New Brink PC Update Brings End Game Chat and Lots More

A brand-new update is now available for the PC version of Brink, containing a huge stack of improvements and fixes. End game chat, a new Stopwatch results screen, VoIP sliders, a fix for invisible players, networking optimizations, and a massive amount of weapon tweaks are all among the things you'll be getting in this one, and we've assembled the complete changelog for your perusal below. All you need to do to get the update is sign into Steam.

For the dedicated server admins among you, there's a new server available, too, and it's freshly optimized to cut the filesize down to a third. If you haven't already, we recommend updating your server as soon as possible - as before, players with the new update will not be able to connect to servers running the old version of Brink.

With all that out of the way, here's the full changelog for this update:

General

 • Fixed invisible players sometimes (dis)appearing
 • Combat Intuition no longer gets triggered by disguised players
 • Flash Bangs no longer affect spectators
 • Fixed being able to collide with grenades as a spectator
 • Fixed drag-to still applying when enemies respawned
 • Enabling cheats now disables character saving and stats reporting for that session
 • Team switch delays now get reset on map restart
 • Vsync is now enabled by default
 • Fixed 3rd person animation when hacking as an Operative
 • Fixed server/client aim issues
 • Fixed dark shadow-band on narrow FOVs
 • Fixed potential crash during map load on client if heavily lagged right before a map change
 • Fixed potential crash if disguising on a dedicated server
 • Fixed odd line appearing during some cinematics

Levels

 • Fixed overtime when repairing the crane on Shipyard
 • Fixed overtime not ending when Hackbox is removed on Reactor
 • Fixed Container City lab door sometimes appearing closed for clients

User Interface

 • Added better chat support for match results and during midtro/outros
 • Added improved Stopwatch mode end-game review screen
 • Added options for VOIP volume in settings menu
 • Fixed navigation issues on menus with password fields
 • Disabled chatting when in solo mode
 • Added support for up to 4 deployable icons
 • Fixed being able to click invisible filter buttons when the filters panel is collapsed

Balance

 • Tweaked several weapons (full details here)
 • Added body type health to Netvars for future tweaking
 • Added map spawn timers to Netvars for future tweaking

Optimizations

 • Optimized networking to reduce snapshot sizes
 • Optimised light-rendering
 • Minor performance improvement to static AO rendering
 • Added conditional to sun-rendering to speed it up slightly in case of all shadow
 • Fixed sunlight when indoors in Security Tower
 • Added support for dummy files to improve loading times

Dedicated Servers

 • No longer disconnect server if Steam connection is lost and grace period ends
 • Added listClients server command
 • Disabled missing mesh/sound/image warnings on servers
 • Disabled character compositing on servers to reduce server size

+1 for more fixes and optimization regardless of platform.

Nice update. :)

Now to go test these new weapon changes!! mwuahahaha. Shotties are going to be awesomeness!
Posted on 23 June, 2011 - 18:42
Part of me misses the older days of ET where the MP40 and Thompson had the same accuracy and damage. That's about all I got to complain about, though. I feel like there will always be an 'optimal' weapon, and there will always be people whining. It's not as if the Carb-9 / Kross were weapons that weren't available to all players to begin with (body-type notwithstanding).

Holy cow. You guys even managed to tweak the shotguns a little, so much so that you brought a tear to my eye. Gonna have to play around with the new update, see how things have changed. In advance though, I have to say thank you very much and I'm looking forward to the DLC news even more now. =) Regards, Nexo

Another patch with come with the dlc content no doubt.
Posted on 23 June, 2011 - 18:52
Wouldn't know about that, but would be awesome if it included some minor additions, like a working server admin gui (instead of typing in the console, one can hope)

Enabling cheats now disables character saving and stats reporting for that session
This basically means that devmap has been re-added, we just don't allow any changes to your character to persist beyond the local game session.
Posted on 23 June, 2011 - 19:01
Would this be a step closer to a working demo function?
Posted on 23 June, 2011 - 19:02

How is the server and graphic performance now?

How is the server and graphic performance now?
graphic performance is definetely better. dunno about the servers. question though... i only have like 40 servers in my browser. is this due to the patch or where have the others gone?
Posted on 23 June, 2011 - 19:13
Looks like they made some much needed tweaks to Stopwatch. Looks a lot better comp ready to me. No?
Posted on 23 June, 2011 - 19:15

There's always a bit of lag here when a new patch is released while people update their servers.

I read somewhere that originally, Stopwatch tie breaker was XP if both teams hold.

So yeah nice patch. But am I the only one who thinks that a higher spread (& recoil) is not a good nerf? It means that if you aim correctly you'll get a disavantage because bullets are going everywhere but not where you are aiming at.

I interpreted it as you will have to iron site aim more after the nerf to the spread rather than hip-fire. Or is that incorrect?
Posted on 23 June, 2011 - 20:15
Comp scene are bit desapointed by this update ! will see in game, but increase the spread is risky when lot of players wants the opposite and for me I really think the spread sucks ! but at least we have a nice chat, but still no crosshair custom or cvar unlock ....
Posted on 23 June, 2011 - 20:17
I mean at least apply some spawn time fixes! Whats the hold up? We know for a fact that the current spawn times are total fail. Why not at least change them to what everyone has suggested NOW and tweak them later. Spawn time fixes have been the #1 most needed fix over all for this game since day one and everyone is painfully aware of that. Yet our in game chat has been tweaked twice so far! woot!

Looks like Brink is nearing a release-ready/-complete state. So, when’s the price gonna drop so I can finally buy it?

Can’t answer you that, but Microsoft has to approve each release so publishing an update on the XBox may take some time compared to PC.

Yeah, no 360-love yet.....and they're using my most hated word - 'soon'. ho hum. Still, it's all a step in the right direction....

Sounds great, when can we be exprecting some of these wonderful mods and weapons tweaks for the 360? gonna take a wild guess and say the wildly anticipated yet still unannounced DLC package?

It was only a PC update, maybe... MAYBE god I hope so when they come out for consoles we will finally get LAN playability.

AR base ammo + 1 magazine, except Rockstedi
At last! In fact all the weapon tweaks look pretty good, though would have been nice to see a slight buff on the Galactic. Got to try the new improved Frkn3k.

I agree the galactic looks and feels awesome, but it's pretty wimpy on it's own. giver 'er a double weapon buff and it's fun times though.

I can't wait to get it on console, I'm running my first heavy and I've tried all the weapons and when I tried Gotlung it was like I was shooting a loud ass airsoft gun at all eight players chilling in a tunnel on CS : ( all I did was get their attention lol.

It makes some sense in terms of buffing medium and heavy body types, from what I read (basically, they nerfed SMG and buffed AR and heavy weapons) It makes no sense at all in terms of quality of fights, unfortunately
Posted on 23 June, 2011 - 20:49
Sea Eagle nerfed = bad Carb nerfed = good No damage+ for Galactic = bad Gotling damage+ = good Gotling accuracy- = bad (it didn't have any to start with!) AR tweaks = all look good However, it would appear that SMG lights are still going to be able to own Heavies, so a huge balance-error has been missed? Looks like I'll be deleting my heavy and going back to the Rokstedi. Hope tweaking the 360 doesn't take too long!

Wait until you see it now. I almost felt sorry for the Resistance. So many light medic Carb 9 noobs slaughtered in the last 3 matches. Previously my huffing and puffing and flopping about like the Hamburglar with a peashooter was worthwhile. WORTH the whole damn WHILE YOU CARB 9 LOSERS  You should have been trying new guns instead of sticking with your shiny, now who is laughing HUH PUNK? That is nothing though, wait until you try the Chinny and Hjammer.

What exactly does chat between the maps mean? I heard from other players on Teamspeak that they get a chatbox during the scores screen etc. That doesn't seem to be happening in my game, though. I can use the chatbox during the video sequences, but not during the score screens. And yes, both the game and the server are patched. Other than that, nice update. Looking forward to more.

You're not the only one. Seems like we are going further and further away from RTCw style shooting mechanics which is sad considering that is SDs most popular game/formula.

Not for me. Just made it a whole lot of fun. People thought I was mad with a medium medic whose primary was the nade launcher. I can't wait to try it now!

Lol all of the Carb 9 Spammer n00bs are angry lolol. I mean I'll use the gun, but I'm not that serious about it. I'll wreck shop with anything you give me cause I'm just that kind of guy :-)

im saying that as a competitive player, this game will end with esl tournament, ofcourse competitvly wise its just too random now and if you add completly unbalanced maps then, you can as a competitive player say, that you've wasted your money... you can treat it however you want ; p

Care to explain instead of giving random, down trodden comments with no reasoning?
More spread == more randomness in fight. This game is a FPS. The core of gameplay is the gunfight. I've yet to test it, but adding more spread is taking control AWAY from the player and adding more randomness. Making fights decided by chance rather than aim. There were many other methods to bring back Heavy and Medium in the mix. Weapons already were too imprecise, this is now even worse...

thank you Badman!

well there is 2 way to balance the weapons, either you nerf the most powerful or you buff the least powerful. the nerf of the carb means that SMGs are not the equal of ARs anymore. it seems logical that it is the thing to do with the (too many) weapons available. now don't get me wrong, i'd rather have a more limited choice of weapons that would behave more like in the previous ETs. I still have fun playing Brink but I do miss my strafe and straight shooting guns...
Posted on 23 June, 2011 - 21:35
Good patch, I dont know if its just me but my fps went from 30 to 60 on most maps when it's around 10 players. Shots seem to register better than before, overall game just feels more polished than before. I hope SD unlocks some fps cvars to boost fps in the future.

Nerfing the Carb, no problem. But NOT by making weapons even LESS accurate!! There are other methods
Posted on 23 June, 2011 - 21:37
its so funny. its just like on the world of warcraft forums when class xy got nerfed. oh, uh, my carb got nerfed. you destroyed the game. its no fun anymore, coze carb was the most fun, now its not, it got nerfed. meh. you might want to get used to the term "want some cheese with your whine?"...
Posted on 23 June, 2011 - 21:41
Heres my opinion on the update. Graphics and Optimising - Always a good thing, seems to have the game running smoother. UI/General fixes - After game chat hasnt seemed to work for me on the last 5 servers i went on today post patch, maybe its just those servers but all the after game chat boxes are still locked. - In game chat is a little better, at least you can read what people have said now and not be forced to bring down console to check. - Stopwatch info is nice, a start at least Weapons SMGS - Carb-9 has been nerfed to oblivion, you have ruined this gun. I appreciate it was overused, but now it will be underused. The fact that you have "evened the spread, reducing clustering to the centre" (TRANSLATION = Weapon no longer shoots where you point), has made it too unreliable to play with now. I played 3 maps with it today to check if it was still usable, 75% of the time it is ok, the rest it is either very inaccurate or completely inacurate. I stood behind a stationary sniper i had flanked, no less than a metre away and fired a clip into the back of his head, cursor not moving off him. A single bullet hit. I now understand what you mean by not clustering to the centre, this happened 3 more times in that match and more in the others, i will take some clips if neccessarry as its beyond ridiculous. - Kross, has not been changed much, but what has been changed i feel was completely uncalled for, Kross felt like one of the only well ballanced guns on the game. Where it was low damage, high RoF, high accuracy, therefor rewarding accuracy without becoming OP. The increased spread has just made it more forgiving and rewards skill less. Its still alright but now feels a bit dulled down from its all or nothing predecessor. - Tampa, has gone from bad spread to lottery spread. Sometimes great, sometimes awefull, iv never liked the feel of this gun but thats personal opinion and not relevant, its performance now i guess has been brought up to a level where it can now be considered an option when talking about smgs. - Bulpdawn, you havent changed, however i feel it should be, its low ammo and low clipsize should be rewarded with tighter spread when hipfiring. Pistols - Tokamak and Kolt both still do far too little damage to be of any use. - Sea eagle was the only weapon on the game i felt should be kept as it was. Yes it was powerful, but it wasnt overpowered, it required skill to use. Now it is just a little less reliable, but still usable, just feels like you are trying to stop us from feeling content with any weapons by making them all annoyingly unaccurate. Assault Rifles - Gerrund feels ok - Rhett feels ok - Frkn3k still useless. Its spread isnt tight enough, its first bullet hits then its recoil takes the other 2 off target, damage isnt enough, pretty much all weapons kill faster than this weapon. - Rockstedi is becoming more usable, it still needs a little more damage boost, and it needs to have the accuracy of a pre-patch sea eagle when firing from the hip for it to be of any use. At the moment its just a less damaging sniper. Shotguns (so much for no one shot kills eh  ) - Hammerdjeim is now very dangerous. In some situations this will be extreamly OP post patch, i used it for a map on resort, when on the last objective i stood in the hacking room and killed 6 of 8 of their spawn wave with a mix of one shot kills and 2 shot kills. Not even hard to aim with it, has forgiving spread and huge damage. I feel you may have overstepped the mark with this weapon, but i doubt enough people will take advantage of it to cause an issue as it is a situational weapon. - Mossington, slightly better yet still not a decent choice for a medium, definately needs to be a light weapon. Its still taking 2 shots usually to kill with, which takes longer than an smg does to kill someone and yet its even weaker as it lacks the mid range damage of an smg, so i cant see why it shouldnt be a light weapon. It would actually have a use in that case. Heavy Weapons - Has helped out all heavy weapons, however i feel the Maximus needs an accuracy buff and a reduced recoil to make it more like the GPMG in etqw. These updates have helped the heavy class, but i feel the health of the heavy is still too low for them to be effective as their slow movement means that headshots are easy and guaranteed from all enemies consistently and because of this they die in most situations pretty fast. With the exception of small rooms armed with the Hammerdjeim. Overall Opinion of Weapon balances I feel you have a mixed bag of changes, some for the better, some for the worse. I think nerfing the carb was a mistake, that gun felt like a weapon, as opposed to the rest which feel like your playing at a disadvantage. I personally think that instead of nerfing the carb, you should have boosted the other weapons, i.e made the kross have slightly longer range so it was the more accurate alternative to the carb, giving the players the choice of accuracy or damage. Assault rifles need a boost, a very big boost, the speed penality and lack of mobility that comes from mediums is made worse by their assault rifles that have ridiculously huge hip fire spread, and high recoil when sighted (except gerrund). I apreciate the recoil and the spread are managable, but they shouldnt have to be, the medium is at a disadvantage to lights, it has less speed and only a little more health, it needs weapons that are effective enough to make it a hard decision between the two. The heavy is stepping in the right direction, although the heavy needs boosted health to be of any use. Also i cant help but think that you are going back on your word and your USP where there are no one shot kills and everyone can react to damage, as you have boosted an automatic shotgun to be able to one shot mediums never mind lights. Thats enough for one huge post. Hope you take the time to read it as i am not the fastest typist :P. :stroggtapir: :stroggtapir: :stroggtapir: :armadillochase:
Posted on 23 June, 2011 - 21:42
/concur Apoc My personal grief is with Kross. Why raising spread? It was one of the few weapons rewarding aim a bit!
Posted on 23 June, 2011 - 21:45
So what? VALVe has to approve each patch too.
Valve don't, devs can update their games when they feel like they need to. "Once patches for a user's installed software have been uploaded to Steam, they are applied the next time the user logs in or launches a game." Steam allows developers and publishers to change prices and restrict game availability depending on the user's location. This can cause some games to cost more than retail prices, despite digital distribution removing the costs of manufacturing, packaging, design, and logistics.
Posted on 23 June, 2011 - 21:45
Changing the spread from weighted to a cone of fire system reduced the Day of Defeat community to half its original size before it was changed back. I'm sure it'll work a lot better in Brink.

Lol all of the Carb 9 Spammer n00bs are angry lolol. I mean I'll use the gun, but I'm not that serious about it. I'll wreck shop with anything you give me cause I'm just that kind of guy :-)
No, all the people that want their fkn bullets to go where they aim are mad. The gun play is utter crap. I don't care how much damage the guns do.. I do not want or need random variables in a fps... I should be rewarded for aiming. It should be so reliable that I know they die before the latency catches up because the guns are that reliable and predictable. I don't mind spread.. or recoil but it needs to be constant or at least allow us to have control over bursting. If I aim at the center of the head I should hit the head.. no question. Good now that we agree do something about it. I shouldn't have to aim upper body because your game can't get it right.

Disappointing, was nothing added?

Changing the spread from weighted to a cone of fire system reduced the Day of Defeat community to half its original size before it was changed back. I'm sure it'll work a lot better in Brink.
This man speaks the truth, DOD had centre weighted COF, then DOD:S introduced even spread in 2005 and after 1,000,000's of forum inches on the subject they went back to centre weighted in 2008. If you thought the game was skill-less and random before, you ain't seen nothing yet, well done SD ;) Oh well, glad I stopped playing Brink now :D

It's called catering to the lowest common denominator. This is like punishing the genius that is in a room full of idiots, to make the idiots feel better about themselves.
You suggest that we make the bunch of idiots smarter, isn't that just as annoying for the originally smart person? Analogies suck, the carb-9 was nerfed because it was too overpowered and moving all other weapon damage up would definitely have been too risky. The carb-9 is still good, it just has a more viable weakness.

only dev/debugging stuff as far as i can tell

Valve don't, devs can update their games when they feel like they need to. "Once patches for a user's installed software have been uploaded to Steam, they are applied the next time the user logs in or launches a game."
And yet, VALVe is approving pathes before uploading them to STEAM. Do you really think that they allow devs to upload anything like that? So if a dev upload a massive virus, it's a total ass-rape for VALVe. So no, it's ain't validated automatically.

BTW new (?) stopwatch rules are a joke. If both team don't complete the first objective, then XP makes the difference. But if you get killed more, you use more buff, and you get more XP. So the team with the lower skill will win, EPIC VICTORY!

Any news about killing off the hacks? Brink has been unplayable the last week or so because of these people. I'm not going to link to the hack directly but this is part of it: http://img32.imageshack.us/img32/4123/fw3brinksshots004.jpg http://img853.imageshack.us/img853/8154/fw3brinksshots005.jpg http://img801.imageshack.us/img801/4199/fw3brinksshots007.jpg

adjusting spawn times to 20 offense 30 defense will offset any full holds.

By viable weakness you mean random and by random you mean unreliable and by unreliable you mean frustrating now take this and apply to all guns and you've got Brink. I don't care if the dmg was 2 per bullet I want my bullets to go where I aim or miss because I didn't control it correctly. This game has been one of the few times I truly felt scammed. I guess I should stay away from all AAA titles. Oh well here's to hoping for an ETLive or something along those lines. Oh ya.. still getting the damn sound glitch.

And SD deliveres :penguin: A couple of minor user experience issues for you - _showScores should be made to work in midtro/outro - When typing in chat box and entered text exceeds chat box size it should scroll to show what you're typing

idd but anyways, this game has so many problems.. weapon balance should have been the last one to worry about this is going to be like endrant's wolfenstein. the game was clearly a beta and they were thinking to find the right color for server browser....

its not a bot even if it says it is!!! look here http://www.splashdamage.com/forums/showthread.php?t=28907 i wonder if they test before they release (obviously not.. its a lotto everytime)

Are you guys SERIOUS? SD, did you really just implement a HUGE patch and leave out being able to change spawn times? Is it really that hard to change the spawn times? Congrats.. you just put the nail in the coffin for this game.

There's no reason to make guns more inaccurate. Like everyone else said it just sucks, SD, and you should know that. Maybe if enough of us say it over and over you'll realize you were wrong and fix it once and for all.
Analogies suck, the carb-9 was nerfed because it was too overpowered and moving all other weapon damage up would definitely have been too risky. The carb-9 is still good, it just has a more viable weakness.
It's crazy how you get guns like the carb-9 which are "too overpowered" and then guns that are so underpowered after so many years of development. Maybe you all should have stuck to 1 ~ 3 guns and actually balanced them instead, since obviously balancing this many resulted in every gun suffering somehow or being "too good." Shouldn't all the guns have packed quite a punch and been insanely accurate? Oh well, at least TF2's Uber Update comes out in a while and even if the new weapons turn out to be imbalanced, at least I have decent FPS, a demo recorder, 1st person spectator, and everything a PC game should have. Oh, and there's even a cvar for making the spread the exact same for every shot. I can think of a game that needs all of that stuff, can anyone else?

Wow, this patch looks pretty good... Lets me get my time machine to go back to when it was relevant to keeping this game alive.

I'm all for balanced weapons, but at least make them enjoyable to use. :)

Nice update but too late, guys. The competition is already (as good as) dead. You should've just rushed out a patch that added spawntimer netvars, really.
