Splash Damage in 2012 - A Message From Paul Wedgwood

We've enjoyed a fantastic first 10 years at Splash Damage and we're looking forward to an even more exciting future. A huge part of this is due to you - our fans - so in this update, I'd like to give you a quick glimpse of what you can expect from us this year.

First off, I want to thank all of you for your support throughout the years. Some of you have been with us right from the days of the Q3F mod team, then Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory, Enemy Territory: QUAKE Wars, and Brink. You've not only played our games, but also created countless maps and modifications, organized tournaments and leagues, and started fan sites in very-nearly every corner of the globe. We appreciate your interest and support more than we can say, along with your comments, feedback and, yes, complaints too. We look forward to sharing this next chapter in Splash Damage's history with you.

2012 is going to be a very special year for Splash Damage. In fact, it's going to be the most significant year in our history. In 2001 we went from a mod team to a professional developer. In the 10 years that followed, we became an AAA multi-platform developer, shipped three big multiplayer titles, worked on licensed properties and even created an original new universe. We've learned a lot from each of our games, and especially learned from the mistakes that we've made too.

As Gamers, we've also seen enormous changes in the past decade. We can now play multiplayer games online no matter what the platform is. Thanks to the wonders of digital distribution, we can buy games directly from their developers, and play them immediately. Mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets are more widespread than ever before, and these let us play wherever we are. More recently, the rise of good free-to-play games has allowed players to get their feet wet without demanding a big investment upfront. And, awesomely, despite an entire decade's worth of premature obituaries, the PC as a gaming platform is looking healthier than ever. All of this is transforming the ways games are made, sold, and played.

Which brings us back to 2012 being a special year for Splash Damage. We've got several significant announcements to make in the coming weeks and months. We've hired some amazing new talent, strengthening our team in key areas. We'll be revealing new titles - both on platforms we've previously visited (including the PC and the world's leading consoles), as well as exploring spaces completely new to us. Finally, we've got some special things planned to take full advantage of the changes our industry is experiencing. This is a hugely exciting time for everyone here at the studio and we can't wait to tell you about all the cool things we've got in store for you this year.

New titles... plural? Exciting indeed :D Hopefully still focusing on true FPS not this role-playing FPS type thing that seems to be going around at the moment...

Awesome, the gap between ETQW release and learning about Brink was 2 years, glad we don't have to wait quite as long to learn about what's coming up next from SD \o/

ETQW LIVE c'mon just do it :stroggbanana::tongue:
Posted on 24 January, 2012 - 12:30
Affirmation is always nice. Now I wish I could be a part of all that more than ever. @Pytox, let's have W:ETLIVE first and then use the momentum to boost that vibrant community into ETQWlive.
New titles... plural? Exciting indeed :D
Also a bit scary. Though, it's not unwise for an independent developer to have a small indie game project as these can prove to be sudden hits at a relative low cost. I really hope that's how it will work out for Futuremark with their Unstoppable Gorg.

Great stuff, i hope your next decade to be full with success and great achievements, and to here some news about MP for Doom, a Brink sequel/new IP and some iPhone/Android games :D Also i have two questions:" What is Chris doing under that table?" :D and If the pixel in the back of the photo with white shirt is you, then, you are getting thin Locki, what's happening? Stress, gym or lack of beer and xbox controller? :D
Posted on 24 January, 2012 - 14:15
Well this has piqued my interest. An Android/iOS title could be cool (though not if it controls like this.) Personally, I would love ET style multiplayer for Doom 4, so announce that. :D Anyway, best of luck with your endeavours. tokamak, looking forward to that Futuremark space-based shooter they trailed last year. Such a shame that Shattered Horizon couldn't maintain a player base.

Android and iPhone/iPad exclusives :D

Sounds good, Paul, but until you guys implement proper LAN support for Brink, your word has no value for us.
Posted on 24 January, 2012 - 15:59
Great news!!:penguin: Please, if u advertise single player like u did before releasing BRINK, u better make real single player, not with bots. Good luck!:penguin:

Ah, ET2... Dreaming is not prohibited (yet - see ACTA) :D

Congrats on the 10 years, good luck with the next 10 :) Now get us a solid game instead of the smacktalk
Posted on 24 January, 2012 - 20:03
Congrats with the 10 years, looking forward to see what you will announce next - within weeks, not months yes? :) Unexplored new spaces hmm - do I smell some HTML5 version of TapirWars (or similar) on the horizon? :infiltrator:

penguins need nerf Looking forward to announcements, expecting mobile.
Posted on 25 January, 2012 - 01:58
I'll see it when it gets here. I have to say that since tasting the fruits of the Bethesda partnership, I'm not as easily excited by the prospect of a new Splash Damage announcement.
Posted on 25 January, 2012 - 06:50
Ye! We want ETQW2!!!

Quote: "...the PC as a gaming platform is looking healthier than ever." Pinocchio your nose is growing! In a couple of weeks Splash Damage will announce a new multiplayer titel. After this announcement it will still take at least 2-3 years until it is finished. And than it also got a huge chance to fail like Brink. If the really release one game this year, it might be Tapir Wars for tablet PCs. Personally I would appreciate it. :D
Posted on 25 January, 2012 - 11:49
is this the announcement about the announcements which will talk about more announcements which dont actually announce anthing. ffs just tell us. we can handle it unless its brink2. hope its ET 3 back to ww2
Posted on 25 January, 2012 - 12:08
We've learned a lot from each of our games, and especially learned from the mistakes that we've made too.
Looking at WOLF:ET > ET:QW > BRINK.
Posted on 25 January, 2012 - 12:08
Well, see it this way, they didn't make any mistakes with W:ET and ETQW so there was nothing to learn.
Posted on 25 January, 2012 - 12:17
There were enough full hold grinds in ETQW to show that everything wasn't perfect, regardless of how small or large the issue.
Posted on 25 January, 2012 - 12:30
Paul, it all sounds so sweet. "several significant announcements to make in the coming weeks and months" and "revealing new titles" I wonder what it can be. I hope it will be a multiplayer online shooter for PC. I am very glad that you managed to establish yourself and your team as well as stay on as a game developer, given that it must be an incredible complex and competitive market. Set me up on your list if you need closed beta testers. Loffy

Hello Kitty. Island. Adventure.
Posted on 25 January, 2012 - 13:06
Instant success: There should be a gym somewhere, and a British Shorthair somewhere, in the game worlds.
Posted on 25 January, 2012 - 13:30
At least make it "ET3: Hello Kitty Island Adventure"?
Posted on 25 January, 2012 - 13:58
"...the PC as a gaming platform is looking healthier than ever." Pinocchio your nose is growing!
It might not be healthier than ever, but games like SC2 and LoL brought it back to being relevant. And more importantly for objective classed based gameplay, Dice have already done a good job of dumbing it down for the mass audience, so if SD chooses to ride the objective gameplay wave, the new fish have something to transition to without SD needing to destroy their ET model like they did with Brink. /at least in theory ;)
Posted on 25 January, 2012 - 14:00
HKIA? doesn't ring a bell.
There were enough full hold grinds in ETQW to show that everything wasn't perfect, regardless of how small or large the issue.
But that's not exactly a fault they've learned from.
Posted on 25 January, 2012 - 14:14
Guess I read your statement wrong, sounded like you were saying there was nothing wrong with W:ET or ETQW.
Posted on 25 January, 2012 - 14:34
Set me up on your list if you need closed beta testers.
Second that!
Posted on 25 January, 2012 - 14:38
Yeah sounds promising now remember to listen to the end users :) Take the movements, weapons and classes from ET ad all the possibilities we have now to edit stuff put it on a new gamengine with handsom gfx and maybe a few extras WW2 theme or atleast a wartheme with humans no aliencrap make it usefull for both the scrim and pubscenes forget all about a SP make it MP only. Linux serverbinaries and il preorder it :)
Posted on 25 January, 2012 - 14:53
Already people are whining... Just make a nice fun game. Wonder if they doing something for a Nintendo system seeing as they finally getting to grips with online.
Posted on 25 January, 2012 - 15:10
I hope you stuck the the gameplay as it is in Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory. Great community, talkactive, and ofcourse the not-so-difficult and easy HUD :) Would be awesome if such a game will be released in the upcoming couple of years. Thanks!
Posted on 25 January, 2012 - 20:11
Nice to hear from you again Paul, it's been quite some time :) Looking forward to hearing SD's announcements in 2012. More cautious this time, but definitely optimistic :) Best of luck with all your plans.

Wolfenstein:ET Modern Warfare
Posted on 25 January, 2012 - 21:18
You can start this new year by giving everybody who bought BRINK a refund. It's an overhyped, bland and generic shooter that plays more like a budget title that you see churned out by some South Korean studio every couple of months than a big budget, triple A title. It's one of the worst titles of 2011. Shame on you!
Posted on 26 January, 2012 - 00:11
I don't want a refund, but I want their next game to be good and not get nominated by multiple sites as worst game of the year or most dissapointing game.
Posted on 26 January, 2012 - 00:31
Lulzie, people are asking for an ET3 that feels and plays the same with updated graphics... Please god no, something new and innovative... Just lets make sure its not slow, clunky and plays like **** like the last one. Aliens are fine too, it is all about the game play... and even if I cared about the backdrop as much as the playability, the millionth WW2 setting FPS doesn't sound appealing. Honestly wouldn't even mind if ya'll did a RTS / MOBA if it played well and required in-depth strategies and there was a lot of room for intense micro/macro, though I'd be sad that one of the few FPS companies that I still believed in dropped the genre. Whatever it is I told myself I wouldn't get hyped up for a SD game again after Brink but after not finding anything new that I could hold onto since then you've managed to get me hyped up. I'm hoping I don't have to wait to long, but at the same time try not to let you're fanbase / publisher dictate when the game is supposed to be ready. Please just get out a fun and finished product that has been tested extensively on all platforms it is on this time. :D

SD announce "Beat Loffy Up: The Game"
Posted on 26 January, 2012 - 20:41
well, things have changed a lot over the last years ... every new game on PC nowadays has become console like and is far away from what PC gaming was once, years ago.... You know it and you know where you come from :) ..that's why all the people like your games...still... U rock! :D I'd guess if U want to reach the "core" again it's time to think about a new business model some kind similar to what Avalanche Studios did with "The Hunter" .... yes/ no we don't want that...but... It's sad to say (speaking as a hardcore fan) that seems to be the only way to reach the core again and keep games/gameplay back to the roots as it was once :stroggbanana: imo sorry for writing mistakes... I am german that should explain everything ... and we do not walk goose step anymore ...no! :D:tongue:
Posted on 26 January, 2012 - 22:01
Will be interesting to see ... As long as: It is developed for PC. Has Map- and MOD Kit Has Linux DS Anyone can run a server. DS open for customization
Posted on 28 January, 2012 - 03:10
Yes ! Hoping SD's announcements for 2012 will have a few pleasant suprises for everyone

ET revisited lol
Posted on 30 January, 2012 - 10:03
How about a ETQW game on Stroggos?
Posted on 31 January, 2012 - 01:23
:orbital: We want the next generation ETQW :armadillo :
Posted on 31 January, 2012 - 02:54
ETQW : strogg's planet !!! We want it !!! Still, I would pay for new officials ETQW maps and a game update, I know many others would also.
Posted on 31 January, 2012 - 19:47
Have been playing Rage: The Campaign (Mac) this week, and my gosh it looks fantastic. Would love to see ETQW2 being dressed up with the new ID5 engine. With some new movement/gameplay stuff from Brink + some total new vehicles + a smoother way to provide users custom content/maps/mods.
Posted on 8 February, 2012 - 16:26
Rage has some good sides, but the gunplay in it felt a bit clunky. Still, smoother movement than Brink - barring the invisible wall - so that's a plus.
Posted on 8 February, 2012 - 19:40
How about a ETQW game on Stroggos?
ETQW: Take It To Stroggos :D Oh the way I've been fantasising about TITS all these years, I've some really good ideas.
Posted on 8 February, 2012 - 19:44
The low resolution textures took me right out of the moment when playing Rage. Some look better now with the upsampling patch, but others are just beyond help. It's a real shame too because the artwork is obviously fantastic (particularly in the hubs). Don't know how suitable idtech 5 is for other games. The world felt a little too static and indestructible. The gunplay was reasonably solid for me though (especially considering the console focus).
Posted on 8 February, 2012 - 21:46

I believe there are some websites which can help you with fantasies about TITS. :D
Posted on 8 February, 2012 - 22:44
I'd rather keep it on Earth, more variety of locations, or have mixture with campaigns on Earth and others on Stroggos not sure would like all Strogg themed maps though.
Posted on 9 February, 2012 - 08:21
ETQW needs to be about the Strogg figting a rearguard battle while they're making their retreat to Stroggos. Earth is indeed not finished yet. The Strogg are retreating after Volcano's EMP but need to sabotage any pursuit. So there's an attempt at breaking open the Silfra in Iceland turning the Island into a super volcano. Then there's that Gigantic Strogg ship that crash landed in an Mayan pyramid which the GDF wants to use to board the orbiting Motherhip (and take control of the space slipgate) The Koreans have already been busy reverse engineering the Descrator tank and the first Grav tank prototype needs to be escorted. The Strogg understand the gravity (no pun intended) of the situation and need to destroy this thing before they're taking their departure to Stroggos. The few remaining continents on Earth > Transition from Earth's Orbit to Stroggos Orbit > Stroggos missions that overlap with Bitterman's.

Excuse my ignorance, but hasn't the fact it's Unreal engine at least removed the possibility of any ETQW based game being in development currently?
Posted on 10 February, 2012 - 16:25
You mean IP wise? Yeah good point.
Posted on 10 February, 2012 - 17:44

Yes. :) However only teams under zenimax can use idtech, so on that fireteam website it makes sense to say "such as UE and Unity" as examples. They could possibly be using idtech5 with this fireteam system. They might be using UE or Unity for their iphone/ipad/android games, and using idtech5 for their pc games.

The production tester position only mentions unreal stuff, so I think it's safe to say the current project is using U3 engine.
Posted on 11 February, 2012 - 12:14
Possibly, but they wouldnt be able to advertise for idtech5 either :)
Posted on 11 February, 2012 - 12:31
Well they're going the wrong way about it by asking for experience with Unreal then :P
Posted on 11 February, 2012 - 13:41
Explains all the bugs and errors in Brink! :) Actually its not the first time they have advertised for that position asking for UE experience, which when I read it at the time I thought was pretty interesting. The community questions could mean absolutely nothing as well, but the vibe im getting is its an id remake - rtcw / et / etqw Guess we will have to wait for e3 or something!
Posted on 11 February, 2012 - 14:03
We've got several significant announcements to make in the coming weeks and months.
Any idea when we are going to get information about the possible new games? So far nothing significant has been announced which actually got my interest.
