Currently Hurling Controllers/Mice At... (Space) Aliens, Predators, & Splicers
Welcome to the latest installment of Currently Hurling, our semi-regular look at the games we've been playing here at Splash Damage. 2010 has been a spectacular year for games so far and with great new releases continuing to appear on almost a weekly basis, there's no sign of that changing any time soon.
Among at least several other things, this edition features Crispy flailing about in the dark, Mikkel being trapped in his dosbox, and Locki practicing all-female intergalactic warfare. Just another day at the office, really.
Let's dive right in: Continue reading »
Currently Hurling Controllers/Mice At... Space, Pew Pew, and Shotgun Heels
Here it is, the latest installment of our regular look at what games we've been playing here at Splash Damage. Somewhat predicably, Mass Effect 2 is the talk of the town/office this week, and it's garning high praise all around.
Less predictably, the other big gaming story this week is after extensive and no doubt harrowing training sessions, our IT magicians Ben 'Randles' Hopkinson and Joe 'Rex-theGrunt' Gibson at long last stand victoriously at the very top of Pixeljunk Shooter (right). Or more specifically, the leaderboard for the first stage of episode 1 after somehow squeezing 311,500 points out of the thing. Watching them play is a bit like watching two brain surgeons go about their business simultaneously - it's all very precise, meticulously coordinated, and probably supremely confusing to onlookers. Our metaphorical hats are off to them.
Now, Mass Effect 2 isn't the only thing in our trays, of course. Read to see what else we managed to get our thumbs on: Continue reading »
What We Played: Splash Damage's Games of the Year
What better way to ring in a whole new year than by picking out our favorite games of 2009? Last year brought us some fantastic gaming experiences, with both sequels and original titles delivering The Fun in serious quantities. With so many games, we put it to our team to select up to three of their favorite games of 2009 and share them with all of you.
We also have two new faces joining our gamer line-up this week, with effects guru Farhan 'middlecat' Qureshi and Production Tester Chris 'captainjonesy' Jones proving that they have keyboards and are not afraid to use them.
And the winner(s) is/are... Continue reading »
Currently Hurling Controllers / Mice At ... Assassins and Creeds
Welcome to another edition of Currently Hurling, our semi-regular look at what games we've been playing here at Splash Damage and what we're looking forward to. 2009 is slowly but surely coming to a close but it's going out in style with a huge crop of awesome games across all platforms. With Assassin's Creed 2 now out there, we get to enjoy a few weeks of quiet before things heat up again in January. This works out as it'll actually give us time to actually spend time with all the great games that appeared in the past few weeks.
Anywho, in this edition, Philip is all about osmosis, Ed breaks up with his Rogue, and Tim spends a lovely weekend with the Ghostbusters. Oh, and as the title might imply, there's a fair bit of hidden blade action. Continue reading »
Currently Hurling Controllers / Mice At ... Uncharted Dragon Warfare
Welcome to the latest edition of Currently Hurling, our semi-regular look at what the Splash Damage guys and girls are playing. The holiday onslaught continues, with both Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 and Dragon Age: Origins being among the latest wallet-draining reinforcements. Left 4 Dead 2, New Super Mario Bros Wii and Assassin's Creed 2 are all set to join the retail fray this week, which will slowly bring to a close the year's most frantic season of new game releases.
Hidden somewhat in this installment are dragons, high powered assault rifles, likable thieves, several waves of zombies, a copious amount of rock, and at least one art director wielding a turntable. Enter at your own risk. Continue reading »
Currently Hurling Controllers / Mice At ... Borders and Lands
Quick, grab your eyeballs and get ready for the latest installment of Currently Hurling, our semi-regular look at what games we're playing here at Splash Damage. If you like games and water-based metaphors, you'll be happy to know that it's now high tide for new releases, and Borderlands, Forza Motorsport 3, Torchlight, GTA4: The Ballad of Gay Tony are more than happy to prove the point. Dragon Age, Modern Warfare 2, Assassin's Creed 2, Left 4 Dead 2 and New Super Mario Bros Wii will all be here before month's end, so there's very little prospective rest for thumbs everywhere.
In more immediate news, Art Director Olivier 'nosebone' Leonardi is joining the Controllers/Mice crowd for the first time ever this week - please make him feel welcome. Also, if you're a fan of 87 bazillion guns, this update should leave you fairly satisfied. Words: Continue reading »
Currently Hurling Controllers / Mice At ... Rocktober, Baby
Make way for the latest installment of Currently Hurling, our semi-regular look at what games we're playing here at Splash Damage. October's always a great time for new games and this one so far hasn't disappointed in the slightest. The hilarious Brütal Legend and the superb Uncharted 2: Among Thieves just finished falling into our collective laps and with Forza Motorsport 3 and Borderlands, the next batch of concentrated fun is already waiting. More hours in the day or, failing that, five day weekends are clearly required.
In this installment, Richard Ham Wii-zaps, Jamie makes a horrible pun, and Ronald uses the Rube Goldberg approach to take out enemies in Batman. All the gory details can be found below: Continue reading »
Currently Hurling Controllers/Mice At... Space Marines, Footballers, and Bats
Here's the latest edition of Currently Hurling, our semi-regular look at what games we're playing here at Splash Damage. The Beatles: Rock Band, Left 4 Dead, and FIFA continue to be regular fixtures in our gaming area at the office, cunningly mixing the zombie apocalypse with sliding tackles and four-player harmonies. In more forward-looking matters, we're now ankle-deep in October, which is set to bury us in a considerable pile of great new titles, like Brütal Legend, Uncharted 2, Forza 3, Borderlands and so many more. It's definitely a good time to be a gamer.
But clumsily circling back to the here and now, let's have a peek at what we've been playing. Incidentally, we've got two new faces in this update, with Production Testers Aidan 'UdP' Price and Philip 'pipster' Barnell contributing words for the first time. Hello and welcome, chaps! And now, games: Continue reading »
Currently Hurling Mice/Controllers at... Well, Mainly Batman: Arkham Asylum
Welcome to the latest installment of Currently Hurling, our semi-regular look at what we here at Splash Damage have been playing lately. The traditionally slow Summer period seems to be officially over, thanks to a swift kick in the face courtesy of Batman: Arkham Asylum. The Caped Crusader is backed up by several of his closest peers, including Shadow Complex, DiRT 2, The Beatles: Rockband, Wolfenstein and many others, all fighting the good fight and making sure our thumbs get the workout they deserve.
In this installment, Batman gets lots of love all around, the Dawn of War II office tournament gets underway, and Rahdo obsesses over a board game. This and more after the break. Continue reading »
Currently Hurling Mice/Controllers at... 2.5D?
Hello and welcome to the latest installment of Currently Hurling, our semi-regular look at what games we've been playing here at Splash Damage. In this installment, Aubrey makes people cry on the internet, Ed gets to live out his spider fantasies, and Jamie 'splodes all over everything. We also have a new face this week with Illustrator/Media Artist Jeremy 'pinflux' Hay hurling things for the very first time. Be nice, he wears goggles on his forehead.
Jeremy 'pinflux' Hay (Illustrator/Media Artist):
Braid. You’ve probably already finished it or at least had a friend scream its praises at you, so I won’t go into detail. Suffice to say that it’s proof enough that a solid, unique concept doesn’t need to be backed by a multi-million dollar developer to become a brilliant (and profitable) game. Having beautiful 2D graphics and a thought-provoking storyline to boot is what truly propels it into must-own status, though. Continue reading »
