View Full Version : Wolf:ET Classic Servers?

Anyone know any Wolf:ET Classic Servers?
(aka Vanilla Servers, no-mods)

I really missed the old ET, they way it was developed. Personally, I don't play ET as much, after the flood of all the mods. The regular servers have seemed to completely disappeared (or at least remain empty all the time).

I have tried another take on ET, but I find all these mods are noob orientated (including ETPro). And worst of all, I find they completly unbalance the game, in every way possible.

In preparation for ET:QW, I would like to play on a more classic level. At least in the first months of ET:QW, gameplay won't have those ridiculous features seen on the mods. So it's best to go back to our roots.

I have nothing against the mods, but they have completly replaced the game I loved, and it's hard to go back to that clean state. Anyways, they say too much of one thing is bad.

BTW, I don't mind new maps. Neither the old 6-map campaigns.

Go to Splatterladder: Serverlist (http://et.splatterladder.com/?mod=serverlist).
At the bottom, change the combobox's value from " ---All--- " to "et: etmain (340)" and click go on the button right of it.

Voila, enjoy vanilla W:ET, the way it was meant to be played. ;)

Use a server browser like ASE to filter out all the un-modded servers.

Err, how exactly ? You can configure both ETPro and ETPub to be essentially like vanilla ET, minus a whole boatload of bugs.

Go to Splatterladder: Serverlist.

Tried that, and have tried ACE before. If you show only v2.60 servers, and remove empty servers and those that are too far (and have bad ping). The list gets quickly reduced to less than 5 servers.

Right now, without any restrictions. ACE shows me 1 populated server @ Poland (not good ping)

Splatterladder shows me 14 populated servers. Only 5 are running 2.60 and are close (US). Of those 5, none are running PunkBuster. That is including:
* an 8 player server
* a Password Protected server
* two which run custom maps.

What's available is simply not good enough. There is only 1 server which is "kind of" playable. I will try going in there right now, then might try the other two. But I've already gone thru non-PB servers, and cheating is very common and easy to do.

I'd be happy if I could find at least 20 candidates, of which I could pick one.

But's that's not the case on most of the server out there.

Just because you can doesn't mean any servers actually do it. Hitsounds alone majorly change the way the game is played. It's pretty difficult to find a server using a mod that's just there to fix random bugs.

My point exactly, the only way to be sure, is a non-modded server. 100% Clean. Most of you might not notice the difference between the mods and a classic server, I notice right away.

About that 1 server I found, it was actually filtered wrong, and was running jaymod. Guess Splatterladder's filter is not very effective. ASE seems to be more effective, but it "effectivly" shows no populated servers (right now). I could join one of those empty servers, but things can get boring pretty fast.

About "195.4.17.142:27960" (enemy-territory.com) It needs 2 more packages mod on top of ETpro, I doubt it's running purely bug fixes.

EDIT:
The ASE filters I'm using:
"Campaign"
Mods: None
PB: On
Version 2.60

Well, there's a major bug in etmain 2.60 where you can get other people kicked when they vote to kick you. That alone should be enough to stop sane people from using it on their servers.

I really don't see how basic etpro/campaign is that big of a change (never mind making the game "more noob" whatever that is supposed to mean :/ ), but to each their own, I suppose.

I can live with that.

I have yet to find a server that is running only ETpro with the sole purpose of fixing bugs. Therefore having the rest of the features disabled. That search is even harder than finding a good vanilla server.

there's a campaign file, as all servers have and a lua mod that's not being used, it's for admins only
but you're right, it has hit sounds, you can turn them off if you like and etpro mapscripts, but I hardly see how that makes it noob orientated

On my quest to find a "Classic" server, and keep my ET folder clean, I have downloads disabled.

But OK, I decided to go with the flow, and enable downloads. It goes ahead and gets the 2 missing files. I still get disconnected with an Integrity Failure. I'm already guessing this is due to the 2.60b patch, but I don't have the old EXE at hand. So scratch that one...

I feel somewhat the same as you, McAfee, except that I like ETPro. It's hard to find a good server that's populated without unwanted crap to download, or annoying server settings. One thing to keep in mind is that the servers you find without people in them may have regulars, you just have to figure out when a good time to join is, or even join an empty server to try to get other people to join. If you can find a good server that has a website and forum you can hang out there and try to help build up the community.

Yep, I have a few "emtpy" candidates, but I don't think they have regulars at all. Some are for sale, and others are just dead. I've idled on a few for quite a while and have not sensed any other vital signs.

So far, this one seems like it could have a future:

The server updating doesn't affect this. ETPro works fine with the new server, but will always give the integrity error with the new client.

Time to splash some cash McAfee and rent your own server, then advertise it as the last official unmodded pure ET server and we'll come to you and play!

Your opinion. I don't find the difference that big, especially now that explosives don't give them.

ridicilous buildt-in-Spawntimer is "more noob"
Erm, the built in spawn timer doesn't do anything that a human who can count can't do on their own. I've done it both ways, and the spawn timer is only slightly easier than remembering which multiple of 20 or 30 on the match clock the enemy spawns on. Never mind the people who use heron on your pure etmain pubs.

Btw. you can get the ET sources, apply the ETPub patches, change the GAMEVERSION string back to etmain and compile it. Then you have a server with the ETPub features that looks like a vanilla server from the outside.

Without enabling downloads you can only play the stock 3-map campaigns (or single maps in another game mode).

It's pretty difficult to find a server using a mod that's just there to fix random bugs.
That's true, but there's no guarantee etmain servers are using the default config either. There's plenty of ways to screw with balance without any mod (spawn time and charge time is probably the most common).
