gamescom 2010: Hands-on Impressions, Interviews, and a Freerunner

gamescom 2010 is underway over in Cologne and throughout this week, hundreds of gamers are getting to play Brink. Better yet, freerunner Daniel Ilabaca will be all over the Bethesda booth today to promote the game and even play the odd match.

We're delighted to see that GameStar / GamePro have nominated Brink for their Best of gamescom awards, in the Best Shooter category. The winners are chosen by their staff and will be announced later in the week.

Before we get to the rest of the Brink coverage we've had from the show so far, though, go check out Kotaku's great hands-on write-up. Here's a clip from that:

Brink is supposed to enable anyone, even bad gamers, to get that experience that normally only an elite Team Fortress 2 player might have, an experience of slick coordination in which everyone knows their role and slickly performs it. That bad player might as well have been me. And a year after Wedgwood told me Brink could deliver that opportunity, I tried the game - and - he was right.

Brink, ingeniously, works.

And now, without further ado, here's a round-up of Brink previews and interviews from gamescom:

Actually it looks like Kotaku's bespoke dashes tripped it up. Fixed now.

I don't know if this has been picked up in any of the Gamercon threads, but VG247 has a great interview with Paul.

While I have been vocal about my dissatisfaction with aspects of the marketing of Brink, all decisions related to the game design continue to be BANG on.

VG247: Brink was recently delayed into 2011, which is kind of a bummer, because I want to buy it. Could you explain why you felt like the game needed a little extra time in the oven?

Paul Wedgwood: We’re not adding any additional things to it. Essentially, we’re gonna spend longer in the beta phase. Because it’s a really ambitious game, and now that people can see what we’ve done with weapons – the number of weapons, the number of weapon modifications, the number of abilities, the number of items and gadgets – they can see the interrelations between those many components sets up some very specific balancing challenges. And for Brink, we want to make sure people enjoy playing months after they’ve started playing – or years after they’ve started playing! I think in order for us to achieve that well, we want to have the best possible period of balancing and polishing.

From your mouth to other developers' ears! I once again relax in my decision to pre-order 4 copies.
