Good at ETQW? Represent the US at the World Cyber Games!

wcg.pngThe grand final of the World Cyber Games 2010 is set to take place in Los Angeles at the end of the month, and with Quake Wars Online one of this year's promotional games, it'll feature in a special tournament of its own. This is set to be a multi-national affair, with six-player teams from three continents competing for several thousand dollars in prize money.

With the Asian and European player slots filled already, the organizers are now looking for a team from the United States to enter the fray. Quake Wars Online is of course heavily based on Enemy Territory: QUAKE Wars, and we've teamed up with the WCG to help find the team that should represent America at the Games.

The World Cyber Games 2010 Grand Finals are set take place from September 30 to October 3 at the Los Angeles Convention Center. Air travel and hotel will be provided by the WCG, and your entire team will also receive complimentary Quake Wars Online player accounts so you can start practicing and (re)learn the ins and outs of the game. Please note that all of your team's members must be legal residents of the United States to be eligible to enter.

How do you register your interest, you ask? Easy - just post the name of your team as well as the full names and nicknames of its players in the comments of this post. But be quick, the finals are just around the corner and there's only room for one team.

Lastly, if you have any questions about the event, please post them in the comments as well - the WCG folks will be checking in regularly to answer them.

Update: Teams wishing to participate must register their interest by Sunday, 12 September, 23:59 Eastern Time. After that, a qualifying tournament will take place to determine which team gets to go to the World Cyber Games Grand Finals. Stay tuned for more information.

Just to clarify, the WCG does not use "EU" representatives. I'm at work and the WCG link isn't working here just now (dunno why), but unless the rules are different for the QWO tourney, usually it's countries that are used, so something like UK or Germany, etc rather than just a European representative.

SplashDamage aren't the ones who have approached people to play, it's the WCG execs (who are a weird bunch btw :P) so don't give our good friends SD a hard time!

Thanks for the submissions so far!

I'm trying to confirm that at the moment.

Related, please note that teams are limited to six players, so your submissions should be also.

Lastly, I'm not sure who's playing for the other teams as we were not involved with that.

Edit: Figures I'd get a reply as soon as I hit the post button.

Word on substitutions is that they're allowed so long as they happen before plane tickets are bought. If you have to substitute after that, the substitute's airfare will be the responsibility of the team.

awww shucks, good thing I still play this game, which eliminates a big portion of the USA.

I suggest everyone wanting to play should enter Aristotle's 6v6 cup http://resurrectionleague.net/ (maybe he can bump up the schedule). I am about 10000000% sure that all NA teams are out of practice lawl. GL, those koreans looked like mean vehicle whores.

Korea's got nothing! Just make sure you sabotage their supply of kimchi + ramen at the event. They'll be incredibly malnourished as a result. I know from experience.

Q: Is this US only or NA???

Got another, video-filled update straight from our lovely WCG contact for anyone looking to get an idea of Quake Wars Online and the format used at the WCG finals. Sounds like Stopwatch is the order of the day - have a look below for the example matches:

Basic Game Rules
  • Teams take turns playing GDF and Strogg, once each on same map
  • The team finishing all three objectives faster is selected the winner
  • If the teams have the exact same time, then other methods are used to determine winner

Example Match 1
VoDs: http://kr.wcg.com/TV/TV_play.asp?key...0001&index=200 & http://kr.wcg.com/TV/TV_play.asp?key...0002&index=200
  • Objectives: GDF to build EMP scrambler, destroy sewer entrance, hack sewer controls
  • In the first game, the team playing the GDF side finished all three missions, but in the second, the GDF side could not even complete the first mission, thus the team playing the GDF side first was selected winner

Example Match 2
VoDs: http://kr.wcg.com/TV/TV_play.asp?key...0002&index=200 & http://kr.wcg.com/TV/TV_play.asp?key...0012&index=200
  • Missions: Strogg team to destroy signal scrambler generator, build mining laser, destroy bio-scanner
  • Same as the 1st match, the team playing the Strogg side first completed all three missions, while the opponent couldn’t finish even 1

So this will be played with QWO instead of ETQW? Maybe it'd be nice to know what the differences are apart from the localisation.
I wonder who from EU will play, and where they were recruited.
