Question about sprites in a map

How do I get a sprite in a map, like a flame for a torch. It doesn't have to look perfect, what would be ideal is the flame that comes out of certain pipes in the game. I have no idea how to do stuff like this though :-/

That wants a .fx file or something. I just found this thing to browse the particles, how to I place one of the particles in a map? And will it work in MP?
