Would you say it's better to rent a server or just purchase one yourself? Pros and cons of each ?I want to get into the admin side of the game but I'm not sure which way to go. Some of the servers I've seen to buy are only 500 - 700 dollars which doesn't seem too bad when a rental server looks to be about 60 - 90 dollars a month. Thought about making this a poll but I'd like some comments to go along with a response

if I had enough money I would buy a home server put it together, and then rent a server off it while using it for my own too, so the person renting it is paying for the costs (electricity, internet,..)

I don't think any residential internet lines have the bandwidth necessary to run a dedicated public game server.

I have a 6meg cable modem. I test out between a T1 and a T2. I can always upgrade to a 12meg. think that'll do?

if you can maintain a constant 1.5meg UPLOAD, you should be ok

if he only wants to run 1 server he doesnt need a very powerful machine.
something like a pc with 1,6 ghz and 512 ram should do.

might be fine for 3-6 players, but thats about it.
and even then they cant expect "good" pings (around 50, that is).

I've got 2.0ghz and 512ram. And an upload of 1meg... I thought I had 2meg :o lol
The problem is I have a router and I can't get it to work because I guess the ports 27960 is closed, when I start ETDED it says 'sending heartbeat to ...(something)' and I dunno what it means...

When you host a server yourself usually the pings are worse, since you have at least one additional step for the data (from your server to your provider backbone), which has to be traveled twcie by the data.
