Base is originally an RTCW map (copyright).

I guess aslong as you give credit where credit is due, and you do not take money for your map, then yes. You can borrow stuff from that map.

The author just thought he could get away with it, and it seems to have worked. However, should Activision once decide to sue him, he's still guilty.

In case of books, most of the time you have the right to use citations when you cite the author and source, but in case of these maps, no such right is specified.

hmm but the question is, if i make a replica it isnt stolen...it may look similar, but it isnt stolen...or i am wrong? :D
in fact all i want to do it to cut out a (really) little part of the map which will be included in my TJ map im working on.
im unsure, but i somewhat doubt that they will go nuts on me just cause of that.

Technically, it is still illegal to copy any part. Mimicking is a mixed bag, seeing how you aren't copying the real brushwork but still can't prove that you actually didn't copy it from the original source.

However, if it is used in a TJ map, I guess it's better to just "try to get away with it" unless you are looking for a reason to abandon your map.

Why copy anything?

Create something new and original instead of using someone elses work as a shortcut.

It's one thing to use a source map to learn how something was done, or to get the scale correct on a door, room or a piece of furniture.

It's quite another to take a source map, throw a few new hallways in it, toss a clan banner up on the wall and then release it as a new project.

If people keep using stock source maps as new work, the publishers may stop including them altogether.

None of the stock maps for Quake Wars were released, instead SplashDamage included a few tutorial maps with the SDK.

Spend a little time learning the process - in the long run you will be better off and may actually create something that's never been done before - that's what keeps people coming back for more.

its not about that.
like i said, im making a trickjump map which also has "real jumps" which can be done on stock/custom maps.
i do also create custom jumps but i do want to have both, real and custom jumps.

You're dead on MrLego, but the matter is different with TJ maps.

TJ maps offer the convenience of letting players practice loads of different TJs without switching maps for every other jump. And to offer the ability to practice trickjumps, you need to mimick the map conditions as good as possible, something you can almost only do by copying the brushwork into such details as brush cuts.

Now you can still do some interesting stuff with TJ maps, e.g. let players jump next to each other, or whatever.

I'm not knocking TJ maps or anyones work here it just seems like once one someone borrows a piece of a stock map the following week there are others doing the same thing.

When RTCW came out there was a rush to release mp_beach & mp_base knockoffs, some just retextured, others having alternate routes added.

The same happened with ET's Goldrush and Quake 3's dm17 map.

I have downloaded prefab packs that I thought were original works only to find that they were rips from sample maps with a new authors name on them.

After a while you stop downloading custom maps because thay all look the same.

Boosted - Good luck with your TJ map.

you want to practice trickjumps for non tj maps, host yourself and go nuts
