change that.. I had as higher hopes for it as anyone. I have just as high a hopes for this and it's looking great. I would upgrade to the pack to get in to the Alpha if i wasn't in Oz. Any word on Alpha servers here? Long shot I know but worth asking... we have alot of quality players down under who could offer invaluable feedback.

Isn't it too early to assume this? Iirc Alpha and Beta games aren't available through steam anyway.

I guess alpha and beta games are on steam, like dota and some others. Anyway they got their own launcher and fireteam, and steam doesn't get mentioned in their trailers. I doubt that this game will be on steam.

It's a fair assumption, yes and you're probably right but I'd like to see it confirmed first ^^ I don't know much about Steam, but I thought they didn't distributed Alpha's and Beta's. (Think about the WarZ debacle which was basically beta software with unimplemented features) Dota also isn't the best example imo, because Valve directly supports its developpement.
Posted on 31 January, 2013 - 12:09
It can still be possible, but I doubt it. Yea, dota was not the best example, but R.U.S.E also had a beta on steam. http://store.steampowered.com/news/3574/ http://indiegamehq.com/airmech-to-land-in-open-beta-through-steam-on-november-8th/

At least this video will make me pay upfront... :P not too much ofc.
Posted on 31 January, 2013 - 13:57
I wasnt all that convinced by the first gameplay trailer but this one pretty much has me sold but damn, the minimum you can pay to get into the alpha just now is £70 Approx. Would be cool if there was an early access only package without all the other goodies 'cause they ain't really something I care for. I know theres the $30 one but that doesn't give you access now. Maybe something that was roughly £40-50 without the goodies but gave access now but that'd still be more than the average pc game and to play an alpha game thats going to be free to play eventually? seems a lot.
Posted on 31 January, 2013 - 14:02
Looking great guys cant wait to try it out, I'm moving to a different country in a few months so cant see me splashing the cash for the founders club :( Good to see some old faces here tho who I'm sure will give valuable feedback to the devs. Keep up the good work SD :)

Yes, but Dota was actually made by Valve. Look at Blacklight Retribution. It had its own launcher and was released in Steam, but it took a few months after the initial release.

The real question is who hasn't played the alpha? ;)
Posted on 1 February, 2013 - 23:09
Echo, looks great

Would the alpha play well for North American players? ie NA servers? Or is it being hosted out of UK?

There are both NA and EU test servers available in Alpha. I also think it wouldn't be too much of a leak to say that cross-continental play is really not a pressing issue. I play from the west coast of the USA on UK servers the majority of the time, and with absolutely zero latency frustration. It's quite impressive really.
Posted on 2 February, 2013 - 06:36
So how much do you have to pay to get into the Alpha right now? I know that I paid something some months ago, but I don't know if it was a guarantee for the Alpha. Edit: Okay, 120 is too much for an instant access right now, damn. Gonna wait.
Posted on 2 February, 2013 - 10:20
Just a friendly reminder that the alpha is NDA guarded.
Posted on 2 February, 2013 - 11:34
Any guess on how long the alpha will last?
Posted on 2 February, 2013 - 16:24
Yeah! I wanna know how long I have to wait with my 60 bucks spent!
Posted on 2 February, 2013 - 16:36
Yeah! I wanna know how long I have to wait with my 60 bucks spent!
You knew what you were paying for... ETA is not mentioned for some reason... Why are you so impatient? Wouldn't it be better to just let devs do their job as good as they can? I'm pretty sure more people will be involved to the tests as soon as SD feels it's needed.

How long did it take for the Legendary players to get activated after buying the product?

Just my wild guess:
Posted on 2 February, 2013 - 17:07
How long did it take for the Legendary players to get activated after buying the product?
From what I gather anyone who bought in at Legendary got access to the Alpha as soon as it was launched (key sent same day, excluding some technical issues). Reading the other levels the only thing you are guaranteed is access to the closed beta one month before they do an open beta. That of course would assume that they have so many Legendary and up purchases that they don't need to dip into the other tiers earlier. To be honest, and this is MY opinion. SD would be well aware of how eager people who've paid are to play the game. Unless there is a practical reason why they couldn't, I'd expect them to let people in as soon as they can.
Posted on 2 February, 2013 - 17:08
Instant access means instant to me which has not happened yet ;) Edit: I mean, I bought Legendary 20 minutes ago, so no big deal, but per definition that is not instant access. I already redeemed the key but cannot log in.

If you have your key I would have thought you'd be done. what are you waiting on?

Lol, just tried that and wasn't able to log in again.. had to change my password. @SockDog: I was not able to log in after activating my key. It now works after changing my password, good stuff ^^ Edit: It is of course entirely possible that the password Chrome stored was an old one, but it should update normally. Whatever, it works now, 5 minutes remaining (dl).

The login stuff is a little weird as you have to make sure you log out of the Warchest site not these forums otherwise it doesn't work very well. Anyway. You're in now so enjoy. :)

How i can join the close alpha?
Posted on 6 February, 2013 - 17:37
You must partake in an arduous journey when you must re-unite the four sages who guard each of the respective elements (Earth, Wind, Fire and Water). Once you have re-united these sages, you will then face your dopplegänger in a fight to the death in the arena of time. Only once you emerge from the arena of time as a victor (and have bought either the Veteran, Elite, Legendary, Contributor or Founder's pack) will you have a priority chance to get into the closed alpha.

Well hello thar! :D Unfortunately, due to craptastic levels of work and stress, I haven't been able to play DB for some time. I'm patching now, in the hope that I can squeeze in some play time ASAP :) Really glad to see this news, and the resulting indication of progress while I've been AWOL. I notice you guys have some kind of payment/pledge system going now, so I'll check that out - happy to stump up right now and support this new baby of yours :)
Tell that to the players that pre-ordered BRINK and who continue to regret it to this day. If it wasn't for idiots like me who bought into the hype and put their faith in the developer of Enemy Territory, this project wouldn't even exist.
Come on, you're being silly now :) We've all been in your position. Many of us pre-ordered, or bought Brink - same difference. I wasn't that happy, and most of my complaints were never addressed - but I played the game for a while, and I've bought other games that I've played far less and quickly regretted buying. Brink wasn't expensive, and I doubt you missed any meals so you could buy it. This was a couple of years ago now, for FSM's sake - how can you still "regret" spending that amount of money so long ago? SD have been sufficiently slammed for Brink by many people, me included - it's in the past for me, and for SD, and it should be for you too. When I got that email that invited me to the very first DB tests, I sent a reply back to Paul/Locki and thanked him for the invite - mentioning that I wasn't the biggest Brink fan, and that I'd made plenty of negative comments about it. Paul replied, saying he didn't care about that in the slightest, and that he just wanted me testing SD's new baby. How can you possibly hold a long-standing grudge against such genuine and obviously nice people? "Hey, you didn't like our last game and you certainly let everyone know, but try this completely unfinished one for free". Brink didn't turn out how SD wanted it to either, and they found themselves bound by Bethesda and their stupid rigid structures and rules. Now there's no Bethesda, no Activision - this is going to be SD's game, on SD's terms - and right now you have absolutely no reason to mark this brand new project as crap. Absolutely no reason at all. Honestly, I'm sure you're enjoying the fact that people are still replying to your 100% negative posts - sometimes, that feels good when your complaints are still fresh and you feel something can be done about them. So long after release, no amount of complaining is going to improve Brink - it's gone, and pretty much everyone has moved on. You should do too :) I haven't played DB for a couple of months now, but it was damn good fun when I did - give it a chance at least, eh? It's the rational thing to do.
