Brink Dedicated Server FAQ is Here

We've had a lot of questions about the dedicated servers for the PC version of Brink lately, so we've thrown together answers to the most common questions out there. The big news is that the dedicated server files will be freely available, so anyone will be able to put up servers for Brink.

Before we dive into the rest of the stuff, as noted over on Bethblog, we're also working to ensure you'll be able to pre-load Brink on Steam prior to release. We'll let you know once we have more information in regards to timeframes and such.

And now, on to the questions:

Latest Brink Video Gets SMART About General Gameplay

Part 3 of the Get SMART series of Brink videos is here and covers all the bases that make up general gameplay. You'll be finding out about player movement, incapacitation, buffs, and deployables, and will also get some basic combat pointers.

Happy World Tapir Day 2011

We love tapirs here at Splash Damage and have done so ever since they helped us with that thing with the guy at the place. Today is World Tapir Day, which is not only our favorite day of the year, but also raises awareness of the plight of tapirs around the world. Despite their immense snuffling skills, all of the tapir species are currently endangered, with the Mountain Tapir facing extinction within the next 20 years if things don't change. Here's how you can get involved.

Several zoos around the globe are hosting special events to celebrate World Tapir Day and its titular beasts, ranging from Adelaide Zoo's Breakfast With The Tapirs to being able to get up close and personal with Belfast Zoo's odd-toed inhabitants. For a complete list of this year's happenings, head on over to World Tapir Day's official Facebook page.

If you're feeling charitable, please consider making a donation to the World Land Trust, which is once again this year's beneficiary of tapir-based fund-raising efforts around the world. Based in the UK, the World Land Trust is dedicated to preserving endangered species and their habitats, and has so far purchased over 400,000 acres of threatened lands around the world.

Get SMART with Brink's Objectives

We've got another video from Brink's Get SMART series for you today and it's all about Objectives. Brink's objective wheel is covered in this one, as are the intricacies of the main objective types in the game.

Brink Coverage: Of Ending Genres, Sound Design and More

Another week, another exciting Brink coverage round-up. First up is GamaSutra, where Dennis Scimeca dives head-first into Brink's innards in a piece titled A Missive From the End of Genre. Guided along by Brink's Creative Director Richard Ham, Dennis examines how Brink blurs the lines between single player and multiplayer gaming, with additional insights from Irrational Games' Ken Levine and Kaos Studios' Rex Dickson.

Meanwhile, The USA Today sent out its Game Hunters to unearth Five Things You Didn't Know About Brink. Here's a taster from those:

Violent vocalizations. To make Brink's weapons sound even more punchy and powerful, Audio Director Chris Sweetman incorporated some unusual components into their firing sounds, including animal noises, a woman screaming, and even his own voice.

Speaking of Mr Sweetman, Splash Damage's Audio Director extraordinary also makes an appearance over at Edge Online in a feature titled How Sound Influences the Way We Play. Chris reveals some of the audio challenges posed by Brink's multiplayer nature, while audio folk from other studios share their perspective on the subject as well.

But wait, there's more! Keep reading for the very latest Brink interviews and previews, summarised in the neat and tidy way only bulleted lists can give us.

Get SMART With New Brink Video

The Brink action kicks off on Saturday at 4 PM and will run for three hours, allowing you to get some play time in before the game is officially released on May 13. Press Event Deploys New Brink Interviews & Footage

Last week, Bethesda brought their current line-up of unreleased titles to snowy Utah, letting journalists from all over the world get their eyes and/or hands on it. Brink was part of the show, with its cooperative and competitive multiplayer on display (including a friendly tournament!), and we had several members of the team out there to answer questions, as well. Coverage from the event has now begun hitting the internet and brings with it a slew of new gameplay footage and screenshots. Be sure to watch to keep an eye out for those while perusing the features below:

Play Brink at the European Community Showdown

What better way to celebrate the upcoming launch of Brink that by inviting a bunch of websites down to your offices and having them face off against each other? That's exactly what the folks at Bethesda UK were thinking and so we'll be having a Epic European/Australian Website Throwdown of Death (actual name still to be decided) right here at the Splash Damage offices in early May.

Better yet, you will be able to join in on the action as each of the invited sites will be bringing three members of their respective communities to aid them in their quest for virtual world domination. The winning team will receive either an Xbox 360 or a PlayStation 3 along with a copy of Brink for each of its fearless warriors.

What We're Playing: Hello Spring Edition

Spring's most definitely arrived and even though we're getting more than averagely nice weather here in England, it's not stopping us playing games. Despite that alluring New Game Smell being spread by all manner of great titles in recent weeks, it's Enemy Territory: QUAKE Wars that has featured in our lunchtime gaming sessions recently, joining regular fixtures Magicka and Mount & Blade: Warband. Magic, swords, guns, and aliens from outer space - we're pretty sure we've got the entire range covered there.

But that's not all! Find out what other games we've been checking out lately by venturing deeper into this latest edition of What We're Playing. Oh, and as always, don't forget to let us know what you have been playing in the comments. And begin:

Edge Online Looks at Balancing Brink

If you've ever wondered just how much thinking and effort goes into balancing a multiplayer game like Brink, the folks over at Edge Online have you covered with a fascinating new interview. Aptly titled Balancing Brink, it has Creative Director Richard 'Rahdo' Ham and Lead Designer Neil 'Exedore' Alphonso shed a lot of light on what we've done to fine-tune Brink's many weapons, levels, and abilities, as well as some of the things we'll be able to do once the game is released. Here's a slice:

We've inherited this very sophisticated system from Quake Wars that allows us to tweak individual things from day one. One term we use that's extremely important to the game is 'netvars', text files of values that we can change locally, upload to a server and then it gets automatically dispersed through the world.

Head on over to Edge Online for the information-packed rest!

Brink PC Gets Steamworks, System Requirements

With Brink now a mere four weeks away, we've got a few new bits of information to share about the PC version today. First up, we can confirm that Brink will be making full use of Valve's Steamworks framework, which will provide a host of useful things for PC players, including the following:

  • Voice Chat
  • Valve Anti Cheat
  • Friends support (including invites and joining sessions in progress)
  • Steam Cloud (for save data)
  • Challenge Leaderboards
  • Steam Achievements

This also means that you'll be able to plug your product key straight into Steam and download Brink no matter where you are in the world - no disc required. Of course, you'll also be getting any new game updates automatically upon signing into your account, and you'll have access to things like the Steam Community.

But wait, there's more! We've had a lot of questions about the system requirements for the game in recent weeks and we've got those for you today, as well.

Breaking: Brink Releasing a Week Early!

We're very excited to announce that Brink's release date is moving up a whole week - the game is now set to be released on May 10 in the US, and May 13 in Europe and Australia. What's the occasion? Well, let's have the press release do the talking, shall we?

"Production wrapped on Brink earlier than we planned and we didn't see any reason to keep gamers from getting their hands on this highly anticipated game as soon as it was ready," said Pete Hines, VP of PR and Marketing for Bethesda Softworks. "It's apparent from the tremendous reaction so far that people are eager to jump online and play, and if we can make that happen earlier – we're going to."

Great stuff! Check out the full press release here.
