hello everyone,
When a game requires the cd to be in the drive,we are not satisfied...
this time , the game seems to require a hard drive, but I am not satisfied...
I burnt the game on cdr as it is on my hd (copy paste).
I launch it from the cd , I launch a hosted game map,
almost 100 percent loads corectly but,
it returns to the principal menu with an error message :
could not write hunkusage.dat
I made few tests on my hd:
-I write-protected all the files.
-I deleted hunkusage.dat,I made a shortcut to another hunkusage.dat in another dir, but ET rewrite it automaticaly in .\ETMAIN .
So my question is :
-Is it possible to solve this problem and how, in order
to play ET (phone home) from a cd ?
ps: I need to play it on computers on wich we can only use 10 megs per person.
thanks

I wouldn't have thought so. hunkusage.dat and etconfig.cfg (and maybe others like the etkey file and process ID (pid)) are files that the game will create if they're not present, and therefore needs write access to the etmain folder.
You could try running ET from the HD, join a server, wait for PB to auth (thereby creating an etkey file), then burn it to CD. But I think you'd still come unstuck with the pid file.

Dont think itll work. Files within the game are constantly changing and obviously it wont be possible to keep changing changing the files on a CD.. at least not yet. So im afraid your stuck with it on HD.

You need only to look at your own user name to answer your question. At least, I'd imagine. :blah:

Maybe you can create a ramdrive and copy the cd to that, but I have no idea if it will work :bump:
And you'll need lots of RAM.

you would be able to run the game on a flash card of USB storage device as you constantly have writing permission (1 gig USB storage would be perfect) but as stated above the game doesn't have ingame CD-writing capabilities lol so it would be impossible

There is a live cd version of Gentoo Linux with ET, you boot on the CD and it launch the game, you don't even need a hard drive. I've not tested it so I don't know much.
Here is the adress: http://www.gentoogames.com/
Hope this helps.

Yes, it is possible but as you've noticed, you do need some form of R/W storage. Those 10 MB per player will be plenty. When starting ET, set the fs_homepath cvar to the name of the directory you want to use on your hard drive. I.e.:
et.exe +set fs_homepath c:\blah\playerdir
Make sure the directory you point to already exists. ET will create an "etmain" and "pb" directory in under that path you specify. Temporary files like hungusage.dat and all the Punkbuster files will be created in those subdirectories.

I found this interesting so I downloaded it and I must say it works pretty much as advertised. The loading times are longer as you would expect and everytime a new sound is played the game stalls while the wav file is loaded from the CD. From my brief testing is once that sound is played it seems that it's kept in memory so it doesn't need to loaded again.
My main gripe is the extra buttons on my mouse won't work with it. The mouse wheel doesn't work either. It's worth giving a shot if you got time to kill and broadband.

wow !!!!
such a lot of answers in a very short time,
and good ones.
It seems that LeKdevil.NL was right , and got the best solution IMHO ,
simple, cheap, etc ...
So, a special thanks to U,
it works perfectly well, and without punkbuster , it takes only 1,5 megs on HD ,
perfect ....
how did you know this trick , where did you get that info ?
thanks to all of you :-)

Something I've found:
Reconstructor (http://reconstructor.aperantis.com/)
With the help of the script / program it's possible to create an adjusted live CD version of Ubuntu V 6.06 LTS.
