Update on Brink DLC, Title Updates, and New Screenshots

Update: To clear up any potential confusion, you will be able to download the Agents of Change DLC pack for free for two weeks after it's released. If you grab it during that time, you'll permanently own the content and are able to re-download it in the future at no charge.

Original story: We're back with new details on Brink DLC and the upcoming title updates for the game.

The game's first DLC, Agents of Change, will be FREE for two weeks on Xbox LIVE, PSN, and Steam! The content is currently in submission at Microsoft and Sony, and we expect it to release in early July. As previously mentioned, the DLC features two all-new environments, five new player abilities, two new outfits, and two new weapon attachments. You can find more details in this post, and be sure to check out the screenshots above.

In tandem with the DLC, the teams at Splash Damage and Bethesda have been hard at work on the next major title update for Brink. The update is highlighted by online optimizations, AI enhancements, and weapon balance tweaks based on player feedback. As noted yesterday, a separate, incremental update is now available on PC, while players of the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 version of Brink can expect the full title update alongside the release of Agents of Change.

On behalf of everyone at Bethesda and Splash Damage, we want to thank all of you for your continued support of Brink. We'll be sharing more information as soon as possible.

Yay! Thanks Badman, sorry you weren't the first to post a screenshot :D

w000000p! :) :stroggtapir: approves.

Free for two weeks ?\
This so we have to buy it after two weeks? or if you don't pick it up in the two weeks you have to pay for it?
Posted on 24 June, 2011 - 15:38
Are they changing the HUD? Or is that just the way it looks on PC? They are also showing amounts on the abilities... i'm confused, time to read!
Posted on 24 June, 2011 - 15:38
Been waiting for media since you guys detailed the DLC. Thank you kindly!
Are they changing the HUD? Or is that just the way it looks on PC?\
PC. Regards, Nexo

That suggests yes, anyone that doesnt grab it within the 2 weeks will need to pay for it after that period

Yeah that's the normal PC HUD.

Booyea!!!!!
Posted on 24 June, 2011 - 15:40
Great only free for two weeks (although better then nothing) AND it comes out in "early" July which apparently is part of June?
Posted on 24 June, 2011 - 15:40
what the size of the 2 maps ? little indoor maps ?
Posted on 24 June, 2011 - 15:41
O god this is not going to go over well. They are changing the story and now only making it free for 2 weeks. If you meant free for those who download it within the first two weeks then anyone who downloads after that will have to pay then you better clear it up or prepare for a hate train like you have never seen before.
Posted on 24 June, 2011 - 15:41
free for 2 weeks ..... turn it to free to pay !!!! who gonna pay the DLC if there is no players anymore ? 50 box a half game and now we need to pay again ?
Posted on 24 June, 2011 - 15:42
Looks very good. I love what I'm seeing of the level design, the transparent fire grenade and the weapon shield. Can't wait!
Posted on 24 June, 2011 - 15:43
All I can say is that DLC better come with a huge patch otherwise you wont get anyone purchasing that DLC when the two weeks are up. -Fixed spawn timers on defense - To avoid full holds etc -Demos -First person spec -Alter some of the choke points on a number of maps so they are playable for competition. -Changeable cross hair Long shot request, SDK if your not able to patch the above things in at least give the community the opportunity to do it themselves in a mod.

It isn't that strange though (if it keeps working for people who downloaded it for free), existing customers are getting it for free because of the shoddy launch, new customers won't have suffered through that so they don't get the DLC for free either.
Posted on 24 June, 2011 - 15:44
I wonder, is the PC release being held back to wait for the MS/Sony approval so we all get it at the same time? Obviously I'd rather the PC just got it if its ready.
Posted on 24 June, 2011 - 15:44
Clarification of "Free for 2 weeks" would be appreciated Does this apply only to consoles or to consoles and STEAM? Free for 2 weeks and then you need to pay? Free for 2 weeks. Any d/l after that (new BRINK players) will require payment? TIA
Posted on 24 June, 2011 - 15:45
That suggests yes, anyone that doesnt grab it within the 2 weeks will need to pay for it after that period .\
That doesn't seem so nice :( . FREE DLC is expected to be FREE forever and not for like two weeks. Sorry to say this : Cashing out on the last few folks who are playing this game and doesnt get to update within these times ?
Posted on 24 June, 2011 - 15:45
The game really does look amazing, graphicly, on PC doesn't it? Too bad we at 360 got the blur lol.
Posted on 24 June, 2011 - 15:46
nice. i hope brink will live longer with this..... ..... and hopefully the update makes it more a pc-game.
Posted on 24 June, 2011 - 15:52
Don't be fooled it does not look that perfect on PC when maxed out. I suspect some tweaking of certain inaccessible settings have been used or some Photoshop touch ups.
Posted on 24 June, 2011 - 15:54
Free for 2 weeks what a FAIL !!!
Posted on 24 June, 2011 - 15:55
Yeah you may be right, still I can dream :)
Posted on 24 June, 2011 - 15:55
Sweet! I'll be getting this right away! The new weapon attachments and abilities sound like they'll bring a whole lot of new elements to the game play.
Posted on 24 June, 2011 - 15:56

I would like to see the game play videos of these maps on the the minimum requirements from SD.

The update is not released and won't be till mid July.
Posted on 24 June, 2011 - 15:56
what the size of the 2 maps ? little indoor maps ?\
I'd say they both trend towards large; Founder's Tower is I think the biggest map in the game.
Posted on 24 June, 2011 - 15:57
that shield thing on screenshot 3+4 is not serious is it? so, when this got buffed i run around with it like its on the shots? that huge.... thing? *facepalm* oh, and plz some clearification on this "free for 2 weeks". free for download in the first 2 weeks and keep it for free? free to play for 2 weeks, after this, pay?
Posted on 24 June, 2011 - 16:08
I'm speculating here, but i cant imagine that anyone who downloaded the DLC in the 2 week window would have to pay at the end of the window, mainly because of the mechanism of DLC distro. For you non-knuckle-draggers who throw up a little in your mouth when you think about playing on a console, the way PSN store works is once you've bought something on the store, you can re-download anything again (for free) anytime in the near future. no idea how 360/xbl works Unless they treat the DLC as a timed demo (not sure how this would work for a map pack) i just dont see how it would work other than to let us keep it for good...nor why they would do it this way. (i've been wrong many times before, and will be again, so whatever.)

For anyone confused, "free for two weeks" means that the content will be AVAILABLE FOR DOWNLOAD free for two weeks. After the twos weeks are done, anyone else wishing to download it will have to pay for it. It's not going to be "rental" DLC that you have to pay for after the two weeks are done. That doesn't even make any damn sense. SD might not be the sharpest knives in the drawer, but making DLC free for two weeks, then making your users have to pay for it after said time period would cause a mass exodus from the game so extreme that they'd go belly-up faster the Realtime Realms and Kaos Studios did. In summary: Anyone who picks up the DLC within the 1st two weeks gets it free. Anyone who picks it up after will have to pay for it. Simple.

haha - cross post - same idea, different execution. an unrelated point, what's the middle ability (4 key) in this picture? http://www.splashdamage.com/screens_brink/dlc03.jpg is this the icon for the new mine? (next to the regular mine, does that mean we get an additional mine? speculate away)

Agreed. Either way TF2 is drawing more in with the F2P. (started playing it only yesterday )

Great idea. Have new players come in after those two weeks and be pissed off because they keep getting kicked from games or are getting dominated because they are not spending the money to get new Skills. This is a complete pile of fail. Imagine in the future when they charge for the DLC's and this game turns into a PAY 2 WIN situation.

Looks like the Pyro Mine they announced in the BethBlog on 05/29. /nod

I'm not confused but I'm already fielding question from our community , hence the request for clarification. New maps alone are going to make the DLC fairly mandatory so players won't be dropped from servers on map change.

I think the reason they put a timer before it becomes paid is not only for more money but also for kind of an incentive to look at Brink again (temporal free? better look now!) and discover a game with alot less issues.

In the original announcement I felt like they made it clear that it was only free to make up for the problems at launch. Therefore, any player that played at launch should already have the title and be able to get the DLC within the two week limit. Any other players purchasing the game later down the line have no need to receive a free DLC to make up for problems at launch and it sounds like they will therefore have to pay for it. This makes sense to me because anyone purchasing the title later on was not impacted by the problems that we were as adopters at launch. I actually like that they are rewarding the people that purchased on launch day and stuck around through all the problems (or at least planned to give the game a 2nd chance with the DLC). To a certain extent it's like a restaurant: they screw up your meal and you get it for free. But if you had a perfectly good meal there would be no reason for the restaurant to give anything away to you. Would it be great if they just gave it away for free forever? Maybe, but I definitely don't like going to work and not getting paid for my efforts.

yeah i know - sorry, my post didn't make that clear - but there was a question as to whether it would replace the existing mine or supplement the arsenal. I guess we have the answer (supplement)

^^^This. It's marketing people. Anyone who doesn't realize this obviously aren't to savvy when it comes to corporate affairs. I have a bachelor's in business management, but it doesn't take a degree to figure out that what Seiniyta said is their intention. All of the existing player base (however many of us there still is) will get the content within the 1st two weeks obviously. And anyone who buys the game after the two week period at the new price point of $40 (That's what Gamestop is selling it at now) will have to most likely pay $9.99 for the new content. In essence, those of us who bought the game at $60 will have the opportunity to get the DLC free right off the jump, as will anyone else buying the game now at $40 within the two weeks it's 1st made available. After that, they slap a price tag on and anyone new after those two weeks will have to pay for it. It's a smart plan actually, but truth be told I doubt they'll make much coin off of it. Let's face it, Brink's not pulling in a big player base. I mean don't get me wrong, I personally love the game. And I am seeing a lot more players online on PS3 within the last two weeks. But the community as it is now is about as big as it's ever going to be. So making the new content free initially to appease those of us who have endured and enjoyable, but obviously incomplete game is a good move to keep the people still playing happy, but I doubt it'll attract many new players into to fold.

Yes, it's the Pyro Mine, and yes, you do get an additional mine (unaffected by regular Landmine with or without Extra Landmine).

Am I the only one smelling the struggle beetween SD and bethesda about the "free for 2 weeks" stuff? SD : "Cmon guyz we allways made dlc for free, it's our roots and we want it this way" Beth : "Tsss Tsss we allways charge for DLC you foolish hippies!" SD : "Meh! what about one month free then?" Beth : "one week!" SD : "2!" Beth : "Deal!" I may be dreaming awake, but it sounds like a decent theory... Peace

Actually this crossed my mind too. I was also under the impression that Microsoft didn't like free DLC either. Could also be the reason for the long news hiatus? Regards, Nexo
Posted on 24 June, 2011 - 16:45
they wont release sdk soon at least untill they don't sell all their dlc i REALIZED THAT they dont care if people appreciate the game they only care to exploit people and sell If you dont play it cause it 's full of bugs not important... Quantity insthead quality dlc= money sdk = custom maps and mods= NO MONEY FOR THEM They are ONLY workin for THEMSELVES and we are COWS TO MILK you know where you can put your dlc? ;)
Posted on 24 June, 2011 - 16:47
If this helps more DLC release I'm all for it. If the money goes straight to bethsoft then that makes me sick. badman can we get clarification for two weeks? If I download it free does it stay free? Because if you can download it free but then you have to pay later. Everyone's just going to be even more pissed off.

Jess, this is what I got as a reply . "yes, if you don't purchase it in the first two weeks, you have to pay for it"

That's better then a time limit. For sure.

I think this has to do with xbox live. Microsoft prevents free updates or dlcs above a certain point in size to be released. Thats why the dlc for left 4 dead 1 and 2 were free on PC and they charged for it on xbox live. I dont see how they could release it on live for free. Thats just microsoft policy. The pc on the other hand may be free or they charge money for it.

Fixed invisible players sometimes (dis)appearing So now the invisible players are appearing?
Posted on 24 June, 2011 - 17:04
They just should make Brink vannilla free with paid dlc for the free users + less customanization you'll have to purchase
Posted on 24 June, 2011 - 17:05
Assumes DLC will be playtested and the free two weeks aren't another Beta.
Posted on 24 June, 2011 - 17:05
Ok, so did i understand right? If i update my Brink in 2 weeks i will get DLC for free, but if i update my Brink after 2 weeks i have to pay for DLC? I don't know. Sounds weird.

Sounds weird for me aswell, I thought that Steam (PC) will remove the DLC after 2 weeks? Same idea as a demo.

The game's first DLC, Agents of Change, will be FREE for two weeks on Xbox LIVE, PSN, and Steam! \
blinded by greed, nice job showing your true colours here splashdamage, you wont be getting my money ever again after this stunt, saying the first DLC would be free for everyone, sure just did a 180 on that... lets not mention all the promises you made pre-release at all the gaming conventions and in interviews with gaming websites
The content is currently in submission at Microsoft and Sony, and we expect it to release in early July really... sure is June in here

Really, the small niche competition requests will stop pubbers buying it?!?! no. I think not sir, but nice try trying to strong arm SD. Those are not key to "fun public games", full holds in "home maps" make sense, and when you play with friends and for fun not e-peen you don't really worry about hackers etc. And the choke points are being addressed by these choke point busting new abilities. Napalm, and nade buffs. Plus the netvar tweeks that are now possible since todays patch. So it will all come good, SD are on our side, they are gamers too!! :stroggtapir:

yeah and they made them push out a title that wasnt even ready for release a week early, asif to tout 'the game is finished so we are releasing it a week early', with the only patch on release day being the 'better steam error reporting' one... and not to mention the fact that Bethesda's QA dept missed all the nvidia and ATi performance/issues entirely? not to mention the blaring bugs with the game... and you call yourselves Triple A gaming designers they have to retain some common sense, even if they just want their money
Posted on 24 June, 2011 - 17:26

That is just stupid if it's true. Does that mean there won't be any more bugs in two weeks? It makes me wonder what about the game exactly makes SD think that the first DLC should be free for only two weeks. Was it only sort of crappy on release? Not bug ridden enough to warrant an actually free DLC only a temporarily free one? It makes no sense. Next they'll be telling me I'll soon be able to buy Hellgate in North America even though I already bought two lifetime accounts four years ago. Oh wait... -JJ

I just spotted this, hopefully someone posts between me replying. But it is free to all existing BRINK players who have endured the slightly rough few weeks and all purchasers thereafter for 2 weeks. So will you find it difficult to download it within 2 weeks?! Or do you just misunderstand, it is NOT after 2 weeks of playing you then have to purchase to KEEP it. It is more that those who purchase it after 2 weeks will be new purchasers and so therefore do not get the “apology” DLC free as they did not endure anything to require recompense for! So chin up lad! :)

doesnt matter, they've said numerous times the first DLC would be free, for everyone not just people who've bought the game before a specific date... attempting to drum up more sales of a game that still isnt working as it is supposed to be isnt exactly a nice move for the community not to mention the clear lack of information they have been releasing regarding known issues aswell, atleast with ET there was a thread on the forums with 'known issues' and 'issues being worked on' so atleast the community at large had a good idea of what was going on.. even if it wasnt specific

you're kidding right? the game's a joke, the maps are terrible and the spread is horrid and we can't forget about all the locked command bull**** - oh yeah! how well this game is played on ATI also sure tells us splash damage aren't retarded at all. lets just push a potentially decent game to release early while also hyping this bad boy.. incredibly massive let down - I can't deny I enjoyed it for the first couple days(yey decent nvidia vidcarded rig[120fps]), pity the maps are terribly designed and are too few to keep most entertained long enough. good bug ridden horrid release. game's dead. sd are bad. l8r bads:stroggbanana:

maybe with the screenshots they implicate the new, super uber advanced gui costumization instroduced with the new dlc?

I wouldn't know how they would otherwise be able to reconcile the cognitive dissonance between pushing this orange console crap on the pc while advertising the graphics without.

In the last screen shot the player you can see is wearing the outfit seen in very early interviews with the "leather-ish" look gaunlets and armor and the bandalero. It this the "punk" outfit?

Yeah.. and no. the small niche of competition requests? you joking? small.. even ET for a free game was released in a far better state(just) at its time of release than Brink was, not to mention the maps are horribly designed and extremely choke orientated, which even for pub is terrible, and makes attacking maps like first phase terminal in a comp setting almost impossible considering the amount of grenades a team of 5 can have at any given time. ill ignore your statement about playing with friends... i also dont understand what the hell you are on about with the 'dont really worry about hackers' statement either, considering i myself havent seen a single cheater since ive been playing the game? as for you talking about choke points... even though i partially addressed that in my first paragraph i dont see how you have played against a team of even remotely decent players... you are welcome to grab 5 of your friends against 5 of mine and we can see if you can get past first phase terminal, before and after the DLC LOL
So it will all come good, SD are on our side, they are gamers too!! :stroggtapir: if that were true they would of played their game on something other than console... lol edit: the other thing is considering how small most of the maps are.. how is the performance so atrocious?

How much maps had W:ET at launch? barely anything, nobody liked the original W:ET, it's mods like Jaymod and the likes which made the game really popular. It were the custom maps. And chokes? W:ET WERE FULL OF THEM. Every single map in W:ET was one huge choke fest. However, the reason why it worked there was because those chokes werent as much an issue due that you could get killed really fast if you had a good aim and you could push through.

Hahaha, hey splash damage, there is a reason you guys are averaging ~150 players at prime time in America, and guess what, it's not because we don't have a shield and new skins. ****ing morons, you should all be fired.

Ah well, environmental wise I would love to have seen an outside map during daylight next to the sea or something..

They don't show the player hues though. For a very good reason.\
Are you referring to the red hue that enemies have? Because they do have the hue in those screenshots too (though its more accurate to say it's like red lighting), I just compared with some of my screenshots. I'm personally more curious about the outfit of the enemy in the last screenshot, since those seem like goggles on top of his head and if so I think they are not a current item, and I'm not sure about the shirt.

Is the PC stat site going up with this DLC update as well? seriously the "more info soon" tag is getting old, what's the dealio?

prolly wont be attainable by players, not to mention the 'clean' look is prolly due to some custom graphical settings + some photoshop thrown in for good measure

The beauty of DLC? You don't even have to own the game it applies to, to download it.

What about DLC and regional restrictions?

I wouldn't know how they would otherwise be able to reconcile the cognitive dissonance between pushing this orange console crap on the pc while advertising the graphics without.\
do you still mean the halos around enemy players? you can disable them clientside... g_enemyTintEnabled 0

How are they stealing your money again? You already have the game so you get the DLC for free. Unless you choose not to download it in the first 2 weeks.
Posted on 24 June, 2011 - 18:35
I am thinking they mean if you download within 2 weeks you get it free to keep, otherwise you would have to pay. Still this could mean that after 2 weeks you need to pay even if you have already downloaded it - although it seems unlikely to me. Well whatever the case the title update and DLC will give me another chance to play hopefully without constant lags and with human opponents!

Wouldn't mind some clarification on whether the unavailability of Brink on Steam in the UK will affect the availability of the DLC to those UK purchasers who bought on Steam 'before the lock'. Would be infuriating if we were prevented from downloading during the free 2-week period.
Posted on 24 June, 2011 - 18:38
doesnt matter, they've said numerous times the first DLC would be free, for everyone not just people who've bought the game before a specific date... attempting to drum up more sales of a game that still isnt working as it is supposed to be isnt exactly a nice move for the community not to mention the clear lack of information they have been releasing regarding known issues aswell, atleast with ET there was a thread on the forums with 'known issues' and 'issues being worked on' so atleast the community at large had a good idea of what was going on.. even if it wasnt specific\
Actually they said that the DLC would be free specifically to make up for the problems at launch. They never said free forever or to everyone in perpetuity. If you didn't have the game at launch and therefore suffered from none of the problems at launch why should you get anything for free? Oh yeah you shouldn't.

Allow me to be blunt. No. Listen SD I loved ETQW and played it non-stop for two years. But this ****storm with Brink isn't impressive. You know how many hours I've sunk into Brink? 80. That's it. Only 80. I estimate I'd already played 150+ hours with ETQW in the same time frame. You know how many all nights sessions I've pulled with Brink? NONE. I played my first all night session with ETQW on my 3rd day. I stumbled onto an American and dined out till 6am in the ****ing morning. Hell none of my clan friends are playing this any more. The only ones playing it are those who are playing it in ESL. Apart from that it's already dead in the clan. I get the feeling (along with others) that this isn't true SD spirit. I feel that Bethesda are the ones in real control. Fix this **** already.

Since SD is going to eventually charge for the DLC, will there now be additional Acheivements/Trphies added as part of the DLC? The argument for not including them was "Microsoft does not allow adding acheivements/trophies to free DLC". That argument was just blown out of the water. I may download it for additional trophies and play more. If not, I will have to give it serious thought as I have already moved on to another game. Sorry SD, I waited as long as I could, but when there was no information about the DLC going into mid-month I gave up. Most people inthe forum are saying early July, but several articles on the web are saying July 30th. Which one is it? That is a hugh gap in time for most gamers. Just take note on how we all reacted to the slow release of the DLC. At one time we were told first week of June then it turned into "hopefully in June".

Sorry if it has been said, but I do believe the sad punk goggles are on top of the resistance guy's head in the last screenshot.

Since it's come up a few times, if you grab the DLC during the first two weeks, you'll own it forever and are able to re-download it for free even after this period.

You should edit the original article to reflect. Because it isn't very clear at the moment.

What happens if I am out of town those two weeks on vacation. Do I just miss out and have to pay? That's not a nice thing to do to your loyal customers. Did SD not realize they are releasing a limited "free" DLC (to make up for the bad initial release) during the height of vacation time in the USA? Or did they? If they did then it is a finacially driven business decision. SD can claim they offered it for free, but hope you are too busy to remember or unable to download during that time. That way you will be forced to pay for it later. Does anyone else feel like they are getting bent over the barrel on this one?

Thank you for the progress update! I've been wanting one of these for awhile. Though you probably wouldn't be able to tell from reading this thread (you can't make everyone happy), it really is a shot in the arm and will help keep the reasonable folks around here patient. It also helps the "Brink forum" google-results-guests and the lurkers who read this forum for news. I appreciate you making the dlc for free, for those complaining, we were given an approximate date and have a 2 week window, it won't be hard to get it for free. Now do your part and exercise that word of mouth advertising to tell everybody you know to download it in the first 2 weeks while it's still free and hopefully more people come back to the game. With the sense of urgency the 2 week window provides, we might get more people coming back to this game at the same time than if it was free to download whenever. :D

So NOT June then? I'm still here because you said JUNE. And free for 2 weeks...? You pack of absolute ****ers....I go on exercise for six weeks...starting in JULY. So you'll be expecting me, having bought Brink on release day and having kept the faith, to PAY for my DLC? I've got bad news for you, SD. I'll try to arrange something, but if I can't swing it and miss the deadline, I'll be done with this game. For all the posters that advocated patience - yeah, that worked out well for me, didn't it? Unlike some, I didn't feel ripped off on release day.....I've been PROPERLY mugged-off now, though. :stroggtapir: - my arse.\
Yes! The game that keeps on SCREWING!!!! And they are so proud of it!!!
