Brink - An Update from Splash Damage

Now that Brink has been released in North America, we've had hundreds of thousands of people create their character and join the civil war for the Ark. Seeing the game out there being played and enjoyed by so many is very exciting for us, and we've been hopping into multiplayer matches ourselves to get in on the action with all of you.

Before we dive into this blog update, we'd like to extend a huge thank you to everyone who's been sharing their feedback about Brink. We keep a close eye on what all of you have been saying about the game and wanted to give you an update on what's been happening on our end:

Xbox 360 Update

We've now put up our first game update on the Xbox 360, which went live at launch. It addresses several of the issues raised in some of the early US reviews of the game and brings with it some major improvements.

Most importantly, this update significantly reduced texture loading times thanks to improved hard-drive caching. It also improves client prediction when playing online – in other words, you'll experience much less “rubber banding” in multiplayer. We've also fixed several issues that could lead to the game freezing, and resolved an issue where Brink would insist on playing all of the training videos rather than just the introductory one.
If you've not yet got the update, simply restart the game while your Xbox is connected to the internet.

We've also been getting new reports of lag when playing online, especially in matches with lots of human players. We're all huge multiplayer fans here at the office and we know how important a lag-free online experience is. We're urgently investigating this issue and seeing what we can do to improve things in that area. Stay tuned.

PlayStation 3 Update

The PlayStation 3 version of Brink has also received its first game update late Monday. It incorporates the same prediction fixes as in the Xbox 360 version, resulting in a smoother online performance. In addition, host migration has seen several improvements as well, and we've fixed an issue where the Ability Wheel sometimes displayed the wrong class abilities. This update also fixes several potential freezes and, like the Xbox 360 version, now only plays the introductory tutorial video at the initial prompt, rather than all of them.

Even though PSN is currently offline, you'll still be able to get this update if your console is connected to the internet. Once PSN is back online, we'll closely monitor player feedback for this platform.

PC Update

On the PC side, we're pleased to report that we've put together our first game update, bringing two immediate improvements to Brink:

It greatly enhances the crash reports we're getting through Steam, with more detailed information coming our way from now on. While this doesn't sound very exciting for you as a player, it's really useful for the Brink team as it'll allow us to track down the underlying issues much more quickly and work on fixes for them – particularly stability issues relating to compatibility.

This update also fixes an issue where closing the game before getting to the character selection screen can corrupt your character data and make it unusable. Until the game update comes out, we strongly recommend not shutting Brink down during start-up to avoid this issue altogether.

Better yet, this update is already on the way to Steam and you'll get it automatically through the Steam client as soon as it's out.

In other PC news, we've also been working closely with the guys over at Bethesda Softworks to identify and solve any hardware compatibility issues that people have been reporting. For the AMD graphics card owners out there, make sure you've installed the latest AMD video drivers as that will solve a fair few of the visual and performance issues out there. Similarly, if you have an NVIDIA card and are experiencing issues with the game, make sure you've got the latest NVIDIA video drivers installed.

The next game update for the PC version is already in the works, and includes a fix for the FOV issue some of you have been reporting on the forums, among several other things. We'll have more information to share on that soon.

Statistics Site

We've also seen a few questions about the Brink statistics website and what you should be doing with the VIP code that's displayed in the game. When the Brink statistics site launches on www.BrinkTheGame.com, you'll be able to register a profile on there and can then use the VIP code from inside the game to link your Xbox 360 gamertag/PSN ID/Steam ID to it. More details on all of that soon!

Lastly, please do keep your Brink feedback coming. It's really useful to us and we really do check all of it. We have teams at Splash Damage and Bethesda dedicated full time to resolving any issues you discover.
That's it for now - thanks for reading and see you online in Brink!

Posted on 11 May, 2011 - 20:03
So no ETA on when this game actually becomes playable on ATI cards? Great
Posted on 11 May, 2011 - 20:04
Good stuff guys. Paul, thanks for responding to me and thanks for the updates. I hope this will sort out a fair few of the comments in the forums. Something Mr E Mentioned in my thread is whether you could have a simple sticky listing known errors and status. Not ideal in terms of marketing, I understand, but in terms of community, it would be a huge leap forward in terms of pro-active customer management :) :penguin: <-- Comon....it IS a penguin :)

I love you SD <3

Thanks Locki and it's great to see Steam being leveraged to drop patches quickly. Hopefully we'll be over the bugs and onto last minute features really soon.
Posted on 11 May, 2011 - 20:14
Please, any word about this: It's my only issue with this game. Me and just about any Radeon HD 4000 users have this same problem

Thanks for the update Paul + team, always appreciated :) Roll on Friday, dag nammit.

As stated in Paul's update, we're looking at various hardware issues to provide fixes for them. I'm unable to provide an ETA or a specific list of what's being fixed at the moment, but rest assured that your concerns are being heard.
Posted on 11 May, 2011 - 20:25
I don't think I have missed it but I have started Brink up three times today and I have not seen a new update. Are you sure it is out there, ready?
Posted on 11 May, 2011 - 20:30
Pez - There are a bunch of us at SD desperate for the FOV fix too! I'm an old-school fov 110 q1tf guy myself... I can see how we missed it though... It's specific to SMART and worked fine in our final test (offline!) but was unfortunately committed as a networked CVAR - it's already fixed, but couldn't be tested in time for this update... Won't be long though!
Me and just about any Radeon HD 4000 users have this same problem
Waaaggh - I had the same thing in Tribes 2 a decade ago and it drove me crazy... Super annoying to own a good card and get performance or graphical glitches (same too for Hailey - I'm so sorry!). No excuses! I'll ask for news when I get in tomorrow...
Posted on 11 May, 2011 - 20:36
Sweet Paul. Not dissing, hope you understand. Infact, I'm really hoping I can give you enough grief that all of this is fixed in time for 9.00am Friday when I pick it up in Maidenhead :D - Sent you a PM about a completely outrageous non topic :D I meant to ask actually, how many/much of the CFG/Cvar is editable - or editable from your side?. I've seen a few re-jigged programmes based around W:ET being released to adjust these to increase frame rate and reduce lag. Legit? Or hold out? Damit...also, one more..lol...Is there any possible chance of manipulation of the display data on the screen - or even changing the transparency within options of it?

What about the issue everyone is concerned about regarding the lack of a lobby for multiplayer (on the Xbox 360, in my case)? If you guys could please fill us in on what you plan to do about that, itd be greatly appreciated even if you just let us know whether or not you ARE going to do something about it (which we really, really, really, REALLY want you to do i cannot stress that enough). My friends and I dont even bother going into Public matches because most of the time we cant all get in. Thats kinda lame. On the bright side, im loving this game in most all other aspects, and I look forward to future updates and the statistics site. I have faith in you guys, you seem like a great group! Thanks, guys! -Ryan
Posted on 11 May, 2011 - 20:48
Can you please fix 30fps lock in singleplayer while you are at it?
Posted on 11 May, 2011 - 20:54
As a recent poster above me stated could you please comment about your plans for multiplayer lobbies on Xbox 360? Right now it is extremely frustrating when trying to play with your friends. I brought my whole clan over from Monday Night Combat and we can't even get into games together.

First off I want to say after a couple days of playing brink, I went from liking the game to loving it. I had high hopes for this game and they delivered for the most part. One thing though is the AI. If you are trying to play coop with 2 or 3 people your team mates are stupid as hell. Medics will run in to save you and get gunned down or they just stand next to you until the die. The enemy AI is spot on and destroys you later on in the campaign. They drop turrets and change classes as needed and so on, but not your AI team mates. They never take objectives or even try. They are more concerned with the command posts, which I understand their value, but come on. If someone is taking the main objective thats where everyone else should be. The enemy AI is awesome and it is tough. I hope they patch team AI so it's not so frustrating. Thanks for all of your work SD. I love the game, hate my teams AI

Fix the Lag pleassse SD you guys rule, dont let the haters discourage you. Your game is new and unique, solid and challenging. Just fix the lag and you'll have me hooked

(comment shamelessly cross-posted from bethblog.com) im happy to say the stability and performance of Brink have been good under Windows 7: no crashes, and the only performance issue has been very occasional stuttering that may be another process. what has not been good is the learning curve. i am no stranger to objective-based games, yet even after watching all the tutorial videos the actual flow of gameplay still takes some getting used to. the game tries very hard to help, dangling that 1000xp video, but the most useful thing was the first challenge. IF YOU ARE BAFFLED BY BRINK, PLAY THE FIRST CHALLENGE. in fact, i believe the game should shelve that video and offer you the 1000xp to play the first challenge, renaming it a tutorial. a video just cant get across how fast a Brink match moves or how to get stuff done without fumbling on the (numerous) controls for five minutes. i stumbled through the first couple campaign missions, confused and annoyed, and then i played the first Be Objective challenge and then i started to have fun. seriously, force people to play Be Objective! the other really, really frustrating part is playing the campaign with unscripted, AI-driven NPCs. these guys are disastrously disorganized, and it is not much fun to have to rely on them. just about the only thing they seem good for is reviving and the occasional buff, if they arent scattered all over the map. if im playing solo, the AIs should just form up around me and not do anything else. dont run off, dont get in my way, just stick by me. ultimately, Brink (or any other game) is not very fun when you depend on an AI NPC. IF BRINK SOLO IS PISSING YOU OFF, STOP AND PLAY IT CO-OP. im not even going to attempt solo-play of the other higher-difficulty objective challenges, and will go straight to co-op. i know that it will just be too annoying and frustrating to watch the AIs be worthless while i do everything. ok, all that having been said, im starting to like it. the sound is good, it looks great, and the pitch of battle can be exciting. ive been having fun alternating between Sec and Res missions, as you see how the conflict is ratcheting up from both sides including the misunderstandings and fog of war that unnecessarily exacerbate conflicts. i can see that multiplayer with friends on VoIP has the potential for seriously epic battle shenanigans. they didnt make it very easy to like, but maybe thats a bit of a good thing to keep up the quality of multiplayer competition. you cant really get by as a noob in Brink. - emilio

I did not praise Toyota because they replaced my guess pedal. So I will not do it here either. The few things mentioned are the tip of the iceburg as far as issues go. No I do not expect any launch to be perfect. However when a game has the benefit of not having to really create a campaign I expect the quality of the product to be better than those who offer both a detailed singleplayer and multiplayer. Especially when they charge the same amount for it. I enjoy the game, but its not nearly as impressive as it was made out to be.One example being the AI which was touted as being groundbreaking in actuality is more like a blind folded child trying to hit a pinata. Hope all gets fixed soon because with a large community the game has the potential to be great.
Posted on 11 May, 2011 - 21:32
Wow you selfish people. The game has been out just over a day and your already complaining. I haven't even got the game yet (released 13th may in UK) and I will not even be able to access the online features due to the PSN being down until later this month. When I get the game, I will not have access to those features. Sure, I hate laggy games and buggy errors but at least you have the game and are enjoying it at times. Be gratefull for what you have.
Posted on 11 May, 2011 - 21:33
^^ Here Here. I've even seen people already asking for more DLC...I mean, for the love of god!!! lol
Posted on 11 May, 2011 - 21:39
Great news!!! About the AI, if i remember correctly, in W:ET when you played with bots and they got stuck, you needed to give them some voice commands to jump start them to do the job/objectives/support. I do not think it was in vanilla, maybe a mod? It's been so long since I've played against bots. Maybe you could do something about that so the player could command his team. As for the enemy AI, make it more harder :D (joking)
Posted on 11 May, 2011 - 21:45
Thanks Locki!! I cannot tell you how awesome it feels to have a developer who actually "understands" us PC players to that level. It's great to hear you talk about the FOV thing, I was in particular concerned about that when I first got into the game. Anyway, cheers on your launch and I hope everything continues on smoothly! Can't wait to see what you've got (if anything) this year at Quakecon as well, have enjoyed your presentations in 09 and 10.
Posted on 11 May, 2011 - 21:48
Paul! I'm loving the game and I love you m8! I have not spoken to you in a while and hope all is well in your life. You and your team have put out another amazing game.

When you pay 40 quid for a game you don't expect to be met with glaring bugs that shouldn't have made it passed the Alpha testing phase of the game. People have every right to complain. I'm glad to have some communication from SD but they already have a lot to make up for. Hope they make good.
Posted on 11 May, 2011 - 21:51
This is great news, exelent way to show your customers that you care about your product

don't act like this is the first time something like this happens; sadly is how things work in the gaming industry nowadays. At least SD is working to fix those issues just one day after the release unlike otther developers than take months to release a patch
Posted on 11 May, 2011 - 22:18
Thanks....I think. Ever since some kind of update today, it lags, if I dont move my mouse its fine, as soon as I move my mouse it chops. This is an amazing game, it worked fine before the update..
Posted on 11 May, 2011 - 22:23
My best wishes to the dev team working their asses off to get those issues ironed out, and may the flow be with you.

I'm not. Excuse me if I expect a quality product that I can play. And just because some developers make this a reality in the gaming industry doesn't mean every single one of them does. And it doesn't mean that people should stand for it when it does happen.
Posted on 11 May, 2011 - 22:37
I'm very upset on how the game came out >:( I have been waiting for a year, SPLASHED it all over my FB page and told EVERYONE about it. To find out the A.I. in the game are dumb as a rock. Please tell me SOMETHING is being done about it? I find the A.I. is fine for your opponents but that teammates are dumb. :(
Posted on 11 May, 2011 - 22:44
Sadly, I don't have the game yet, but how does the AI react to voice commands or general "quick chat" commands?
Posted on 11 May, 2011 - 22:47
I like how the SD guys are happy to come in and accept praise for cleaning up their mess, but as soon as someone asks about the glaring omission of a lobby they're nowhere to be seen. I'm starting to think they won't add a lobby, but don't want to comment on the issue because it'll hurt sales.

So far so good. Game is smooth and so far no problems on my aging Radeon 4870 with 11.2 Catalyst drivers, maxed out graphics settings with AA enabled.
Posted on 12 May, 2011 - 00:51
Wonderful update! Thank you! Any word on if it would be possible to add in traditional lobbies and parties to satisfy the masses?
Posted on 12 May, 2011 - 01:27
There's also an issue in a map (the one with the oil can and the plane) where many players, if not all, don't have sound except for some environmental beeps and stuff. It works well for like 30 secs then after that it's pretty much nothing. Very hard to play. :/
Posted on 12 May, 2011 - 06:05
The game is simply amazing, with a few updates and a few more maps or an editor for PC version this could be a masterpeice. Anyways, just wanted to say I am having a ton of fun and that this game really is a breath of fresh air! Keep up the good work and hope to see this series grow! Loving the teamwork needed in this game!
Posted on 12 May, 2011 - 06:07
Wow, I knew the developers were probably already hard at work on updates, but this was ridiculously fast! grats SD, I'm glad you're taking initiative to polish the game.
Posted on 12 May, 2011 - 06:10
Fix the OpenGL crash thing that's caused by using high resolutions. I want my 1440x900 back please. Also, might be good to take a look at multiplayer optimizations because when I'm playing online my fps is all over the damn place compared to singleplayer.

i like such philosophy, first u make a game that not balanced and optimised, then after release u work as hard as u can to remove all issues, showing how u care and all will be ok, so simple.
Posted on 21 May, 2011 - 17:49
Kinjal, you base your statement on which facts? Go troll another forum please.
Posted on 21 May, 2011 - 17:53
There is a lot to fix. If you guys fix what a majority of people are asking (all the same requests) this game will be around for awhile.
Posted on 21 May, 2011 - 18:00
Kinjal, you base your statement on which facts?
Facts, oh i dont know, i think it was not their fault that game is running 30 fps or less not their fault that game have not balanced maps, and i see full holds on the same objectives over and over again not their fault that light bodytype win 9/10 gun fights vs medium/heavy not their fault that there are no first person spec in game not their fault that "f" is not working on PC not their fault that there was no beta realy all blame must be on ....i dont know sumbody
Posted on 21 May, 2011 - 18:10
I'm happy about this but why haven't you gotten rid off the AI restrictions on xbox and ps3 yet? You did it in three days for the pc! It can't be that hard to give the same update to xbox.
