Hey just wondering if they will releas this game for DVD or CD or both, I know alot of new games now put games only in DVD because 4 or 5 cds is a hassle but it would really sux because I don't have a DVD player on my cpu.
An example was I went to buy Godfather and I found it in Canada is was only avaiable for DVD and no CD's so that suxed.
Does anyone know if so thx.
P.S IMO Counter-strike is one of the most competitive online games, I think this game will beat it, what does everyone else think?
Why don't you just buy a DVD player and forget about the hazzle to find games on just one format? They're really cheap nowdays.
Here in Sweden and I guess the rest of Europe you more or less have to have one since EVERYTHING is released on DVD's only now (at least if it needs a DVD, it's on a DVD).

Ya I know it's cheap but I would rather not have to spend my money on it if the game is shipped with cd's, just less of a hassle to spend money for somthing that I will only use to install a game in you know what I mean, but anyways if anyone knows any info on this, that would be awsome PEACE.

It should ship with both a CD version and DVD version. To do otherwise would be dumb :)
Yeah if you don't plan to buy any more games after QW or if a lot of games still get released on CD's then I guess you don't need one, for now.

Really? They must be ultra stupid over here in Europe then. :)

a logo at the end of the new trailer says clearly: "PC DVD-ROM SOFTWARE". who on this planet still works with cds ? this is just the same as if you are still using audio tapes or video tapes ... :D
and i think counter strike sucks.

and last but not least:
32x CD-ROM Drive!!!
PS: Add a floppy drive for good measure

Are you kidding, a floppy drive is the ONLY thing I'd put on my machine. That's right SD, I want QW in FLOPPIES! And not those luxury 1.44MB ones either. No, I want them all in 5 1/2" 700KB floppies... or else the calico colored guinea pig will hurt you all bad.
I actually think I have one of those somehere burried in a pile of old hardware I never got rid of. I wouldn't wanna carry the game home from the store though, thousands of old floppy disks. I would like to see the game box for that though.. :D

So it's only on DVD hey, kinda suxs but w/e this game owns and I will just buy a cheap DVD-rom for my computer.
But it's for sure gonna only be on DVD, is their anyone on these forums who can be 100% sure, like maybe some splash damage employees or somone who knows for sure Because I would really rather not have to go out and spend money on somthing that I really don't need, enevr thought that they would drop the cd-rom and start making games on DVD, but if thats the case then i guess I will need a DVD-rom.

13th May 2006, 02:53
Then why don't you wait till the game to release before you run out to buy a DVD-rom? It's not like there is a 6months queue for those anyway... I'm sure the devs have better things to do than to come in specifically to tell anyone if they should go out to buy a DVD-rom or a new HDD for that matter..
I don't understand all the hoo-haa about this. DVD-rom technology is like 3-4? yrs old.... and cost less than a single game......

I would rather know ahead of time, and do you really think it's that much of a hassle for the developers to say if the game will come with cd or dvd, that know big deal takes like 5 secs to answer that question, so really i don't think they would mind, inless they were not sure themselfs

I've been putting floppies in my floppy drive for years, and still using it. No CD-drive can beat the ritmic sounds of such a device. :D

if floppy, then it would be awesome if you could provide these 8 inch floppy discs. i need a new wallpaper in my room anyway, and quake wars discs would give my whole gaming room an individual qw touch

I'd guess it's up to the publisher, not the developer, to decide how to distribute the game. DVD makes most sense considering how big it must be with all the megatextures (mega = a lot! ;) ), but maybe it will be released on CD in some third world countries. ;)

Hmm lets calculate: we are thinking of 8 CD's so, 8x700=5600MB data.
No this: 5600/1.44=3889 3.5" floppies (dont know where 5 1/2" 700kb floppies deth_metal cuz at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Floppy_disk i dont see em, no 5 1/2", not even 5 1/4" 700kb floppies.
Transfer rate floppy: 500Kb/s. 500/8=62.5 KB/s. -> 5600x1024=5734400 KB data. 5734400/62.5= 91750.4 sec to install ET:QW from floppies (excluding teh time needed to remove floppy, insert next floppy, click on ok, i will use 5 sec for that) -> 91750.4 + 3889x5 = 111195.4 sec to install ET:QW on your pc from 3,5" floppies. 111195.4/3600= about 31 hours to install ET:QW.
I would say the best option is to drink some coffee while installing ET:QW. Ofcourse using teh BF2 DVD as coffee muck holder.

Still I dont see any 700KB 5 1/2" floppy. Most close is teh 720 KB 5 1/4" (look at the size! ;))
1 DVD would be cheaper then 8 CDs. Its not really the cost of a CD compared to teh DVD, but the fact that 8 CDs would probably take up the same to make as 8 DVDs, so 1 full game vs 8 full game copys, what would you choose when selling games when a DVD player is costing like nothing these days. You probably can find an old pc somewhere with a working DVD drive in it, and new they don't cost that much at all.
Its a shame when your PC doesnt have a DVD drive these days (I know this PC I am typing on is a shame, but ok teh specs make it as it is an old PII 350 MHz :P)

I got very good specs I just didn't really ever think that they would completly change all news game to be on DVD, never saw it coming, but I'm hearing from so many different people from forums that the game will be shipped with cd and dvd and other said just DVD, so only time will tell.

But how teh hell didnt you see this coming? Really every computer 5years or newer has one in it. A DVD Drive wont cost that much, but if it ships on CDs it could be a great idea to wait for HDDVD Drives or Blu-ray to be released/dropping in price.

That only means someone is making more money on the DVD edition, not that it's cheaper to manufacture several CDs (how many?) than one DVD. For all we know the CD edition (if there is one) may get a higher price...

Okay, so sorry for double posting, too lazy to edit.
But seriously...That's a good machine AND YOU DIDN'T BUY A DVD ROM DRIVE?! I just recently picked up a DVD-Rom drive from Play.com and it only cost me like £25.
Also, I imagine games *WILL* become DVD only at some point, just like what happened Floppy Disks and CDs. As DVD's become cheaper to produce and DVD drives become more common (Like they are at the moment) then there's no need to have to run two processing lines for the same product...I think.

Again with the whole not editing thing.
I payed more for my CD version of UT2k4(Right one?) than the DVD version cost.
1 DVD Vs 6CDs(I think it was 6...)
The DVD is clearly cheaper to produce...Atleast in terms of materials.

You can buy DVD Roms for as little as £5 in the UK. Thats not a lot of money at all.
TBH I think its about time id software and people started seeing the "DVD" thing better. When Doom 3 shipped they moaned that CD's were good, but people HATE CD's. Sure, they work on every computer, but PC's for the last, what, 6 years, have had them as standard? And at such a cheap price, it doesn't hurt at all.
When you get to the stage where you need more than 3 CD's, thats when its time to just say "Sod this" and release it on DVD only. If your a fan, you'll upgrade, simple as that.
Got-JuicE
14th May 2006, 22:26
Oh ya I'll upgrade, I wasn't complaining just wanted to know, just so if it was on cd I wouldn't have to worry about going out and buying one, but if it's only on dvd for sure I will get a dvd for my computer, this game looks too good to not get it.
Just in case it hasn't been made clear: ETQW will come on a DVD. The days of retail games on multiple CDs are numbered... and it isn't a very big number. Or something.

IF someone don't have a USB drive, their computer must be older than a Pentium 3, which should be below the MSR.
IF they have run out of USB ports, there is always something that can be unplugged. Another option is a USB hub.
This could also double as anti-piracy counter measures.

Size 8 would be unfair for the people with bad eyes. My suggestion would be Size 72 in Tahoma. Hell...Just stick one character on each A4 sheet.
That'd solve the Compatabilty issue, and probably get rid of that "tree" problem the world is having.
