Rav 'ioli' Channa

HR Manager

Joining us from behind the eraser and ferrule of a colossal propelling pencil that blots out the sky yet fits conveniently in a hat-band or sock or sporran comes Rav 'ioli' Channa. Rav has had a major impact since alighting upon our roof, accompanied by a mephitic cohort of Aeolian bassoons and a sloth with a fez. She’s been hard at work ever since (take that, Fez Sloth!), educating us in the many and astounding ways of the Outside World/Real Life/Actual Proper Businesses and Clothed People. Apparently, in the land of Proper, very few personnel decisions are made by Ouija board or Trial by Moth, or by converting the subjects into a foam or coulis. This is news to us. Furthermore, we have been reluctantly persuaded that Performance Evaluations need not only be performed by multiple choice quiz or pugil fight, nor that recruitment is best managed by recourse to a process of Pointing and Hooting, however energetic. Not now, Fez Sloth, I'm busy.

Rav is constructed largely from loess, loam and talc, but several segments are covered in a factory-applied zimmerit cladding. Her hobbies include Telling Us So and Being Right But None Of Us Would Listen. Fez Sloth, seriously, stop it. She’s as tall as can be, and in her spare time, reconfigures the limbic system of France. She delights in skipping nimbly past our ranks of sessile Fug-Barnacles, and buttering things, as well as Ant and Dec (currently un-buttered, but it’s only a matter of time). She suffers from an entirely rational fear of commas. Yeah. No. It’s not a phobia. That’s an irrational fear and ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,AAAAAAAAAAH,,,,,,,,,,,,,HEL-,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,FEZ SLO- ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,BUH,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

Things You Were Too Afraid To Ask...

Every once in a while, we interrogate one of our own and put their answers up for all the world to see. Read on to find out more about what Rav does, how she ended up at Splash Damage, and more.

What do you do at Splash Damage?

I’m the Human Resources Manager here at Splash Damage. I work alongside the IT Manager and Office Manager and we basically provide the operational support for the day to day running of the studio.

I’m involved in a lot of recruitment work at the moment and alongside that I am compiling a number of policies and processes that will add further structure to the company as it grows.

From a strategic point of view, my focus will be on ensuring that the company goals are translated into the overall HR strategy. This will centre on adding value to the business while still retaining the friendly and relaxed culture here at Splash Damage.

Why did you want to work in the games industry and how did you get started?

I have to be honest here, I just fell into it by luck! From what I’ve learnt so far though it’s a varied and highly interesting industry and one I am very happy to be a part of.

Why did you join Splash Damage?

From my first interview here (and I’d like to point out I had to go through two tough ones!) I knew that I wanted to work at Splash Damage. I had done a lot of research into the company and it was small features such as reading the team profiles on the website that made me really excited about the type of people I’d be working with. I also was really impressed with the amount of awards that the studio had won which made me realise I’d be working in quite a special place.

Oh and also because the room I had my interview in had a massive dragon sculpture and toy models everywhere and pretty much beat any office I’d had an interview in which I thought was pretty cool!

What are the best and worst parts of your job?

I like challenges and my role is full of those so probably that’s the best part of my job. It’s about how I can make a positive impact on the company whilst still retaining the culture. I’ve also had the chance to get to know some seriously talented and interesting people so I’ve really enjoyed my time here so far!

The worst part of my job is dealing with tricky and often sensitive situations that arise in the workplace. It’s not an easy job but someone’s got to do it!

What was your first gaming experience?

Luckily I grew up with quite a computer game obsessed brother so used to play lots of games on our Atari console. Some of my first gaming experience and favourite Atari games were Buggy boy, Skull Duggerry (totally addictive) and Marble Madness (there were loads more but I can’t remember what they were!).

I also loved playing PC based games like Rick Dangerous and James Pond (and I’m sure there were more but once again I can’t remember the rest…)

What types of games do you like, and what's your favorite game of all time?

I like quite a variety of games. My brother turned me into quite a formidable opponent on the Tekken games so they are my all time favourite. I used to play lots of games on the Play station like Grand Theft Auto, V Rally, Gran Turismo etc. I was also groomed to be an ace defender on Pro Evolution Soccer but I am out of practice at the moment so shall decline any challenges! :)

These days I quite like anything Wii-related and I bet I could beat any of these boys at Wii fit Yoga!

Finally, what do you enjoy doing when you're not at work?

I’m really into my art work so I paint and draw quite a lot. I’m also a keen songwriter so am often composing songs on my piano. Other than that probably socialising somewhere with friends or family!

Captain obvious to the rescue: it's only a funny nickname when her name is written as Rav 'ioli' Channa.

And if you wouldn't find the hidden word, try some Italian cuisine for a change.

Yes but it would be too obvious... It is just to lure people.

Isn't that some propulsion thing-a-ma-jing used to steer spacecraft around?
I thought the name comes from its speed, which is measured in "floppies".

Ahem. I went a little off-topic here, so where's the art?
