Anyone know of any? I see a couple of passworded pickup style looking servers but i dont know the password since im not involved in any 'scene'. Where do you better players play when you dont feel like dealing with the pub style play?

Any public server that is up fairly consistently can develop its own community and set of standards. There will still be the occasional newbs and knuckleheads (KHs) but they can be dealt with by the admins (if they are on) or the community (if there are not). But until such a community develops, you will be hardpressed to get enough people to listen to your pleas to kick a troublemaker.

I've had good games on alot of servers and bad games on the same. I had some good games on some of the ND-80 servers, Timelord, and many others I can't recall.

My personal favorite is CCM. I played RtCW there and now play ET on there server. The community is strong, the admins are active, and the rules are enforced (visit the website for the full set of rules: I think its onlinegaming.the-beach.net - no WWW).

KHs still occur, but they are being dealt with. Newbs aren't so much a problem unless they pick up bad habits. I like newbs... Remember, today's newbs are tomorrow's ET gaming community members! Treat them well and show them how the game is played.

Id love to have a pick-up game scene for ET.

Back when I played q3 CTF competitively, we had a non stop awesome pick up scene w/ lots of great players, and we used OSP to lock teams and play the game all the way thru.

ET desperately needs more servers; we're tryin to stuff 5,000 players onto 600 odd servers. ET would be busting some serious numbers if we had more servers ....

You might want to stop by some of my servers. I run a total of 10 ET servers with various setups. However, 9 out of 10 are limited lives, so if you dont like that format, you probably wont like mine. At night, I run 2 passworded servers. These passwords are fairly easy to find on my forums. Even the non pwed servers tend to have quite a few good players and I have 13 admins to help police the servers if a problem comes up and Im fairly accesible via IMs.

I do ping great to ND80 servers, but I prefer to play unlimitedlives. I just love the non stop raging chaotic battles those servers deliver. Death and Spam !!!

If you could find it in your heart to run more than 1 non limited lives, youd have a forever grateful fragger hoggin your bandwidth : )

Are the passworded servers limited lives as well?

1. are any of the ND80 servers stopwatch or all campaign mode?

2. Ignore Dawg, he is an uber-n00b ;)

Two of my servers are SW.

[ND80]Wake up the Echoes is SW rotating all 6 maps - IP 64.246.52.106:27962 and

[ND80]Sacred Heart is SW rotating Railgun and Radar - IP 207.44.246.63:27964

And yes, the passworded servers are limited lives. We are running quite a few different setups right now to test player preferences. Currently, besides those two we are running 3 map campaign, 6 map campaigns, 5 map campaigns (minus fuel dump) and even an 10 map campaign which runs the 5 map one twice :-)

I might change over to another unlimited life server in the future, but right everything is so packed at night with all 10 servers (and even last night we tested an 11th) it's hard to make changes :-)

And Infurita, great guide you have. We promote it all the time on my forums. Incredible effort you have put forth.

ND80,

I would also like to add to the plea to make more servers unlimited life. For pubbing imo, limited life servers dont work because people that have used up all there lives just leave the server and then new players join up to take there spots. I can see it being great and intense pickup or passworded style, but every pub game i play with max lives seems to just fall apart into the team that gets eliminated first actually wins the map cuz new popel join after they quit.

Grrrrr  I'm such a n00b, I don't even know what that means!

EDIT: I guess I should include some on-topic content in my post.
I prefer unlimited lives. I've noticed that they tend to be more popular and easier to populate. I also have to admit that I prefer stopwatch rather than long campaigns.

p.s. ignore Iffy, he is stopwatch whore!

Bah...

2 more BAHs and youre a llama : ) - jk -

I agree w/ U R Sux in that limited lives dont work for PUB Servers, but probably would be the most fun for scrims/ pick-ups / or matches. So I second the plea, if ND80 could switch maybe 2 or 3 servers, Im sure youll find them always full as well.

Just my $.02

I already said my piece on limited lives, but I just wanted to add that SiliconSlick should post a comment in every thread so we can have the pleasure of viewing his sig pic everywhere.

oh don't be a bunch of women. Limited lives rox your sox.

And I play a lot on ND80's stopwatch servers. They can be quite noob heavy sometimes, but I've had good games as well.

Last night on Wake Up The Echos I played in quite possibly the worst round in the history of FPS games however. Anyone who asks for details will die most gruesomly indeed.

XP does not make the player good. In fact IMHO XP tends to act like stats which draw away attention from the team to the player. In RTCW there are "point whores", in ET there are "XP whores". I've seen engineers totally abandon the fight to run off and build a command post to up thier XP instead of staying back and guarding the objective.

After all, the objective is not to level up, but to defend your objective and have your team win.

Engies who fix the tank after the vault doors are blown open, point whores or idiots? or maybe they just wanna fix tanks when they grow up ....

Point Wh0rn is fine w/ me in that these players are most likely doing the necessary things to win the game. But not always, it is possible to rack up a nice score and do nothing to advance the team.

POint is, we need a couple of good passworded servers that we can get alot of good players in so that teams are generally even talent wise. We all know how intense it would be to have a savage fight among players who all know the game/maps and obj's.

I remember q3 ctf quickly developed a pick-up scrim scene and all the good players wholesale abandoned pub servers

It is not necessarily wrong to fix the tank at that position, the MG can be helpful if used properly. It is more questionable if you fix the tank when the bridge hasnt been built, that will give very little help to the team and the bridgebuilding will be slowed down.

I meant fix the tank on the bank vault map, on fuel dump the tank machinegun is always useful. On gold rush map, once the doors have been blown open, the tank is not in a good spot for its MG.

When I play engy I repair it for the XP, especially on fuel dump. The reason is very simple, as a high level engineer I can sprinkle dynamite as if it was candy. If I then get into the fuel dump I can place a whole bunch of boomsticks before the axis even realize we're inside. Yeah it's still XP whoring I'll admit that, but for a purpose. There's little point in doing it after reaching the higher levels.

I think that most of the time taht people who CAN point whore, know enough to help the team win. usually when a team ownz another, its a result of the top xp point guys. Im sure there are exeptions though.

going slightly offtopic (http://www.ihateaol.co.uk/misc/funnypics/thread_direction.gif):
I see a couple of passworded pickup style looking servers but i dont know the password since im not involved in any 'scene'.
get mIRC (http://www.mirc.com/) (and perferably add a nice script like nnscript (http://www.nnscripe.de)) and find a server + channels to hang about on. For rtcw at least people tend to be on quakenet for euro and probably EnterTheGame or something in USA.

shao
14th June 2003, 17:12
there's #et.euro (mainly rtcw scene) and #etpickup (more sof2 / q3/ cs scene) on quakenet for pickup games. enjoy :D

Well I'm trying to make an experienced server only. I rather not password protect it as it will be empty. So I try to keep regulars on and to help those who are new. Right now I have a few regulars and might start handing out ref passwords to some to help keep the server "n00b" free. (N00b being someone who has no clue and doesn't listen to the team. Not to be confused with someone who is new to the game but is willing to listen and help out as best they can.

Server is listed below.

If you pass protect the server, but make the pass available to peeps in the forums, itll prolly stay full and n00b free, I know ill make a point to play on it.
