Wolfenstein: ET Master Server Back In Action

Following the outage earlier in the year, the folks over at id Software have rebuilt the Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory Master Server, and everything is now back online and working. If you've got the game installed, it'll pick up the new Master Server automatically. No changes required on your end.

On a side note, we'd also like to throw a big thank at community member Paul for providing an interim master while the official Master Server was being rebuilt.

See you online!

Always news like this is good, just a shame it took so long :(. The downloads for ET have gone down a lot. ET was 7th most downloaded game on a few websites, it's not in top 10 any more.

Still curious why it did take soo long..

My thoughts exactly! My clan will be able to grow now! Question: Does this update automatically go onto the server-side of work? It says there are no updates needed for clients, but do I need to add anything to my config to make sure it is picked up by the Master List?

As far as I know, this is a like-for-like replacement of the old master server in terms of functionality so no changes should be needed to make your server appear in the list.

Thanks to everyone involved in the effort to get this list back up. Including those working on various resolutions in response to this. I personally want to thank Rudi for taking the time to make a host service, Harekin and Schnoog for finally considering updating their installer and website. And everyone that said "yes" to the project I was working on. It was a long time...too long, and there was a lot of time invested and arguably wasted as a result of these shenanigans. Something that could have been prevented...but that's life. Let's also recognize the small clans and owners out there, clinging on to dead servers for several months.

Guys, just a note if you're using my proxy service... You do not need to uninstall it, that is the whole point of the service. If id software's master server is online, it will use that, if not, it will use etmaster.net. The whole point of the proxy (rather than hosts file modification) is resilience, so if one goes down, it will switch to the other. If anything, I'd recommend that you get others to install it in case this happens again any time soon.. Better safe than sorry ;)

For those who once installed Rudis proxy service and at some point deinstalled it again, you might wonder why your masterlist is not working ;) Here a short explanation what you must do to make your list work again:
Simply open up your hosts file (open Notepad as Administrator, type '%WINDIR%\System32\drivers\etc' into the address bar, change the file type to 'All Files' and open the file named 'hosts') and delete the line:
etmaster.idsoftware.com 127.0.0.1
Try it with your firewall turned off if a homegrown server. Also make sure you are checking the right list 2.55/2.60b?

...are there no differents ? Thanks all who works on it.

Yes in theory, but some people may not have updated their servers. It defaults to id software because, in theory, that should be more stable ;)

Thank you very much. *Still it was too long offline..* See you.!

My server is through Game Servers. I just need to know what needs to be put in my config file.
Posted on 29 March, 2012 - 06:37
@Avery i have 4 servers running and 2 of these servers not are showing in the list too i think its not related to the server config. i know my server config is right but i really dont know why the hell its not showing up in the master list if im not wrong the server config only need is have this line - sv_master1 "etmaster.idsoftware.com" - to shows into the master server list
Posted on 29 March, 2012 - 14:42
Well noticed sometimes some servers appears sometimes not. Maybe the client does not receive all the data requested to master server? There could be some loss like packets?
Posted on 29 March, 2012 - 17:36
Avery I am curious, is this on 2.60b list? I have 3 servers on the 2.55 list and they have been working 24/7 since the list came back. Did you click on "server name" and put them in alphabetic order, then search? I once had a problem where changes in networking at gamesevers.com bumped my server down from its typical spot on the list.

open Notepad as Administrator, type '%WINDIR%\System32\drivers\etc' into the address bar, change the file type to 'All Files' and open the file named 'hosts'
But as I've already stated, there is no need at all to remove this software.

Is it this one ? => 109.70.149.12:27930 Can't find this one either. In the config you must add this:
set sv_master1 "etmaster.idsoftware.com"
Make sure, when you start up your server, you check where it is sending the heartbeat. Check for a message like:
Sending heartbeat to
in serverlog. It will show you where it is sending the heartbeat to.

Yes, it's there. I queried etmaster.idsoftware.com (192.246.40.60) with an external application. If it does not show up, then your client for some reason filters them, or your client queries a totally different ms. The server shows definitely up, it is even almost the first i get from id's MS

Hi badman, could you pls ask again about master server for RtCW (wolfmaster.idsoftware.com), still no respons from within game. It's routed to zerowing.idsoftware.com, dunno if that's were they started up the master server again.

As said in the quote. When for some reason you removed the proxy service, you have to remove the line in the hosts file as well. Otherwise your requests will get looped back to localhost and there 'starve'. When you receive servers however, that shouldn't be the case. Ids Masterserver and the Paul Mastersever are also showing almost exactly the same amount of servers (if not, it is exact the same list, because its synched or something, didn't check that, must write a programm first to see if one sends maybe a different set of servers. Having both is by the way additional and unneccessary amount of traffic. The synching especially puts burden on ids MS). The difference between Pauls MS and IDs MS is: Pauls MS sends about 1017 bytes per message, that is more than a hundred servers. IDs MS sends about 719 bytes per message, that is around 100 servers. Paul sends like around 300 servers in 2 big packages, and one small. ID sends 3 smaller packages, and then just one last, very small one. Just for those interested ;)

He hasn't removed the proxy service so this is not an issue really, most people I've spoken to have followed my advice to keep the proxy service running, because there is zero benefit (only negatives) in removing it. There will be the same amount of servers from Paul's or id's main as they are synced up (Paul's reads from id's).

I can't find my server on the list. My (client) console indicates: etmaster.idsoftware.com resolved to 192.246.40.60:27951, which is ok. Also server console says that's resolved and etmaster.idsoftware.com responds to my server's heartbeats:
17:01:01.500914 IP next.wolfet.pl.27960 > etmaster.idsoftware.com.27950: UDP, length 31 0x0000: 0015 17b8 c69f 0015 1775 1d5c 0800 4500 .........u.\..E. 0x0010: 003b 0000 4000 4011 dffa c121 b063 c0f6 .;..@.@....!.c.. 0x0020: 283c 6d38 6d2e 0027 5af0 ffff ffff 6865 ( next.wolfet.pl.27960: UDP, length 23 0x0000: 0015 1775 1d5c 0015 17b8 c69f 0800 4500 ...u.\........E. 0x0010: 0033 0000 4000 3111 ef02 c0f6 283c c121 .3..@.1.....(<.! 0x0020: b063 6d2e 6d38 001f d1ab ffff ffff 6765 .cm.m8........ge 0x0030: 7469 6e66 6f20 4554 4b4f 7041 6869 6d41 tinfo.ETKOpAhimA 0x0040: 69 i 17:01:01.648075 IP next.wolfet.pl.27960 > etmaster.idsoftware.com.27950: UDP, length 306 0x0000: 0015 17b8 c69f 0015 1775 1d5c 0800 4500 .........u.\..E. 0x0010: 014e 0000 4000 4011 dee7 c121 b063 c0f6 .N..@.@....!.c.. 0x0020: 283c 6d38 6d2e 013a 5c03 ffff ffff 696e ( For clarity: I do not use Paul's masterserver, I have no hosts changed, binaries or else. Posted on 3 April, 2012 - 16:21
Can you give your server IP? Would be glad to check if it is displayed here.
Posted on 3 April, 2012 - 16:24
Thanks for your reply Mateos. I think that (most likely) you'll be able to see my server on the list. The thing is that my results are filtered and I can't figure out why. I am afraid that my server is in these filtered results. Of course I can reinstall the game and clear the game-specific files, configuration and else, but in this way I will not find out what the problem is. I want to know it, mainly to help those who have encountered the same problem. But anyway, you could see the address in the log. address: next.wolfet.pl.27960 hostname: WolfET.pl NeXT TZAC Edit: I've searched the forums and I found this: http://www.splashdamage.com/forums/showthread.php/12532-Serverlist-filtered-by-what - the same problem, six years before. Looks like this is one of those things, to which I did not pay attention never before. But still I can't find my server on the list.
Posted on 3 April, 2012 - 16:37
I don't see it... I guess you have already checked this thread with its recommendation(s) about the server config?
Posted on 3 April, 2012 - 18:15
I have the same problem as c0m4r. I can't find my server on the list. address:31.186.83.60:26005 hostname: !PoLsKiE-PiWo0! PRO
Posted on 4 April, 2012 - 16:23
c0m3r, forgot to ask if you have your server in 2.55? And you oleczek7, before I start ET just to check? x)
Posted on 4 April, 2012 - 16:26
Now I have on 2.60b. I had server on 2.55 and he was on the list.
Posted on 4 April, 2012 - 16:33
Can't see it, and I no more see Zero one, only Sniper and Pub... Well as pointed it isn't new, but it's strange :/ Edit: The servers not showing are seen "DOWN" by trackers. But Xfire still ping them...
Posted on 4 April, 2012 - 16:36
I'll never understand where people see "3" in my nickname. It's "4" :) In the answer to your question Mateos, I would say that maybe I'm not perfect, but I really know how to configure the server, because I have ten years of experience with game servers. You can see in the log presented by me that my server is communicating with master server properly so it should be visible on the list,
But Xfire still ping them...
As well as HLSW and Trackbase.
Posted on 5 April, 2012 - 10:35
Sorry, maybe because I read "Comer" >.> Usually nicks with numbers are made from a word to my mind, that's could be why I and maybe some made this mistake :/ Maybe modders who are familiar with the source code can find something, or could it be on MS side? No clue about this :/
Posted on 5 April, 2012 - 16:16
Made another scan. I do not know how trustworthy my tool is yet, but i think it gives good results. I scanned 3 IPs, Protocol 84. 193.33.176.99:27960 // shows up on Paul's Masterserverlist 31.186.83.60:26005 // shows up not at all 91.121.141.217:27960 // shows up on id's masterserver I scanned 20:39 (CEST), protocol 84. Scan gave me 432 servers from id masterserver and 311 servers from paul alternative masterserver. edit2: i removed the output, some signs are not accepted.
Posted on 5 April, 2012 - 19:46
My server is not displayed on Paul's masterserverlist because I have deleted the command - sv_master5 "master0.etmaster.net" from my configuration.
Posted on 5 April, 2012 - 20:46
I have no clue to be honest. The general pattern i get though is that empty servers get filtered by id masterserver. They just do not get sent. I see that if there is at least 1 bot or 1 human player, the server will be sent again by id masterserver. Otherwise not. It could take a while though until id masterserver realizes that the server changed from completely empty to player/human connected. I compared now more than 20 servers and this seems to be the pattern. I am quite tired though and did not want to compare like a hundred O_O If you find one on the list down which does not fit the pattern, then tell me and my theory is nullified. Whatever helps!! It would be also very useful for me to help me debug my tool ^^ Some addresses seem buggy, i do not know why. 91.121.141.217:27960 disappeared again from the list. edit2: actually i am thinking too complicated ^^ Just open the et client and browse the list and you see that there are only "crowded servers" ^^ (with maybe the one or other exception). I have none of my filters checked for that. So that means if you ever have an empty server (no bots/humans), then it will not appear in your ingame server browser list, because id masterserver does not send it. Unless they change behaviour tomorrow, this is not going to change i guess. Remains to be found out what the filtered servers on client side are and if they are valid. Maybe these are ping > 999. I doubt that normal servers are getting filtered. If you get one from id, then this one should be displayed. The thing is. When you received the servers from the masterserver, your et client then probes each and individual, received server, to get stats like ping (see getInfo if i remember correct). If you probe a server which is not valid, then it will get filtered.

Thanks for help acQu. You have right. When server is empty it does not show it on the list, but when I went in on the server I saw it already on the list.
Posted on 6 April, 2012 - 09:13
Thought so :)
Posted on 6 April, 2012 - 11:27
To compare, maybe use a program like WinMerge? I dunno if it can do some magics with random lists though :/

I notice the same, thats why i cant see my etpro server on list sometimes when it is empty its not shows up on the list. That is a shame, servers without bots running right now will be out of the master server list, why the hell this list are acting like that if the default WET released by SD not has bots included??? Wel i cant understand this mistery of the master server list, seems ID are a bunch of ********* guys, and after see this i not will buy anything from ID software anymore.
Posted on 6 April, 2012 - 16:49
It may be like this since the beginning, and it isn't a matter of bots but empty or not server it seems ^^' Maybe (Maybe, yes), BadMan could ask for it? ^^'
Posted on 6 April, 2012 - 17:08
It may be like this since the beginning
Was wondering this as well. In ET installation under ./Docs/Help/Manual/default.htm Scroll down and find the pic with the server list. I can see some empty servers there :)
Posted on 6 April, 2012 - 22:56
I thought you mean some empty servers where filtered out, but not all... All? o.o
Posted on 6 April, 2012 - 23:29
Yes, all empty servers are "filtered" on 2.6b. EDIT here a picture of my ingame client server browser.
Posted on 7 April, 2012 - 06:12
hey guys, just wondering, ur saying that servers which are empty (0 players) are not shown on the masterlist or?
Posted on 7 April, 2012 - 07:27
Yes. Question is if it was always like that. EDIT or maybe something is wrong with my whole PC configuration and i am the only one who does not receive empty servers from id master.
Posted on 7 April, 2012 - 07:38
i can see like 120-130 servers also, so its probably not just you :D but im happy cuz masterlist is back nd my server still lives :D
Posted on 7 April, 2012 - 08:22
Same here... And I'm sure in the past there were empty ETmain servers listed for instance.
Posted on 7 April, 2012 - 09:12
Yes, empty server were listed before (unless you filtered them out with the checkbox). Not related but the master server for RtCW is still not reponding.
Posted on 8 April, 2012 - 03:31
Hi all For information, my 2.55 list shows empty servers: V55 PS: double-clik on the picture or open it in separate window (it is not truncated)
Posted on 8 April, 2012 - 07:43
Yes. 2.55 clients get empty servers. 2.6b clients do not get empty servers it seems. 2.55 clients send probably a different query to masterserver. Likely it asks for empty servers also. EDIT1 yes, might be true. On 2.6b, with different protocol, i get now almost 1000 servers. Before it was always around 400. I get also empty servers now. EDIT2 Here a pic with modified 2.6b client (console says 2.7a, but it is actually 2.6b, just bit modified and with some debug output). It shows also empty servers now. I just slightly modified the protocol for that. EDIT3 so, 2.55 clients send a different query to masterserver. The masterserver just responds to the queries he gets. If the request is to just show crowded servers, he will answer with that.
Posted on 8 April, 2012 - 09:23
Now I can see one server which is empty. How ? I don't know :D. http://img.7pics.info/shot0000_db1.jpg

Very cool, W:ET master server is back! Please start working on the ET:QW master server!!!!!!

If you wanna check wether a server is listed @ masterserver or not, simply try this new wolffiles-feature: http://wolffiles.de/services/masterlist/ Currently 1239 server are listed.
Posted on 9 April, 2012 - 10:15
I guess the server where not empty and when you received it, it was? :P
Posted on 9 April, 2012 - 11:35
Indeed. This is one of the trollservers i mentioned :) Id masterserver should probe servers with getinfo request about every 5 minutes. So there is small timewindow where it happens to not know that the server went empty.
Posted on 9 April, 2012 - 12:07
sorry guys, but 1 question, full servers arent shown also?
Posted on 9 April, 2012 - 19:19
It's like the MS had the option "Don't show empty/full servers" checked...

+1 at your new service!!

Happened to me as well; I guess it's a kind of protection, but I can't see who would abuse this on these forums :/
Posted on 10 April, 2012 - 11:35
Is it this one ? => 109.70.149.12:27930 Can't find this one either.
Sorry for the late response. Nope, not that server anymore! lol. We switched to a US server and the new IP is 66.55.149.127:27960
Posted on 10 April, 2012 - 15:30

Mateos. Yes this is the case. It depends how you query the masterserver and what string you send. It has option to give you only those servers who have at least 1 player connected and doesn't send you the empty ones, or you can also ask it for the empty ones. The string goes something like "blabliblub query gimme dem servers with protocol newb empty full". If it shows only full servers ? I don't know. I have seen 24/24 servers or 32/32 servers. If it goes something like 42/40, then it seems not to show. Question remains: why is the 2.6b client buggy in that regard. Why does it ask only for the "crowded" ones. Maybe a bug or a feature.
Posted on 14 April, 2012 - 12:20
Bump! Is it only me or the browser doesn't show full/empty servers on 2.60b list regardless of your filter settings?
Posted on 27 January, 2013 - 20:25
It has been pointed when the MS was down by Chris I think, or acQu; But already pointed here at the said moment :) Edit: The post just up yours ^^'
Posted on 27 January, 2013 - 20:55
Why would you still use that annoying ingame bworser? It is far easier to search for your server at Splatterladder. And if you don't want to copy the server-ip and connect to the server via console /connect [ctrl + v] you can even install the sl.gamelauncher and simply connect from the homepage... Just saying //EDIT: Another huge plus: you see whether the players are bots or not before connecting...
Posted on 27 January, 2013 - 20:57
@Dragonji: yes, 2.6b clients will not display servers, which are empty or full. Reason is the query clients send out. I also didn't notice for years ^_^ And i am sure there was hardly anyone realizing this. Just sayin'. There is also a fix somewhere at ET:L, written by the great master of the universe himself, guess who it is :P ... It is fairly easy to provide ui code and such. This along with hardcoded ui menus would make a good patch i think haha

Yeah, I saw that but I was just thinking that "bug" appeared when id restored the masterlist and hasn't been fixed yet.

I don't use this in-game browser :D. It's just that I'm a server admin and I want players to see my server(s).

After master server came back, True Combat: Elite mod has only seen servers with players in the serverlist. So all empty servers are invisible. Everyone has this problem and it has really decreased the already little amount of players in this awesome mod. Who I should contact to ask what they have changed with the master server to cause this bug and if they could fix this?
Posted on 11 October, 2013 - 17:24
This is 2.60b client bug.
Posted on 11 October, 2013 - 17:44
It didn't happen in TC:E 0.49b before master server update. Hmm.
Posted on 11 October, 2013 - 18:25
Yes, well .. i wouldn't call it bug (i think it was added with intention to the client from update 2.55 to 2.6b to have that one buffer not overflow :> and decrease network traffic from the internetz and the master server in general i guess). But yeah. Basically the link i posted above explains it all. It is a small change in the query to the master server in client ui code. So only updated clients will see empty servers, not updated clients will remain the same. There is always a possibility though to contact id masterserver team and modify their master server. It would not be too much work. Basically the change requires to disable the options in querys. 2.6b client basically says: "give me servers which are populated". 2.55 client says: give me all servers. So you could make masterserver ignore that specific request and have send complete masterlist sent anyway. This would make it so empty servers appear on clients even if they are not updated.
Posted on 11 October, 2013 - 18:36
Client ui code? So maybe this could be fixed by changing ui scripts in the pk3 files of True Combat: Elite? Or is this code somewhere else? TC:E is closed source :( I'll take a look in the ui scripts.
Posted on 11 October, 2013 - 20:11
I just noticed, the link above is broken. Client Fix: http://www.dev.etlegacy.com/projects/etlegacy/repository/revisions/52ac4aad44a17ce50059b188dff8f1c1155d0d9f Related discussion: http://www.dev.etlegacy.com/issues/37#change-101 I think it is not possible to change this in ui scripts. The string is hardcoded from what i remember. It was long ago. I wouldn't look at ui scripts :)

Thanks. So is it yet in the current version of ET:L (2.71?)? I've tried running tcetest with it but empty servers are still not visible.

It's only in their mod code (think from 2.71 on). So if you took the .exe it won't work. But it could be that they changed something. Last time i checked it was only mod code (ui).
Posted on 11 October, 2013 - 20:31
The code is in ui_mp_x86.dll? I could edit that with hex editor :D I'm not sure what I'm doing but atleast I'm trying
Posted on 11 October, 2013 - 20:43
Hm ... although, what masterserver is TCE using? O-o
Posted on 11 October, 2013 - 21:00
I think it uses the same master server than original ET. Console says "Resolving etmaster.idsoftware.com"
