what is the default lightmap size without specifying -lightmapsize 256?
what does that command, only increase the size of the tga's or change the actual luxels/unit (resolution) allowing more detailed shadows?
another question: what impact has a more detailed lightmap on compile times and the ingame fps?

i think default is 256 (at least for rtcw/et). more detailed lightmaps means longer compile times but it shouldnt affect performance.

The lightmap size doesn't affect compile time at all, unless you're using lots of high-res lightmaps that were normally limited by the default 128x128 pixel size.

All Q3 engine games use 128x128 lightmaps, but ET supports external ones of any size.
