Things You Were Too Afraid to Ask: Aaron 'Hoffa' Hoffman

HoffaThe latest staff member to be gently tickled with our Sword of Interrogation +3 is part-time Australian and Lead Environment Artist Aaron 'Hoffa' Hoffman. Aaron was part of the Q3F mod team that went on to become Splash Damage and previously got to work his artistic environmental magic on Enemy Territory: QUAKE Wars. He's also the only member of the team with a pilots license, but so far that hasn't helped him get to our cake-filled kitchen any faster.

To find out more about Aaron, how he ended up at Splash Damage, and what tapir-shaped zeppelins have to do with all this, gaze upon his megatexture-coated staff profile.

Aaron, I have to say that when I got a first hand preview of ET:QW ah-way-ah-way back in March 2007 (at the U.S. Santa Monica preview day) I was really amazed by the terrains and megatexture work. And that was well before your final polishings! I just wanted to drive around the maps and enjoy the scenery, but some Strogg-beast kept shooting at me so I decided to at check out a bit of the ET:QW game play too. :P Awesome work man.

Cheers mate. Always wished I could have added some more lov'n and uniqueness to the terrains, but had to let the masses wage war on the scenery. Maybe the GDF were really just Austrian mountain climbers looking for a nice view, and the Strogg had to just come along and spoil it all.

I live in Australia. I hope to become a game designer (I think thats the job in the Gameing world I want). I plan to go do a coarse on it (in 3 years cuz I am 15). what do you recommended I use in the mean time to get mah skills up? ps. It sucks because Red Ant shut down, Krome fires people more often than people log into WoW. and god knows I don't want to work at Auran... Do you think there would be better devs here in 5 years time? pps. did you here, we have a rannger in charge now... NOOOO! - Jack Pipsam
