Rock, Paper, Shotgun Interviews Ed Stern, Lives to Tell Tale

Gaming blog Rock, Paper, Shotgun is home to a brand-new interview with Brink's Lead Writer and Knower of Things Ed 'BongoBoy' Stern. Somewhat unsurprisingly, much of it is focused on game-writerly business, with Ed discussing some of the challenges he's faced word-smithing for Brink as well as shedding light on some of the story-telling devices (including cinematics) used in the game. There's also talk about moving from Enemy Territory to Brink, making games more accessible, and Brink's art style.

In entirely less digital news, the latest issue of 360 Magazine here in the UK includes a Brink preview as well as a fresh interview with Splash Damage's Creative Director Richard 'Rahdo' Ham (incidentally featuring no less than eleven headshots of the man).

First I was like: WHOAH that's a giant interview. Then I realised that most of the page is just comments. I read it all nevertheless.

I needs to see it..... I needs it now.... Argghhhhhh.... The horror... Not knowing.... The terror.... Footage now I says!!! My precioooous.... [self slap].... grrrrr

On a more serious note, I hope you guys didn't screw up the accuracy of weapons when not using ironsights, to a point that's totally random to shoot without. What Rahdo said about it, that there are some guys in your office that don't use ironsights and they do ok is frightining to hear.

Whats wrong with using a cross hair instead of IS? I don't have a problem with either. However, I rather play with cross hair to get a more fast pace run and gun style instead of stopping to use IS.

Man this IS subject pops up everywhere. Both IS and Hip shooting are meant to be used in different situations.

""People on Ark come from all over the world, and we’re going to have an international cast of voice-actors, hopefully. Why not have Nigerian accents in there? Why are all games American voiced? Why not have different African accents, from different countries? And I should say that once you’ve created a character, he will be able to join either side.""

If it's implemented like in QW, I'm very ok with it. If it's like COD MW2 or Borderlands that's an issue for me. In those two games the spread is so high when you're not using ironsights it makes guns useless without it. Basically, you can't even rely on them even at close range.

get the hip fire accuracy perk and a more accurate gun on mw2.. i rarely scope now and when i do i get told off by the people in vent XD

Sorry man, I don't play that crap, just gave it as an example.

lol
please say you see the problem in what you just said :\
its actually pretty funny.

What problem, got it from torrents, didn't liked it, deleted it and never looked back. Well, I had a very bad taste in my mouth about this crap everyone thinks so high off. For reasons that I will never understand, but I guess this kinda explains it:

You gave it as an example... and you havent really played it.. how do you know its not right?
the issue is it is similair to qw with hipfire perk and a low recoil gun. Which you like...
You even went into detail about it.. which is why i assumed you had played it, i was just making a jovial comment about what i do and how its effected me, which is to make the recoil more like qw.
At close range you NEVER need the scope in cod. unless your sniping, you shouldnt be that close to them if your a sniper tho.

Its like saying you hate the taste of orange and you never actually ate an orange.. you had a banana and assumed it was the same.

please say you actually played borderlands...
I wont even go into the pirating thing.

Actually I'm saying I don't like oranges after tasting one orange. I didn't say I hate Call of Duty because I did play other games with id software graphic engines. Stop putting words in my mouth.

I did and the spread totally screwed up my experience, even if short.

Do you think I'm going to spend money on something without trying it first? You are so wrong.
Posted on 17 November, 2009 - 12:26
DoubleDigit, you couldn't have picked a more inappropriate place for admitting that you pirated a game. Please have another look at the forum rules and be aware that endorsing piracy is a bannable offense.
Posted on 17 November, 2009 - 13:40
Ok, won't do that again. Your forum, your rules. I can respect that.

To go back to the original issue. Can you guys talk more about this? How far from how it was implemented in quake wars is the spread system now?

Seems like everything is a hush hush about Brink. Not a whole lot of information flowing to the community beside the few ppl that got to see it at EE09. I hope they are not following ID Software trend of Wolfenstien. We all know how that piece of crapz turn out.
Posted on 17 November, 2009 - 14:47
This is what I don't understand, people have seen it already. Why continue to keep the secrecy about it?
Posted on 17 November, 2009 - 15:09
Check the "where's the brink hype machine?" thread to get an indication of why they're saving the juicy bits for later on. Regardless, it's up to bethesda what does and doesn't get released, so pester them.

A little more pressure here would not hurt

You must be kidding! There's a lot of information provided through countless interviews, forum replies and comments. Two examples would be the Q&A thread here in the forums and the one on crossfire. It's not like Wolfenstein at all.

What is concerning is this

Quote:
we have some stuff that will help gamepad and mouse aiming. It’s not an assist as such, but it means that once you’re following someone with your crosshairs, it becomes easier to follow them – “gravity wells”.
please say this wont be on the PC version, I don't want it to be like the lock on from Section 8 which just killed compeition. Please don't dub this game down.

A lot of people myself including regard any form of aim assist or lock on as near cheating it's not that far off an aimbot.

when I die i want to know the person killed me because he/she is a better gamer, because he/she out skilled me or was just generally lucky or conincidence was on his/her side not because he/she got an aim assist where the game did allt he work for them.

Otherwise great interview just don't mess the shooting/gameplay up.
