Currently Hurling Controllers / Mice At... Last Call of 2008 Edition

Welcome to 2008's final edition of Currently Hurling, but not to worry, we'll be back in full force next year. While Prince of Persia was the major release of last week, most of us still way too swamped with other things and Fallout to even contemplate playing it. Luckily there won't be any major releases for the next few weeks, giving us some much needed breathing room to work our way through everything.

In this installment, Richard likes Dead Space, Paul sort of likes Mirror's Edge, and Jamie's foot doesn't like Rock Band. Also, please give a warm welcome to freshly excavated Neil 'exedore' Alphonso, our new king of level designers. He's really good at making maps.

Splash Damage Christmas Tapirthon 2008

If you're a regular reader of the site, you'll undoubtedly have noticed that we're big fans of the tapir around here. None of us can say precisely whether it is more their snortling grace, their mild and modest evolutionary longevity or the splendid spots and stripes of their young that so fascinates us, but we're happy and proud to count ourselves among the waving, hooting ranks of TapirFans the world over.

Unfortunately, all three of the tapir species are endangered and faced with extinction. To help preserve them, one of the things we did earlier in the year (on World Tapir Day, no less) was to donate a healthy amount of cash to the Baird's Tapir Project, the longest on-going tapir conservation effort in the world.

When it came to doing this year's Christmas cards, we thought we'd do one better and use them to spread the word about tapirs and raise some more money for our endangered perissodactyl friends.

Things You Were Too Afraid to Ask: Richard 'Rahdo' Ham

RahdoJust in time for his grand unveiling, our latest staff interview features none other than the Caesar of Creative, the Dean of Design, the Wizard of Words, Splash Damage's freshly crowned Creative Director Richard 'Rahdo' Ham. As chronicled in the press release, Richard just finished work on Fable II as lead designer and previously contributed to all manner of games, including the rather popular Syphon Filter series, The Sims, and The Movies. But most of all, he ups our Impressive Beard Count by 1.

So what occasioned this personified lexicon of knowledge to set up shop right here in our offices? Luckily, that's just one of the nuggets of information revealed in the full interview, which also covers what he actually does around here, his extensive industry experience, as well as his gaming background and habits.

We Abduct Fable II Lead Designer, Make Him Creative Director

With Splash Damage changing from a purely PC developer to a multi-platform studio, we needed somebody with a vast amount of console experience to spearhead our efforts. Our search is now over, and we're extremely pleased to announce that Fable II lead designer Richard 'Rahdo' Ham has joined Splash Damage as Creative Director. In his new position, Richard will drive the vision and lead the design team behind our current project.

Beyond Fable II, Richard brings a staggering 15 years of industry experience to Splash Damage. He was the creative lead on the hugely popular Syphon Filter series for the original PlayStation, and worked on a multitude of other games across all major platforms, including the first successful adaption of The Sims for consoles, and the PC titles Fable: The Lost Chapters and The Movies. We're so excited to have Richard here with us that we dedicated an entire press release to him - roll your eyeballs up and down it to find out all about the man and our official reasons for bringing him aboard (for all the others, check out his staff interview).

Currently Hurling Controllers / Mice At... Zombies in Space

The deadly onslaught of new releases is finally winding down a bit, though our backlog of games we still need to chomp through is still about three nautical miles long. There's no consistent gaming theme for this installment (our daily Left 4 Dead multiplayer matches notwithstanding), as people are slowly catching up on on all the games they missed in the past few months.

This week, Dann 'SRS-Kap' Yeung, freshly beamed over from Lionhead Studios, makes his first appearance on the blog, while Media Director Richard 'Fluffy_gIMp' Jolly is the first to get all Fallout 3 achievements and Splash Damage's Captain Paul 'Locki' Wedgwood gives us a quickie summary of the games he's played this year.
