Kenny G is funny??
..must be a british thing
*KAGE assumes Nail lives in england*
what is up with people these days. HELLO it's called the internet... there should be a 'leaked' gameplay video or something by now...
btw i'm loving the digital distortion thing they've got happening on that little movie.

Yea KAGE, I'd be willing to bet that Nail is British because of the way he spelled the word "humour".

btw, sorry about spelling it correctly, don't speak murican

Ummm, humour is a variant of humor. The standard way of spelling it is "humor". If your not British, then I know a bunch Canadians who thinks it's cool to spell words another way. I think it's silly the dictionary gives the same word a different spelling.
Kind of retarded, don't you think?

And I know a bunch of people (often with English as first language) that doesn't know the difference between "your" and "you're". :D
On topic:
The soundtrack isn't all that important since it's a MP only game, but I won't complain if there's a nice intro song as long as it doesn't feature Celine Dion. :)

You're right, except that I do know the difference between the two. I can only say to you is that it was a small error on my behalf and it won't be the last one either. :D
Geeez, I really thought this topic was about music not English 101.

Hopefully ET:QW's going to be the first MP FPS title to be released with a predominantly Folk/Trad Jazz soundtrack. Each game box will come with a pair of stripey braces (suspenders to our North American customers) so you can hook your thumbs inside them and tap your toes while nodding on the on-beat. C'mon now, altogether: One-two-Three-four-One-two-Three-four...

I wonder when this "standard" was developed? I do believe that humour and colour existed long before some people dropped some of the letters to allow them to spell words easier. As Kage pointed out, the countries of the Commonwealth speak proper English, not some bastardised version of it. Now it makes we wonder why it is called the English language???
So how about a bit of C&W for the background tunes. A little bit of Johnny Cash and Willie Nelson.

Orchestral style music suits best as it easily blends into the background. I cant stand listening to my own music when gaming, its distracting. I have to admit i did enjoy Half Life 2's soundtrack, when the techno kicked in during the railyard chase i actuall enjoyed it, it helped with the pace and atmosphere.. i thought i was in a holywood movie for a while. Then i wised up.

Wikipedia has a fine entries on both spellling differences (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_and_British_English_spelling_differences) and the notable lexicographer Noah Webster (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Noah_Webster) 1758-1843, compiler of the eponymous Dictionary and (perhaps more importantly) "The Elementary Spelling Book" which by 1861 was selling a million copies a year. Webster was keen to make American English easier to learn, more efficient to use and generally less elitist, so he simplified the spelling by eliminating redundant letters. So post-Webster American English has color instead of colour, honor instead of honour and thru instead of through (although, bizarrely, not enuf instead of enough). Center/centre, theater/theatre, draught/draft, axe/ax, disc/disk, grey/gray etc.
There. That's pretty much all I learnt in a whole junior honours year of English Language. Oh, that and splitting infinitives. And the Schwa.
corvey
21st February 2006, 11:49
Yea, you are right, colour and humour are originally Englishs word and over the years I guess we Americians figured you spelled it wrong and it needed to be corrected, now color and humor is the new standard in American spelling apparently. You can tell I don't get out much. :)
Sorry I ever brought it up. Gezz. It was originally meant to point where one was from by the way they spelled something, not because it was spelled wrong and then Nail pointed out "Muicans". Good call Nail :)
OK,That should have been the end of this "off topic" unless somebody likes to keep stirring up dust.
So now can we get back on the topic of music..

Thinkin the classical route could be good, I always enjoy opening a can of whuppass to the sound of Adagio for strings
SniperSteve

Dazza, That was not appropriate.
Either a classical or orchastral with a mix of rock. You do have to have some of the quake theme come through, which is all out rock.

Rock makes me go into all out kill mode which isn't always a good thing in team games where sometimes making the sneak and waiting for an oportune moment is a better course of action.
In hindsight probably wasn't appropriate but I've had a ceck morning and I feel the need to vent all my pet hates and insult everyone, hope no offense was taken :blah:

at a gess the sound for the game will probably match or be similar to the sound on the trailer asuming they are trying to create the same kind of atmosphere in the actual and im pretty sure SD would not misslead us like that
as for games like bf2 on the other hand, the exiting fast paced shooter action in the trailer but might have been exagerated a bit to shift the game
SniperSteve
21st February 2006, 19:32
BF2 in the trailer looked like this hard core fast paced action shooter with cool vehicle stunts and realism. Once you played it, it was just like. Bleh...

Hmm... as Id soft. seem to like metalmusic, as for Quake, Doom 3 and those games used that type of music, I think ETQW might be using some sort of music from that genre too... however I'm not sure as for what I've heard it's splash damage themselves who're doing etqw, and that Id ain't helping at all? :F
If that's the case I really have no idea of what it could be. :) I'll just sit down a wait for the goodies.

No music please, unless it's made to last. In many games I eventually end up disabling the music, because it gets too repetitive/annoying after a while. The solution is to use ambients instead, or forget music alltogether and compensate with rich and high quality sounds. If music is too noisy/badly designed, you can't hear footsteps, for example.
By 'made to last' I mean 'it doesn't make your ears hurt after a while'. HL1 machinegun may sound powerful, but hurts your ears. Wolf:ET guns sound wimpy, but are merciful for your ears. Half-life was otherwise very good in sound effects/ambients department. Homeworld2 has some very good ambients, too.

SniperSteve
22nd February 2006, 00:29
Oh yes! Bagpipes!
lol.
Well, there will be menu music, ther has to be. Many Multiplayer games dont have in-game music unlike single player. So I'm not sure if there will be any in-game, but for the menu music i predict something like the quake music. Just a bit less rocky.
Or we could have bagpipes...

music in MP games is very interesting here. in ET and rtcw music would be pretty hard to encorperate because the objectives carry little emotional conection to the player... its more just about beating the other team. As aposed to a single player game where the player races agasint time to save a beautiful women
music could be used to build up the tension but unless the story is clear any atmosphere created by the music may seem out of place
the reviews for ETQW say that the levels tell storied such as how the strog came to have the railgun etc and explain things about the quake universe. With more of a story to the maps music may be better used to tell the story
althogh each map will be played countless times so the msuic could be more repatative and become anoying than in a SP map that the player may play once or twise

I liked the musical snippets in RTCW, well I say liked, I mean they're memorable and not because they were overly annoying. You know, the bits as the round ended and the steady flow of Good Game started. :)
No music in game but some catchy ditties between rounds and during map loads etc. That'd be cool.

Though not on that thing during map, I would just find that irritating. :F Though, at intermission and such things (If they're still gonna keep that.)

Music has already been decided, the SD team will sing "Jingle Bells" a fragment of 10 seconds which will repeat itself troughout the game, also during combat!
also, it has been reported there will be a special dance mode where players can do a 1 on 1 dancing the 10 seconds song.

About the music in ETQW.
SD is in England, right? Then you can walk over to David Gilmour.
When Allies win: 60 sec guitarsolo.
When Axis win: Another Gilmour solo.
In game music: When Allies attack: "Keep on rocking in the free world", Neil Young.
Yes, I am near 40. Yes, I often wear blue jeans.

EDIT: And yes, I like Dire Straits. "Lady writer on the tv.. "

Hello, new to the forum. I think the server menu music on ET was the best. Hope ID & SD can keep that for QW's server menu.
Also, as far as voice chats go, I think that it would be funny if ID & SD could keep the ET BETA voice chats in QW. I miss those...

I love game soundtracks, I own quite a few....Final Fnatasy, Chrono Trigger, BioHazard, etc. Generally speaking I kill all the music whenever I play an FPS because it always breaks my immersion when I'm playing.
I was just blowing through Black, that Criterion FPS, and the parts that were most annoying had music associated with them. That was the first game in I've played in a while without the option to kill the music.
Ultimately music or no, I'll turn it off when I get in game.
As someone said, ambient sounds are far more important to me.

I'm gonna get shot for sayin this but there was one aspect of Battlefield I liked *ducks*, Whilst there was no music when you were on foot and you could hear people around you running about etc. If you got in a vehicle it had a stereo in it, it gave away your position somethin shockin but flyin a chinook in carryin a tank to the music of 'Flight of the Valkries' is always fun.
